Self Throttles if Hot

Pros: I'm using this primarily for AI simulations in Linux. It's difficult to manage the cooling properties of the Corsair AIO water pump during the 12 hour runs. This cpu will run all 28 threads at 100% and close to 100 C. It will self throttle to prevent damage. I'm very happy with this chip.

Cons: none

Runs extremely hot even with the biggest 360 Cooler Master liquid cooler

Pros: Lots of cores.... to overheat

Cons: Idle at 35. Under load - 104 on some cores.
Running all the best hardware and having done many builds before, my only thought was de-lidding. Not having the need to have done that before, I don’t want to void a $1K+ chip.

I’m not running it overclocked as I normally would any machine.
It’s set to throttle down, but come on Intel, the heat transference from the actual chip to the cover is with paste?

Other Thoughts: Don’t buy until they find a better way to dissipate heat under normal work loads.

Intel should recall all these chips. They have been a solid chip builder for many years, but much of the i9 series.... sort of like Microsoft’s “Windows ME edition”

Great CPU 14 Core/28 Thread

Pros: Overclocks Nicely.
Temps are really good when using liquid cooling.
Was a great choice for a true multi-use Workstation/Desktop it does all the rendering and multi-core work I want with great stability as well as great gaming performance when I am just having fun, the i9 has been rock solid platform and much more stable than Threadripper was. Well worth the extra cost if you care about stability and not having errors.

Cons: Cost for some people is hard to justify.

Other Thoughts: Recommend using an EVGA x299 FTW or EVGA X299 Dark as the motherboard choice if you have plans to overclock it much. I use the EVGA X299 Dark and I have been able to hit 5.3GHz no problem. EVGA is the best know for overclocking boards with insane stability and consistently holding the World Record Benchmarks.
I also use the EKWB Liquid 360 Kit for cooling the CPU and an EVGA GTX 1080 Hydro Copper graphics card. Both share the same cooling loop and all my temps easily stay around 40c when gaming hard for hours and when fully taxing the system with it overclocked I still stay under 60c.
Using G.Skill DDR4 3200MHz Trident Z RAM / 64GB / 16GB Per Stick x 4
And Samsung 970 NVME SSD 1TB x 2

Very nice CPU!

Pros: Very solid performance. Especially in a single-threaded benchmark. Many people these days rush to get CPUs with multiple cores (the more the better!), cough "Threadripper", but what they fail to notice is that multiple cores don't always win the day. Most bench-marking tools that people use are geared to perform well on a multi-cored system by design. Well, guess what, to take advantage of all that with the real-world software and games, those things have to be compiled to support multiple cores. And most are not! So a single threaded performance, which Intel I9 Core line of CPUs excels at, is always a good bargain since almost all software is written to support it.

Cons: Somewhat pricey. Also needs a large (and at times noisy) cooler, in my case a water cooler. Will run hotter and consume more electric power. (My system runs at about 100W on standby.)

Other Thoughts: I had to buy it here as I was scammed when trying to purchase it on A-site (censored real name) for a little bit less money. So PLEASE don't buy any expensive items there. I tried to leave a negative review there about my experience to warn the others, but they turned it down, saying that I need to talk about the product only. OK, I guess they don't care. So learn on my bad example and buy ONLY new components, especially like expensive CPUs. You definitely don't want to buy someone's overclocked CPU for this much money. And Newegg provides a good option here!

Screaming chip

Pros: Smoking fast. Overclocks well. So many cores! With the current Skylake x shortages, I was able to pick up the 7940x for only $150 more then I would have paid for a 7900x. 4 more cores for $150? Yes, please!

Cons: Heat, they do run hot if you OC.
Delid is recommended.
A custom loop is probably required for 4.7 or above.

It's for professionals

Pros: High base clockspeed on a many-core processor

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: To the review below. If you don't have a use for this then keep off all i9s or Threadripper. If you don't "understand" why someone would want/need this then you don't realize a professionals value of their time. If you spend hours of your week rendering/computing and value your time, a many-core CPU like this i9 makes perfect sense.

You don't need this for gaming, gaming+streaming. I don't even think you could make good use of this for video production. This is for scientists, engineers and developers who compile their projects code.

The question is really X299 or X399. That depends on your specific line of work. AMD has the value option, but Intel will have better compatibility and optimization. If your workload isn't crippled by AMD then perhaps it's better to go TR4. If it doesn't play well then get an i9 or dual xeon.

heard they get hot, but so far, im very impressed!

Pros: runs at about 25C when idling, never more than 34C-36C when rendering or compiling . i have an EVGA CLC 280 water cooler on it. i've had the i7 quad core, and the i7 8 core. very pleased with my first i9 14 core! when the 18 core comes down a little in price, i'll be upgrading.

Cons: i have no complaints!

Other Thoughts: would recommend. however, in hindsight, i might have just been better off buying the 18 core for another couple hundred and then i probably wouldn't have needed an upgrade for a very long time...
