Unable to use my Asus ROG Strix 1080ti with this board 9/15/2020 6:33:52 PM

Pros: Great feature set, including USB 3.2
Looks cool

Cons: Doesn't work with my GPU. An Asus ROG Strix 1080ti does not work in an Asus board. Let that sink in.

Overall Review: Imagine my surprise when this board, which is not cheap, does not work with my relatively recent GPU. I tried with the board laying flat, I tried with it mounted in the case, I tried fiddling around with the position, I tried the other 16x PCIe slot. Nothing. Nada. Just an "02" q-code error and the VGA trouble LED lit.

I know it's not a dead board, because it works just fine with a 1660s (also Asus) I have lying around, going straight to BIOS as it should. The BIOS reports the CPU and RAM just fine, so as far as I can tell the only issue is it can't (or won't) see my 1080ti.

And yes, the 1080ti works; I'm using it in my old rig (plugged into a Gigabyte z270p-d3) to power the display upon which I'm writing this very review. After I'm done complaining I'll go back to Skyrim, on my very much working 1080ti.

Such a bizarre problem. I can't tell if it's a physical issue with the PCIe slot or some arcane compatibility issue. Either way, very disappointing.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Sean T.,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having compatibility issues with this board. That certainly sounds like a frustrating issue. If you haven't already, I suggest updating your 1080ti to the most recent drivers from the working Z270 system, as well as updating the BIOS and chipset for the B550-E board from the link below. At that point, please try booting the B550-E system with the 1080ti installed. If that does not resolve the issue, please reach out to me at cl-lane@asus.com and include case #N200956484 in your email for reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

Best regards,
Lane

asus ROG strix B550 E 9/12/2020 7:41:49 AM

Pros: Beautiful looking board would be great I'm sure if it worked

Cons: Dead on arrival - I am shocked after 15 years of building PC's first ever problem with ASUS components build quality not as good as the last board I had ROG X370F

Overall Review: perhaps...

Great choice! This motherboard has lots of features and is among the top rated for this class! 8/29/2020 5:55:01 PM

Pros: Dual, addressable and non-addressable RGB headers. You'll find them at the top and bottom of the board.

Built-in wi-fi with external antenna

Digital readout module for troubleshooting, AND additional boot-up LEDs, which show you exactly what stage the board is at/what is wrong, if the system won't boot all the way up! This is a godsend for troubleshooting! You'll love these features!

Supports two m.2 drives, 6 SATA ports, slots for 3 graphics cards, front panel headers for USB2 and USB3.

Flash bios button on the rear panel. This is a GREAT FEATURE if you need to recover or flash your bios. No more "bricked" board if your bios crashes. You'll want this feature!

The I/O shield is built onto the rear panel, no more forgetting to install the I/o shield.

Cons: The CPU power connector(s) are located in the top, left corner of the board. This is a full-sized Motherboard (ATX), and so, depending on which case you install it in, it could be a bit tight, trying to plug the cpu power in. You might need some long-handled, needle nose pliers if space is tight.

This isn't really a con, however the board features two standard USB 2 headers for the front panel. Ordinarily, this is plenty, UNLESS... you're installing "toys" with RGB lighting, in which case they will hog up these ports. You may get around this by purchasing an internal USB splitter, or..... just leave the usb 2.0 ports disconnected on your front panel.

Overall Review: When it comes to selecting a motherboard, there are LOTS of choices out there. It took me a good, two weeks, before I finally decided on this one. I watched many Youtube clips, read lots of reviews. At first I thought about going with an Intel board, but after all the reviews out there, it seems AMD Ryzen is all the rage, so.... I went with an AMD board.

While this board is rated for Gaming, I wanted a system I could use for video editing. Pretty much any gaming board will suffice. This board may actually be overkill for video editing, but I like the fact that it will support two m.2 SSD drives, and has expansion slots for additional graphics cards, as well as two PCIe slots. I can add additional gadgets to this system if I really wanted to.

