Died after 10 months

Pros: Great amount of storage-space.

Cons: Con: 12TB can be difficult to afford a backup for. This drive died while I was still saving up for a tape drive. Partition is invalid - not sure how to recover my 12TB of data!!! This drive was a disaster for me.

Manufacturer Response:
Hi James H.,

We regret that the initial installation of your WD Gold drive did not function as expected. We appreciate your time for posting the review.
As a troubleshooting step, please test the drive on Windows using our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program. If it passes the test we recommend testing another drive bay or SATA port on your system.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":
https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=940

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Pros: Lots of storage in a single drive without having to resort to hardware RAID or software "RAID-like" storage pools.

Cons: Like all HDDs, that unavoidable clicky sound.

Other Thoughts: In the future I plan to accelerate this drive with Intel Optane when the prices drop; Since it serves as mostly "warm storage" with a backup sync to my "cold storage" NAS it isn't critical and can wait.

Fast and huge capacity.

Pros: Extremely fast data transfers. I have these connected in a RAID6 using an Intel RAID controller and see read and write speeds well over 700 MB/s. As other have mentioned, these are much more reliable than any Seagate out there.

Cons: DOES NOT SUPPORT PM2 (PUIS). For some reason, WD did not put the jumper block on these drives that allows you to set PM2 (Power Up In Standby). In a server environment, this is useful so that drives start one at a time instead of all at once. Can't do it on these drives.

Other Thoughts: The drives are a bit noisy compared to Red and Red Pro drives, but that's not really an issue in the environment they are designed for (servers). Although the drives don't support PUIS, they have a low-draw startup that takes about 5 seconds to spin up, so it's not a huge issue as long as you have an adequate power supply.

A little noisy but been reliable and speedy so far...

Pros: I have two of these drives running in RAID 0 on a "TerraMaster D2-310 USB Type C External Hard Drive RAID Enclosure" that is connected directly on the motherboard using USB Type C at the back. You might wonder why use these on RAID 0 where failure and corruption has a higher probability. The answer is because I'm using these as an external storage for my Steam Games. These files aren't that critical and I can afford to loose them if that happens. Of course I wouldn't want that to happen so I'm counting on the reliability of these drives.

I'm happy to report that although the drives are kind of noisy when data is being written on it, I haven't encountered any issues. The speed it runs is also faster compared to a HDD directly connected via SATA cable (even at 6Gbps) since these are running on Raid 0 configuration.

To give you an idea, using AJA Video Systems HDD Benchmark, I'm getting an average Write Speed of 440MB/s and 420MB/s Read Spead. That's right... not "Mb/s" but "MB/s"

This might not be as fast compared to SSD speeds but is sure beats the speed of traditional HHDs directly connected via SATA on the motherboard. But the ultimate advantage would be the space this configuration offers. I have close to 700 games on Steam and some of those games can be as big as 40-50GB after its installed. Having a large external storage that also have speed to run these games was the perfect combination.

I have no problems running Tripple A titles at 4k resolution at 144Hz using this set up (I also own an Acer Pradator X27). I monitor these hard drives using Hard Drive Sentinel and it hasn't let me down yet. Of course only time will tell how reliable these HDDs will be. As of this writing, I have owned these HDDs for over 2 months and they haven't let me down yet. I also registered them right away in case they fail.

I forgot to mention, the temps on these drives has been excellent also. It didn't run as hot as my other HDDs. Being enterprise drives, I noticed these ones doesn't stop spinning once I have them installed in the enclosure. Despite that, the max tempt ever recorded was 45°C while the lowest is 34°C. The average and the usual temp I have for them is around 38°C.

Cons: *Noisy when they are writing data
*Expensive

Other Thoughts: I have owned several WDs and Seagate HDDs. Between the two, I have better reliability results on Western Digital drives. The 4TB WD RE Enterprise and 8TB WD Helium filled Enterprise drives I bought a few years ago still runs great.

Until SSDs becomes large/cheap/reliable enough to compete with these drives, these are still one of the best options for storing large collection of games for me. As for important files, I have a different encrypted Raid 10 array planned for that.

Working great until now

Pros: Fast,
Reliable
High Capacity

Cons: price

Other Thoughts: the highest capacity for a single drive. however, be careful as no matter how high end the drive is, there is always a chance to loose data. always keep backups. or setup a storage system like NAS.

Good Enough

Pros: Not that bad of a deal considering on how much I paid for my 4tb black enterprise edition WD drives when they first for out.

Plenty of room I might buy back another one to raid on top of the first one. I like these and will certainly buy some other when they get on sale.

Cons: Can't format clusters at 512 bytes due to Windows 7 limitation, Windows 10 same. So down the end you end up with with about 10tb of space under ntfs.

Major con is if the drive ever fails, you lose it all, and there's nothing that bulky to backup all of it under reasonable manners.

Other Thoughts: Reliability of the brand name. Reliability overtime still remains to be established.

SWEET!

Pros: Everyone knows that Seagate flushed their rep down the toilet. I had 16 of their hdds in raid 50. I am replacing them at least 2 times a year. I wised up and started replacing them with WD, Hitichis, Toshibas and havent replaced any of them in the last 3 years of them replacing the constantly failing Seagates. Seagate has always replaced them under warranty however. I bought 6 of these to replace the 3 tbs in that raid config and used them as singles to copy my data (bu1) so that I could place 10 8tb hdds in and create a primary raid 50 (bu2). Then copy the data to it and then place all 6 in and create a secondary raid 50 for back up. In a external 4 bay usb 3.0, I was able to transfer the data from a single drive to the on the MB 16 tb raid 0 (6 of those 3 tb hdds for bu3) in less than 14 hours at speeds between 200 mbs to 175. I am using win 10 if it matters.

Cons: So far none. I hope to transfer all that data back to the raid before they fail, if they fail?

Other Thoughts: If you can eat the cost, I would recommend them.
