Reader and ports work well but LED display not so much10/21/2016 3:46:03 PM

Pros: This device has read every form factor memory card I have thrown at it. The USB ports also work, although they charge devices at a low rate. I do not use the fan controller, so I can't comment on that.

Cons: The LED display has degraded to a point where it is almost impossible to read. The number value for each digit is displayed using two columns made up of two vertical "segments" each, and three rows of 1 horizontal segment each. Within a month two segments stopped working, so it was difficult to differentiate a 3 from a 5 for example. Recently even more have gone dark, so that it is now impossible to read.

Overall Review: I would recommend this to anyone that didn't care at all about the LED display that shows the current voltage and amperage draw of a device connected to the ports, but then again, why would anyone that didn't care about these details buy this? I would absolutely NOT recommend this to somebody that was interested in using the LED display to monitor the current draw characteristics of a device plugged into one of the USB ports. I am very disappointed.

Pros: When it works, it works well. The firmware interface is great. The number of configurable options is great.

Cons: It stops working frequently. I have had this router since the end of November 2012. Since then, it has decided that there is no way on earth it can connect to the internet (cable modem) at least once every two weeks. It doesn't seem to matter how many times the cable modem is unplugged, router is unplugged, router and modem are unplugged and/or reset, and in what order. Once this router decides it can't connect to the cable modem, it/you are out of luck. Most of the time I can get it to connect after an hour or two of trying, but today I could not get it to work at all. I ended up unplugging the ASUS RT-N56U and putting my ancient Linksys back in service. The transmission speed is dismal, and the cable modem xmit LED is blinking orange, but at least it works.

Overall Review: Cable modem is a Motorola SURFBoard SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. My cable service provider is Charter. The router's firmware is the latest as of the end of the year 2012; v3.xxxx The help links from the router's setup utility point to url's ON THE INTERNET!! You won't get to those endpoints if you click on the links from within the router's setup up UI. If you don't know where the CD with the documentation is, then you are really in trouble. I've been an ASUS customer/advocate for a long time. I have 12 computers in my small network. All home-built except for two laptops, and one of those is an ASUS. Seven of the ten non-laptops have ASUS motherboards. I am so disappointed with my experience with this router that I'd think carefully about purchasing or recommending another ASUS product. It has been *that* painful. I will return it as soon as I can given my schedule, and get a different brand.
