An attractive flexible fast system

Hamilton Beach 49981 Stainless steel The Scoop Single-Cup Coffee Maker
Hamilton Beach 49981 Stainless steel The Scoop Single-Cup Coffee Maker

Pros: Fast brew cycle, even on the Bold setting Makes 8 oz or 16 oz - or any size in between Easy to fill, use & clean Not tied to expensive k-cups Double filtered so no sediment gets through

Cons: Very Minor; I would have preferred a second hook on the outside for the 2nd scoop so it will dry faster instead of putting it back wet

Overall Review: So far my wife loves this coffee maker. It's bigger than her old B&D model, but so much nicer. It did take a few cups to figure out the right amount of coffee; we use Folgers or Max. House regular grind & prefer ours strong. Following the set-up directions the machine 'drank' 4 oz of water - I put in a full mug & only got half of it back, so run at least 3 cups to prep it. Finally, be sure all users are aware of the second filter - it will fill with sediment & overflow, but the system is well designed & cleans easily.

DOA - Beware if this shows 'in-stock'

Gateway Desktop PC FX6860-UR20P Intel Core i7 2600 (3.40GHz) 8GB DDR3 1.5TB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 Windows 7 Home Premium

Pros: Nice specs for a decent price - IF IT WORKED!

Cons: System was DOA. Does not come with any removable hard drive trays for the two bays Poor packaging of the system and components NO support

Overall Review: I set it up & pushed the power button...the fans spin and there's a couple of beeps, then it stops...then repeats...and repeats. It tries to boot, over & over, and would probably go on forever. I had to pull the power plug from the wall to get it to stop, as the power button does nothing at this point. Since it only runs for about 4 seconds it never gets to a boot screen. I did the basic troubleshooting; inspect, re-seat, check connections, jumpers...to no avail. No info is provided with the system, Gateway has nothing on their site, and the "phone support" number does not offer support - only a return for repairs. If you call the Gateway number listed on this page they transfer you to a fee-based company because the unit is out of warranty to them. It's possible the system was damaged in shipping - the packaging was skimpy. It was intact on the outside, but the computer was wrapped in plastic and tied to a supporting piece of cardboard. The other components were loose in the box. Nothing was secured and there no padding at all to absorb shock. If you see this system as in-stock, and you're brave enough to order, watch for SNID: 21601804992. As for me, I'm going to shop for something else as I would not trust the repairs or another refurb. In the past two years I've had two others companies send me used or broken items passed off as new. Not claiming that's what they did, just that I have lost all trust.
