Terrific hardware combination - FAST!!

Lenovo 15.6" Y700 (80NV00JNUS) Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 16 GB Memory 256 GB SSD 1 TB HDD Windows 10 Home Gaming Laptop- "ONLY @ NEWEGG"

Pros: Lenovo did a great job of implementing this hardware combination - all the components function well together, no driver issues so far. This laptop is built on a solid frame, has a nice feel, and the 'fit and finish' is much improved over previous Lenovo models. The key board is nice for a laptop, almost no flex and the key travel feels nice. The touchpad is smooth and precise, another big improvement over previous models. I opted to not get the model with the 4K resolution touch screen, as most mobile graphics solutions won't run games at 4K, and a lot of productivity apps don't scale correctly yet at 4K. I'm not going to split performance benchmark hairs here... the SSD loads Windows and apps FAST, and the NVIDIA graphics solution is great for a laptop in this price range. The 16GB will be more than enough for our needs. Fitted with both an SSD and a 1TB mechanical hard drive! The trend in laptops lately has been the elimination of optical drives. Lenovo spent the extra effort and cost to include an external DVDRW, for those times when you just have to use a disc. This was a big plus for me. The battery life in these machines has been reviewed as good, I haven't had a chance to test it myself yet. I bought this mostly for my wife's general use. She is pleased, life is good!

Cons: As expected, this laptop came with Lenovo's pre-installed propriety bloatware/crapware programs, as is common for all the big computer companies. I was just going to uninstall it if I didn't like it. After reading about all the security issues Lenovo has had with their software over the last 2 years, I decided that all this stuff was getting uninstalled right away. It turned out to be a bit difficult as some of it was deeply embedded. I still don't quite have all of it gone. The battery is internal, as opposed to the plug-in external battery packs that are common on a lot of laptops. This will require some extra effort if/when the battery needs to be replaced or upgraded. Lenovo doesn't list any replacements yet, but I do see them already available from a few other sellers. This was a minor concern for me. The NVIDIA updater wouldn't connect to NVIDIA out of the box. I just downloaded it again and reinstalled it, no issues now. This is just nit-picking, the four LEDs for power, hard drive activity, etc. are not visible when looking at the laptop from above. You have to lift the front edge or bend down to see the indicator LEDs. Lenovo should make these visible in the front edge of the palm rest. Another nit-pick, I'm not sure how I feel about the anti-glare screen. The colors seem to be just a bit subdued under certain lighting conditions compared with a glossy screen. This is just a matter of personal preference.

Overall Review: This could easily have been a 5 egg machine, but the bloatware/crapware issue is costing Lenovo 1 egg on this one. Not everyone is going to want to deal with uninstalling all that stuff. However, knowing what I know now, I would still buy another one of these in a heartbeat - you can't go wrong with this hardware package. At the time I ordered it in January, this was a minimum $300 better value compared to competitors (Asus, Alienware, MSI, Dell) that were not quite as well equipped. New Egg even had a better price than Lenovo's own website. For some reason this one wasn't included in the free gaming mouse promotion - oh well. Oh, and CHEERS to New Egg for positively responding to a pricing change issue that came up within 24 hours after I placed the order!

A smooth install - no issues!

MB ASUS | MAXIMUS VIII HERO Z170 R Configurator
MB ASUS | MAXIMUS VIII HERO Z170 R Configurator

Pros: This Z170 board was a great value for the features it has. The UEFI bios is terrific with plenty of overclocking potential, and other general management options. Installed cleanly and booted with no issues.

Cons: Only 1 LAN. Only 1 monitor connection (HDMI) if using the onboard graphics of the cpu. Only 2 USB 2.0 headers. I installed a Corsair H100i v2 cooler which used up 1 of those for the Corsair Link connection, and the other for the front panel ports on the case, soI had nothing left to hook up my memory card reader- problem solved with the purchase of an NZXT IU01 Internal USB hub which adds 3 internal headers and 2 external ports. It was easy to neatly mount in my Fractal Design R5 case.

Overall Review: Time will tell... from all initial indications during the install this board will be great!

This case is amazing!

Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Plenty of modularity here; there is just a plethora of drive cage mounting, and cooling options. Very easy to work in when building, and cable management is great. It will handle a huge graphics card with the proper drive cage configuration. I love the full front and bottom fan filters - no more dust bunny maintenance!

Cons: Tight quarters at the top of the ATX motherboard if you are mounting a radiator in the top position. You should hook up the EATX and water pump/cpu connectors before mounting the radiator.

Overall Review: Plenty of cooling - I ordered a couple extra of the Fractal 140mm fans. This thing is REALLY quiet and moves a LOT of air! It was for my wife's new computer and she is happy with the silence - life is good! Now she is complaining about the fan noise from my old box, so I will get to order one of these for myself as well! We shall see how the temps do after this thing gets stressed a little bit. I was a bit worried about temps, with all the sound-deadening material on the inside surfaces, but so far that has not been an issue at all. I like the 3-speed fan switch on the front panel, but I'm not sure if I should let the motherboard control the fans, or do it manually. I'll have to try both ways I suppose.

A great all-in-one liquid cooling solution!

Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 Extreme Performance Water / Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm (CW-9060025-WW)

Pros: The two 120mm fans are quiet and move a LOT of air. The water pump is generally inaudible.

The radiator was easily mounted in the top of my Fractal Design R5 case.

Cons: The hardware pack was short 8 of the 16 needed washers to mount the radiator. The screws can't be tightened completely without them. So, a quick trip to Home Depot to pick up some #6 .032 black fiber washers and problem solved.

When tightening the standoffs for the Intel backing plate on the motherboard the backing plate is not drawn up tight against the back of the motherboard. After studying this dilemma for about 15 minutes I went ahead and mounted the water pump on the cpu, and the big thumbscrews provided tightened everything up just fine, and the water pump was secure. Some redesign of the standoffs or the backing plate mounts should be explored here. These cons were minor and not a big enough deal to subtract an egg.

Overall Review: I haven't really put this cooler under any stress yet, but from all indications it will be amazing.

NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: This router is rich with features, I chose it mainly to be future-proof for a while. The range is great on the 2.4 GHz band. I live in a single level 1800 sq ft house, and get a great connection speed everywhere. I don't own any devices yet that operate on the 5 GHz band, so no feedback on that yet.

Cons: Like I said, the router is feature-rich, but the firmware seems somewhat poorly implemented to me. Sometimes, multiple clicks on an item are required to populate information in the tables, and the screen will show different fonts on successive clicks for an item. This can certainly be fixed with a good firmware update, but I just got the latest one today, and no fix yet. So not sure I trust the security completely yet...

Overall Review: I'm surprised that all the glowing reviews I read about this router didn't mention the glitchy firmware. Still, this is a great router with great potential, if Netgear pays attention and keeps developing the firmware. Just got a new DVD/BR player and will soon be streaming content from my PC in the back bedroom to the DVD player in the living room. This is where this router will shine.

Pros: This was a STEAL at $499 with free shipping !! Price was $130 lower than the best deal on Dell's own website, way to go Newegg! Newer processor, bigger hard drive, and discrete graphics card when compared to other notebooks in the same price range.

Cons: Unfortunately, a fingerprint magnet, plenty of bloat-ware to remove. Battery life could be better, only about 2.5 to 3 hours on the first two charges just with random web surfing and short web video playback, thus only 4 eggs.

Overall Review: If Dell would fix the 6-cell standard battery life to something respectable this would be a complete winner. A 9-cell longer life battery is available, but expensive.