While wired eithernet is the way to go, I saw that this board had built-in wi-fi, so I thought, "Why not have that??" It also has usb 3. header on the front, & header for thunderbolt, if I ever wanted to add that. On the rear, it has 4 standard usb 2.0 ports, 2 usb 3.0 ports, plus a "mini" usb 3 port you may connect your mobile device to. Pretty sweet!

This board has RGB lighting, but it's discrete, and not like Las Vegas. I like that. Even though the lighting is discrete, you may configure it with software, AND it can be sync'd with third party software as well, which is great. The board has RGB headers at the top AND the bottom of the board. (Two headers each, for standard and addressable, at top and bottom of board)

Installing the CPU on this board was VERY easy! I went with the Ryzen 9 3900X. WOW! (Yes, the 550 chipset DOES support it!). One thing to keep in mind though, if you go with this particular CPU; it doesn't have built-in graphics. So what this means, is although there are connections on the I/O shield on the back of this board for a video monitor, you will not get any video output from those ports if you go with the Ryzen 9 series cpu's. You'll need to install a graphics card. (For video editing, OF COURSE you'll put one in) I love this board!!!!

Looks nice, but has problems 8/15/2020 4:10:02 PM

Pros: -Appealing looks
-error code readout
-high frequency RAM support

Cons: -Bluetooth is completely dysfunctional

Overall Review: I want to recommend this board but for it to be advertising Bluetooth connectivity and to have somehow destroyed the windows Bluetooth interface upon usage is upsetting. I can't add new Bluetooth devices, remove old ones, or even get old ones to function. Even using a separate Bluetooth dongle does not work somehow even though the only ting I changed in my system is the mobo. After many hours of troubleshooting I have determined it cannot be anything other than the mobo.

Great Board! 7/21/2020 4:02:50 PM

Pros: Great board, packed with a lot of features. No over the top RGB lights, meaning that is very subtle and reserved, which in my opinion is great in a market flooded with RGB everywhere. No Bios issues and pretty optimized for the R7-3700x it is pared with on my system.

Cons: A little pricey when compared against it B-450 Bros/Sis and it's X-570 Cousins.
Few USB interfaces. Advertised in the box are almost 12 different USB interfaces, but most are dependent on your case or other hardware using the USB headers on the board.

Overall Review: Would recommend this "if" you are looking for a great B-550 board.

Ryzen 9 3900XT does not come even close to max boost on this board 7/18/2020 8:33:29 AM

Pros: Seemingly high build quality, full set of features
Nice RGB

Cons: Ryzen 9 3900XT does not even come close to max boost on this board. I'm running it with a Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler in an extremely well case ventilated with 4x Noctua high performance fans and a 1000W power supply, DDR4 3600, 2080Ti etc. The CPU hits a max boost of 4325Mhz, no matter what bios/windows/etc settings I try. My various benchmark scores are always a few hundred points below similarly spec'd systems.

Overall Review: High quality board with a solid feature set, but *really* disappointing performance.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Valued Customer,

I'm sorry to hear that you are not seeing the CPU performance you are expecting. That is absolutely not the kind of experience we want any of our customers to have. If you haven't already, please ensure you have downloaded and updated your BIOS and chipset driver from the link below. Do you have PBO or a custom overclock set in BIOS? I would recommend clearing CMOS and checking for max boost frequency after a reboot. If you have any general or technical questions, please email me at cl-lane@asus.com and include case #N200770324 for reference.

Avoid for now, Issues with the LAN adapter 7/16/2020 12:49:01 PM

Pros: It's a nice board, lots of Fan headers. heat sinks for M.2 drives.

Cons: Ethernet Lan is garbage right now

Overall Review: I'm getting 1/4 of my expected speed via Ethernet connection. Wifi connection is much better speed wise but when you make 2.5G or whatever apart of your marketing you should be really sure that it works properly. I have two choices and not sure which i want to do, 1 use Wifi or 2 RMA the board and get something different. I've emailed ASUS about the issue and I'll have to see what they say .
