Great Hardware/Bad Firmware 9/21/2020 9:13:21 AM

Pros: It is really fast like they say.

Cons: The software/firmware is a real let down.

Overall Review: I like this hardware (not so much the look) barbecue i was faster and streams had no hiccups 2 stars.
I cant get over this firmware. All of the AI features requires you to accept a terrible user policy that allow trendmicro to collect all visited URL's, emails. and all of the devices on the network. So at the cost of all your privacy you can turn on the AI features listed in the description. The actual things I would like to configure are not available for the LAN.

Great router! 9/12/2020 7:57:44 AM

Pros: Fast connection
Ease of use in set up
Ease of function to customize
No drop in connections
Guest network set up
Game Boost

Cons: It is Big

Overall Review: So, I like to do a lot of research online and reading reviews both on the site and from cnet, wired and other tech focused publications. Before I make a purchase.

I would recommend this to anyone who has just upgraded to giga band internet and/or is a gamer. Despite what some of the reviews say about this router not living up to its “hype” this has worked out better than expected thus far.

The size does make it cumbersome and bulky but that is really a minor issue to me. We have the router placed in our loft upstairs, In the middle of the home. Compared to the Linksys 1900WTR router, this one replaced, the signal is very strong as we do receive very good signal on our front and back patio (our home is 2701 sq. ft.). We set up the game boost, and my son is very happy for that. I work from home and we do a lot of online meetings, there has been no buffering since I bought this router (after up grading to giga internet with SPECTRUM).

Overall, this router is well worth the money, I also purchased the two-year warranty in addition to the one-year factory warranty. While it has only been a couple weeks since I purchased this so far so good. I will update my review in November 2020.

Again, I would recommend this product.

Great router 9/1/2020 8:13:01 AM

Pros: Excellent speeds
Long range
Amazing optimizations for gaming
Very robust security
All the settings you would ever want

Cons: Unit is very large and bulky
Settings are not in a standard layout and may be hard to find

Overall Review: This is really a great router. Powerful and very capable. Initial setup is fairly easy and you will be up and running in no time. The catch is that in their attempts to tailor this product to gamers, they have seemingly forgotten that the router may be used for other things. Settings are not always located in a place where you would look, and this can make tweaking things difficult. I personally was having issues with certain smart devices seemingly randomly disconnecting. A deeper dive into the router settings pages and I was able to locate a setting that automatically disconnects devices at a defined RSSI (default is -70dBm). This was causing some of my lights and Google Home devices to be removed from the network and seemingly not allowed until they were rebooted manually. Disabling this setting, rebooting the router and then all the afflicted devices seems to have fixed the issue. Having used the AC5300 version, I had similar issues with hidden settings causing unexpected behavior.

Bottom line, if you are buying this you should be prepared to go digging if you need anything outside of the standard gaming configuration and settings.

Fast, easy setup, one gripe 7/22/2020 4:49:22 PM

Pros: Very fast basic setup to internet and of all wi-fi bands available to it.

Cons: Cat5e cable, again.

Overall Review: I know theres been a lot of trust built up for cat5e over the past decade or so, but its time to move on. I have this 25' Cat6 cable on hand and I am able to get more stable speeds out of my gigabite internet connection than this ~2' cat5e cable can provide. It is the Faster of the speeds in the picture provided.

Please, to all network device producers: Its time to move on from cat5e, especially for something 2.5gig or higher ready like this router. Cat6 is what, a few cents more per foot than cat5e? make the change. I even have cat7 cables on the way because I am ready to move on from even cat6 and be future ready.

Easy Set up 7/13/2020 1:02:41 PM

Pros: It is easy to set up if you already have the ASUS app and had an Asus Router previously. It took about 15 minutes to install and set up.

Cons: It only has 4 ports and at this price I wish it had 8 ports . I use wired when possible and wifi when not (Example: smart devices around home).

Overall Review: This is a great router so far. It is fast, robust, and seemingly reliable but I have only had it a few days.

I want to like this...but 7/2/2020 12:01:09 PM

Pros: --2.5G Lan, AX wifi
--Wifi signal is good
--Many nice features for gamers (which I am not)
--well constructed

Cons: Where do I begin?..... I upgraded the firmware from 3.0.0.4.384_6438 to _9165 before getting into the details here. I expected that after almost a year on the market, the firmware updates would be in better shape by now.

--AX wifi band width is only marginally better than my ASUS AC1900 wifi AC band (1.2Gb on the GT vs 866Gb on the AC1900) There is some wifi instability (lost or hung wifi connections) when the 160mb bandwidth mode is selected for the 5g AX bands. AX is of no use if the 160mb bandwidth cannot be used reliably. I had to disabled most of the 5G wifi features before the connections would stay up.
--There is missing documentation relating to the AX settings that are current with the firmware upgrade. You would think that there would be at least a feature update file included with the firmware update. I am not a network engineer as some others are, but proper documentation should help with this.
--Most shared network devices do not appear on the network. There are either issues with network discovery or DHCP. All devices show in the client list on the router, but nowhere else. I have a mix of Win10x64pro and Win7x64 networked systems. Using this router has made network discovery much worse.
--My laptop with 802.11n network, can't see any of the wifi bands.... perhaps it is too old. Although the router is supposed to be compatible with 802.11n bands... at least on the 2.4G channel.
--For the price of the router (expensive) the AX wifi is not ready for prime time. This router may be good for gaming, with a 2.5G LAN connection, but not using AX wifi. I am not a gamer and purchased this for the 2.5G and AX wifi capability....looking for a method to relatively quickly transfer network data between AX wifi devices and a 10G LAN. Not good for this.

Overall Review: Perhaps given another year of firmware updates, this router may be superior to the AC1900. For gaming it may be quite the hot item, but not for serious networking.

Easy Set up 6/24/2020 10:16:33 AM

Pros: I received the router today and set it up. It was incredibly easy to set up. Screwing on the antennas took longer than setting up my network. I do not have a large house, but when we added on and improved the insulation in the walls, I would get a weak signal, maybe two to three bars out of five. With this new router I have full signal and my internet speed is much more stable.

Overall Review: Since this the first day of use, as of now I recommend the router especially if you have a large home. If anything changes; good or bad I will update my review.
