Amazing

Acer Aspire 15.4" AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 3GB Memory Windows Vista Home Premium AS5520-5142

Pros: An extremely high quality product, as I have come to expect from Acer. Everything runs fast and smooth right out of the box. Has the look and feel of a laptop from a much higher price bracket. I don't usually care for integrated speakers, but the one with this laptop is above satisfactory. I can actually bear to listen to music and movies on it when I don't have a set of speakers or headphones handy. It has lots of inputs, a memory card reader for my digital camera (SD) card, enough USBs for a separate keyboard and mouse, WAN works great, and the webcam and mic work really well too. Lastly the display is vibrent and clear (despite the slightly lower resolution). Very easy to read, and great for photos and movies.

Cons: It only comes with trial Microsoft Office so I had to buy a copy. That is to be expected with almost all new laptops and desktops.

Overall Review: I won't really use this laptop for gaming (thats what desktop PCs are for), so I can't really say how well it runs games. It runs simple games like cards and popcap games (peggle, zuma, stuff like that). There is a lot of great hardware in this for the price range it falls into. It does not however, have a discrete graphics card. Any graphics memory is shared with your system memory. For what I have used it for so far, I can't say enough good stuff. This is the best price I have seen on a full feature laptop. Acer has delivered many times over in previously purchased laptops and desktops, and this time was no different.

Not Good

Antec NEW SOLUTION SERIES VSK-4000 Black SGCC steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Antec NEW SOLUTION SERIES VSK-4000 Black SGCC steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: At least it was cheap.

Cons: I cannot believe this case bears the manufacturer Antec. This is nothing like any Antec I have ever worked with before. First off, I had to remove the fan to fit my mid-ATX motherboard. Even then it scraped against the hard drive cage on the way in. Also, the standoffs get stripped easily, which is wonderful when you are on the 5th one and you have to undo them all. Second once I finally wiggled the motherboard into place, the standoffs weren't tall enough for the PCIe cards to fit properly. If I put the PCIe screws in, the cards didn't even sit in the socket enough to make contact. This is totally crippling and I will not be able to use this case in this build. I tried two different cards to make sure I wasn't losing my mind (1x and 16x). Third, the material is downright flimsy, which is acceptable for a cheap case only if it doesn't compromise how the screws line up. Lastly, getting the front bay covers off was like pulling teeth. Also acceptable for a cheap case.

Overall Review: I am not sure why this is not mentioned in more reviews. Maybe I got a defective case, but I looked around for obvious defects and couldn't find anything that would cause the PCIe cards to not line up. If this PC was for me I would spend more because a decent case could last a lifetime. My friend asked me to cut corners and I thought how could you possibly go wrong with Antec...

The Price Was Right

Telex Electro-Voice EV Sonic XS 4.1 5-Piece Powered Hardcore Multimedia Speaker System-A Grade Refurbished
Telex Electro-Voice EV Sonic XS 4.1 5-Piece Powered Hardcore Multimedia Speaker System-A Grade Refurbished

Pros: They worked, maybe I'm just lucky. They sound better than ANY computer audio system I've heard short of the $250+ price range. Even at that price range these things might still take the cake for volume. At half volume these things will make your ears bleed, I'm sure they could easily fill up a living room with sound. A computer room is almost too small for these speakers to stretch their legs. They are relatively clear with very little hiss as other reviewers have stated. I can't hear the hiss over my computer and when my computer is off I still have to listen for it to notice.

Cons: If I had to pick a con, which is silly for this price, I would have to say it is a bit of a trick between the various dials to get the sound balanced the way I like it. The subwoofer has its own volume dial which to say the least is on the floor, while the mail speaker has a fade dial, on my desk. Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to mount the speakers to the wall.

Overall Review: These speakers really harken back to a set my college roommate had that could quite literally shake the building (Z5500). The sheer volume and potential bass of that set was unbelievable, these are fairly similarly powerful without some of the other frills like the fancy remote. Plus, I believe the Z5500 system is pretty hard to come by, and the newer model (Z906) is a little lackluster.

Same old solid GSkill

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

Pros: Writing a review for GSkill memory is akin to writing a review for a sheet of paper. I have put hundreds of sticks of GSkill memory in computers and never seen a failure, and this kit continues the trend. I almost always buy GSkill because I love it when a build boots on the first try, that always puts a smile on a nervous customer's face.

Cons: No cons.

Overall Review: For those who are new builders, if the timings aren't right on the first try hop into the BIOS and set them.

Great Little Cooler

XIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition CPU Cooler with Stealth Aerospace Industry Thermal conductive ceramic coating LGA1150 Haswell Compatible
XIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition CPU Cooler with Stealth Aerospace Industry Thermal conductive ceramic coating LGA1150 Haswell Compatible

Pros: This HSF actually has a fairly small footprint compared to some of the coolers I've installed over the years. The installation is easy, but I pity the fool that tries to figure out the manual. Mine only came with one fan, but you can buy the exact fan included for a second for a push-pull setup. Even with two fans this HSF would not block my memory slots (see mobo below). This HSF keeps thing nice an cool even under heavy loads. There may be better HSFs out there but this one is really a great value, comparable to more expensive alternatives.

Cons: The ceramic coating is just a frill, but it looks cool and the cooler is at a desirable price point.

Overall Review: Pro tips: * Install/mount the heatsink before attaching the fan(s). For the LGA 2011 bracket the fan(s) block the screws. * Decide whether you are using the back-plate before you install the motherboard in the case. * Buy a decent (silver) thermal compound * Use a plastic sandwich bag or something similar over your finger as you apply the thermal compound directly to the CPU. This way you don't have silver on your fingers when you touch the black heatsink (it will show up). Great As Always

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10Q-32GBZL

Pros: I've been building computers for a while and over the years it seems that GSkill has really converged on a winning formula. As with many builds in the past the ram work flawlessly on the first boot. I needed to hop into the BIOS and set the frequency and timings to obtain stock figures, but there were no problems posting or booting at those numbers.

Cons: NONE. I didn't even get cut on the heatsinks, my how things have changed over the years.

Overall Review: I am not much for overclocking but chances are I will try to squeeze a little more out of these sticks.
