IOGear GUS402 Review

IOGEAR GUS402 2 x 4 USB 2.0 Peripheral Sharing Switch
IOGEAR GUS402 2 x 4 USB 2.0 Peripheral Sharing Switch

Pros: I have a Logitech G710+ keyboard (2 USB cables) and a G100 Mouse that I use with my Desktop, and I wanted to be able to use them on my work laptop. I have read that the existing KVM switches do not work with these USB devices because of the 2-way communications, and that these UBS devices need to have a USB switch that would support the peripheral sharing. This is where the GUS402 shines. I was able to take advantage of my monitor (AOC G2770PQU) and use a spare HDMI cable to connect to the laptop, and just manually switch my monitor between the desktop, using the DVI port, and the laptop, using the HDMI port. So now I just need to plug in two wires (HDMI and USB) into my laptop and I can switch easily between my laptop and desktop, using the same Keyboard, Monitor and Mouse. It is working as expected, and is hundreds of dollars less than the currently available KVM options, like the IOGear 4 Port DVI KVMP Switch (GCS1104) ,

Cons: The switch is not a high quality user experience, but it works fine for my low volume usage.

Overall Review: The GUS402 has 2, 4 foot USB 2.0 cables, 2, 6 foot USB 2.0 cables and a 6 foot cable for the switch. Not sure why the USB cables are different lengths, but they did not interfere with my setup. Another minor point is the micro USB port for power should be in the back, not the front, for better cable management. For my setup the extra power was NOT needed. The real issue is that the switch sticks, so I pried the case a bit to give the button more room and it seems to be working fine now. I have read that others have cut the cord and replaced the switch with a mechanical switch. I use the switch a few times a day, so low volume equals low annoyance, but if you plan to have higher usage, replacement of the switch would seem like a viable option. The switch works, but is just not a high quality experience and seems to be the only weakness that kept it from getting a perfect score. I hope the manufacture will work to improve the switch. Given the niche market this devise holds, I would pay more if the manufacture would add a better switch, maybe with a indicator light on the switch also. This minor change would provide a noticeable improvement.
