But buy from different vendor! 5/5/2020 3:54:33 PM

Pros: Product is great! My three year old uses it for kids youtube and PBS kids!

Cons: Buy from a different vendor! This vendor was happy to take my money for expedited shipping and then be late. Took them almost a week to ship.

Overall Review: Newegg is really getting bad with their standards of service. And their vendors are even worse. After almost 15 years of business with them I am looking for another place to buy my electronics.

A compact and durable-feeling Chromebook with a nice display 12/18/2019 10:26:21 AM

Pros: It's compact, and the metal case gives it a rugged feel (I haven't drop-tested it). The display is bright and clear. It has good selection of external ports. Battery life on standby is excellent.

Cons: "Assembled in China."

Overall Review: I'd consider this an above-average way to get into a relatively low-cost Chromebook. I've been very pleased with it so far, using it mainly for Gmail, Google Docs, and cloud storage, so I haven't had to push the CPU to its limits.

Unexceptional. 7/30/2018 5:09:05 PM

Pros: - Pretty cheap.
- 180 screen is pretty nice, works well, touchscreen. Makes reading very nice.
- Metal makes it feel substantial.

Cons: - Annoyingly laggy and slow.
- Doesn't like to have more than 2-3 tabs open.
- Bluetooth is glitchy and weird.
- Get very hot while charging.
ITS JUST SO SLOW.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Aaron,

It's good to know that you like the pricetag, screen quality, aesthetics and the touchscreen features on the Chromebook. I certainly understand your disappointment regarding the slow system performance. Since this is a web base computer and it relies on a internet connection for system stability and performance, please verify if the unit has access to a stable and a high-speed internet service. Also, by clearing browsing history and minimizing the number of opened browser tabs will help improve and maintain optimum system stability and performance. Make sure the unit is running with the most current OS update. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you can speak to an ASUS live support agent 24/7 at http://bit.ly/AsusLiveChat.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

Near perfection in a travel chromebook 12/3/2017 4:33:52 PM

Pros: At a hair under 2 pounds and roughly 10.3" x 7.3" x 0.5" in size, this little guy offers substantially more portability than either my 11.5" Acer or 13.3" Toshiba chromebooks. In addition, it actually has Android app capability right now, unlike my old Acer or my 2015 Toshiba, the latter of which has been on the "Android apps coming soon" list for the past two years. At this point, there is little that I can't do through the browser, so Android capability is not as important to me now as it was even one year ago. In fact the only Android app I have actually installed is the Google app, so I can view the stuff in my Google feed without having to break out my phone. Some day, however, I might need something else from the Android Play Store and it is comforting to know that I can install and run it on this little guy.

Screen: The screen is fine. Given the small screen size, I don't really miss a higher resolution, and the brightness has more than enough range. I find it to be comfortable at half brightness in normal room light. The screen on my Toshiba is regarded as one of the best on any chromebook, but I have not found myself missing it while using this little Asus.

A note about the touchscreen: I have read reviews in which the authors wondered if the screen is made of glass or plastic. I believe that is because right out of the box, your finger drags a bit rather than moving easily over the screen surface. It occurred to me that there might be some sort of film or coating left-over from manufacturing. I gave it a thorough wiping with a clean microfiber cloth and that was all it took. The screen no longer feels draggy and touch sensitivity seems to have improved as well.

Keyboard: I have large hands. While the keyboard is clearly not really full size, it is close enough that I can type as quickly and with no more errors than I do on my other laptops.

Trackpad: No complaints.

Performance: Performance seems to be at least on a par with my Toshiba. I have not encountered any issues with slowdown with a full complement of open tabs. I don't do any gaming, but video runs well.

Tablet mode: With the screen wrapped around to the back, you technically have a thick, heavy tablet. This experience and appearance would have been far better if Asus had flattened the edges of the screen and keyboard (like a Lenovo Yoga) rather than rounding them to kinda sharp edges. Not sharp like you are going to cut yourself, but you know those edges are there when holding the machine in tablet mode. The whole tablet thing is a secondary use for me, so I don't mind it much, but if you are primarily interested in using it that way, you might be disappointed. Functionally, however, it works fine.

Cons: The only things I really would have liked are more local storage space and a backlit keyboard. The former could be an issue if you expect to load up with Android apps, which currently (Dec 2017) cannot be installed on an SD card and for the most part cannot use the SD card on a chromebook for data storage either. That means if you want to download a bunch of video to watch later with Netflix or Amzn Video apps on your overseas flight, you are out of luck. Right now with no downloads to eat up space, there is only 7.3 GB of free space on my machine’s 16 GB of internal storage. Best quality video from Amzn uses about half a gig per hour of play. You can do the math -- that 7 GB is going to get eaten up fast if you download a bunch of media. The good news is that SOME Android media players and the built-in Chrome media players CAN access storage on the SD card, so if you own your own videos and music, you can put that stuff on the SD card and play it. You just can't do it with downloaded Netflix or Amzn Video content. This situation with the Android apps and the SD card is a known issue and may be resolved eventually, and afflicts ALL chromebooks, not just the Asus C101.

A backlit keyboard would have been great, but, alas, the C101 doesn't have that feature. A workaround is to pack a little light you can plug into the USB port of the computer. Look for “usb keyboard light” on Amzn.

Overall Review: Bottom line is that I am very happy with this purchase, especially at a black friday price of $250.
