Get more power and lower your electricity bill with the new EarthWatts Green series! One of the most environmentally-friendly power supplies available, the EarthWatts EA-550 Green efficiently delivers 550 Watts of reliable and stable power while meeting the Bronze level of efficiency from 80 PLUS , the most widely recognized independent standard in power supply efficiency. On top of that, this EarthWatts Green power supply offers Universal Input to automatically work on any power grid on the planet, and a 120 mm low-noise cooling fan to keep cool. Pros: 80 Plus Bronze! This was purchased for a pseudo-server that runs around the clock and I wanted to scrape a little from the electric bill. A platinum rated PSU would have been nice, but I couldn't beat the power/price ratio here. I've also read that the Earthwatts line concentrates its efficiency at different load levels than the 80 Plus certifications use for measurement, so this PSU is very likely more efficient than the Bronze certification gives it credit for. It's also SUPER SUPER quiet, which further qualifies it for round-the-clock server duty.
Cons: Two 12V rails? Perhaps this has something to do with the efficiency, but I find it a hassle. There are also only 2 PCIe connectors, so if you are planning to crossfire/SLI two or more video cards that each have two power connectors (as many high-end cards do) you will need some adapters. It's not modular. Consider the price and get clever with the tie wraps.
Overall Review: My little server doesn't have an externally powered video card (obviously), so 650 watts may be a bit much to power a PDC 5200, three 7200 RPM drives in RAID, a 5900 RPM "green" drive in the backup hotswap bay, and an OS SSD, but at least I know I will have enough power if I add disks to the RAID, replace the backup drive with something more power hungry, or replace the SSD with a platter drive (or some combination therein).
