ThinkPad Laptop T Series Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 1GB Memory 100GB HDD Intel GMA X3100 14.1" Windows XP Professional T61(765901U)
ThinkPad Laptop T Series Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 1GB Memory 100GB HDD Intel GMA X3100 14.1" Windows XP Professional T61(765901U)

Pros: I have had this for one week now and it is great. This is my third ThinkPad. I have heard several reports of poor build quality since Lenovo bought out IBM's hardware line, but mine is flawless. It really puts my Compaq to shame. The trackpoint is much better than a touchpad. Noticeably faster harddrive than the 5400 RPM model in my other laptop.

Cons: The pictures on this site are of a different model! They are actually of a 15.4' T61. The one being sold does not have the flash card reader slot. It does have a Cardbus slot and an ExpressCard 54 slot. They use the same opening/door and are stacked one above the other, so it will not be possible to use 2 cards that both have oversized external portions, such as eSata cards. The door swings inward, so if only one card is installed the other slot will be open to dust. The lack of a DVD burner is a bit of a pain when it comes to making backups or copies of the recovery software. The screen has a poor vertical viewing angle.

Overall Review: The memory in mine is a single 1GB stick, which is great for upgrading. Mine is from Samsung. All 3 antenna wires are there if you want to upgrade to an 802.11N wireless card. If you are not a gamer, the X3100 is a better choice than the Nvidia card due to less heat and better battery life. Recovery partitions are standard with most laptops these days. If you don't want it, get an external DVD burner or several CDs and make a copy, then reformat it. Run System Update and update the drivers and software right away, but search the Lenovo site for the bootable CD method of updating the BIOS. This is much safer. I'll be installing 64 bit Kubuntu 7.10 this weekend, and by all reports everything is fully supported after a couple extra drivers are added. Some people consider the Thinkvantage software to be bloatware, but I find almost all of it useful. If this configuration fits your needs, it is an excellent value.

Useless junk

Rosewill RCAB-11024 - 3-Foot USB 2.0 A Male to (5-Pin) Mini B Male Cable - Black with Gold Plated Connectors
Rosewill RCAB-11024 - 3-Foot USB 2.0 A Male to (5-Pin) Mini B Male Cable - Black with Gold Plated Connectors

Pros: None

Cons: They don't work! I tried 2 of these cables on 2 different 2.5" external hard drives and neither one worked--drives received power but the computer did not "see" the drives. A third cable of another brand, which I already had, works fine. Other types of cables from the same manufacturer also worked fine. Very disappointed with Newegg, as I believe they know they are selling defective cables. Return shipping is more than the cost of the cables, so I can't even return them--as Newegg was probably counting on when they sold them.

Overall Review: Will stick with other sites for inexpensive item like this in the future, since return shipping is free.

XPG SX300 128GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ASX300S3-128GM-C

Pros: I do not (yet) own this drive. I am writing this to try to balance out the review below where the reviewer takes off one egg because the drive did not reach its rated speed. He clearly states that it was used in a laptop that only has a SATA II bus. The theoretical maximum throughput for SATA II is 300MB/sec. He was getting 280MB/sec. Any time you get 93% of the theoretical maximum in a real world computer setting, you should be thrilled. To reach the rated maximum speed of this SATA III drive, you need a device with a SATA III bus and you need to be transferring a very large file. I expect to be purchasing either this drive or the 120GB Mushkin in a couple of weeks. If I do, I'll update my review after I receive it.

Cons: None

Good purchase

Pros: Quiet, fast, and large capacity. Works great in my ThinkPad T61 and runs noticeably cooler than the 100GB 7200RPM Hitachi 7K100 that it came with.

Cons: None

COOLMAX HD-250T-eSATA Aluminum 2.5" Gray SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure
COOLMAX HD-250T-eSATA Aluminum 2.5" Gray SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Functionally, this drive is exactly the same as the black, copper/gold, and leather covered models. It is very compact. I have only used it wit USB, but it has no problem running my 100GB 7200RPM Hitachi 7K100 for several hours with only one USB connector plugged in. The case seems to dissipate heat well.

Cons: Cosmetically, it looks OK but nothing special. As I had suspected from the pictures, the strip with the logo does not seem to want to stay flat, but this is a minor issue for me.

Very nice

Pros: Noticeably faster than the 5400RPM drive in my last laptop. Runs cool and quiet with no clicking noise, but I have not yet had it in a completely silent room.

Cons: Possibly lower battery life than a 5400RPM model, but I have no way to measure that.

Overall Review: This is the drive that my ThinkPad T61 model 765901U shipped with.
