5 out of 5 eggsDecent little machine!

Pros: - Runs Windows 8.1 Update 1 without a hitch.
- Packed well, ran immediately out of the box.
- Attractive case in great shape. Doesn't look like a refurbished unit at all.
- Easily upgradeable to SSD.

Cons: - No USB 3.0.
- Only 2 SATA ports.

Other Thoughts: I am curious - exactly how many of these refurbished units could there possibly be??? Apparently this series was carried by Wal Mart (appears to be discontinued as of 4-2014) but wow, I can only wonder at the poor quality control that resulted in hundreds/thousands of these refurbished units being sold.

That being said, I purchased two of them. They both arrived on time, and they both appear to be brand new. Both were promptly upgraded to Windows 8.1 Update 1 without a hitch. I upgraded both to SanDisk Extreme 256 GB SSDs, which helped enormously with boot times and overall system speed. The case is easily opened and you don't need a drive cage adapter to install the SSD - the mounting holes for a 2.5" drive are already there!

I don't understand all the hate this little computer is getting in these comments. I see people wanting to make this computer into a video streamer/server, image editor, and game server?!? Get real folks! This little system is for what most people do on a computer, which is browse the 'Net, answer email, and run an occasional spreadsheet or Word document. If that's what you need a computer for, look no further than this system!

For those of you that want a gaming rig, look elsewhere! You can't get something for nothing, so don't expect a $170 computer to pull gaming duty. For those that want a competent web browser in an attractive, compact case, this machine is your hot ticket! Once you upgrade to an SSD, this machine is also stone silent - the power supply (220 W max) is completely quiet, and makes no noise.

I am very happy with my purchase, and I believe you will be too.

5 out of 5 eggsBargain

Pros: Cheap, looks and packaged like it was brand new
Quiet, small, HDMI

Cons: A little slow, but really not a concern for me at this price. I am using DSL and wireless adapter. Some videos can take a while to load with my setup.

Other Thoughts: I use it on a Vizio 42" to read the newspaper, email, surf, photos, etc. Surprisingly good resolution. Win8 is not as bad as I heard(at least not for me).

5 out of 5 eggsLegit little computer

Pros: So far so good with this great little PC. Form factor is great and it is very quiet. Upgraded easily to win 8.1. I can stream video over home network while ripping a DVD and copying files to another directory so the processor has more grunt than I thought. It hooked straight up to HDMI input on my tv and has been rocking as a HTPC media server and flash game you tube netflix option for my kids. Very happy with it so far, as long as it lasts I'm thrilled with it for the price. Almost disposable, only $69 more than Apple or Fire TV yet does so much more.

Cons: No on board wireless or Bluetooth or USB 3.0

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: No idea. If it would work I may have some.

Cons: Computer was DOA. My office wasn't ready yet and stupid me I didn't at least set it up to make sure it worked. I just took it out of the box today and it is dead. Just past the 90 day warranty.

Other Thoughts: Would give it zero for a rating if possible.

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet

Pros: The 18 Watt CPU allows this machine to be very quiet. The loudest noise it makes is the hard drive seeking.

Decent graphics; plays Civ V well.

Cons: Lacking in CPU performance. The 1.48 GHz CPU is slower than most mobile or desktop CPUs on the market.

Did not include the keyboard pictured. The keyboard it came with is decent, just not as attractive as the one pictured.

4 out of 5 eggsNice deal

Pros: inexpensive, lots of usb ports, front sd card reader, smallish form factor, 500 GB HD, somewhat modern bios, win 8 license; 6GB Ram

Cons: very hard time figuring out how to dual boot to linux due to efi bios and secure boot feature (my ignorance). Very noisy DVD drive. Loading win7 from DVD took forever! Form factor too large. Keyboard is not a keeper. I like the appearance and the feel is appealing but the keys didn't always work when hit. Annoying. Mouse has a cheesy feel too (pun) but it didn't misbehave.

Other Thoughts: Great value! I found using REFIND (boot manager) I could dual boot linux and win 7 without getting rid of GPT partitioning. I don't know if the win 8 install is downgradable. I jumped the gun and installed a win7 license from my family pack. I wish I would have found that out first. I did do the free upgrade to 8.1 but found win 8 in general a pain to get it how I liked it (like win 7). Also, I did not find the change in paradigm to my liking.
AMD video is adequate. There is some heavy downloading from the gateway site to update the window drivers but that went smoothly. The Debian/XFCE install required a few non free drivers but no hiccups there either. Really a nice package to get some work done (word processing and spreadsheets) and hobby stuff. Using refiND boot manager I was able to replace the windows boot manager and boot both win7 and linux. This is a buy. Just hope it holds up over time. Gateway on the badge but it's an Acer MB and Pioneer DVD and ATI graphics card (integrated). There are two expansion slots that can only take small boards (low profile). The power supply is smallish. I have had the unit since November 2013 with light use till now. Will use as main windows desktop.

5 out of 5 eggsGateway e1500

Pros: Update fyi: I bought this little Gateway and a Trendnet usb WiFi adapter when on sale here at newegg. It's a solid little adapter with blazing fast reliable speed, being served from a standard u verse wireless router. Great pair so far!

Cons: none so far, I knew what I was buying and like what I got.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great, purpose built at a great price.

Pros: Using this machine as a htpc/internet browser/ kids internet game pc, on a 47" LG LCD (720p) using the hdmi for the tv and the aux audio port to run a cheap live sound bar that sounds better and louder connected to this Gateway than my iPod, or iPhone. The picture is good, we watch hd dvds (yes 720 is still hd and looks great from anywhere in the living room) stream videos from utube, Netflix, hulu, No problems so far. I also hook up my external usb hard drives and use sd cards to swap pictures and watch movies. All EASY and reliable so far (my last amd cpu/pc build lasted 8 years, hope to see a couple out of this e1500 chip and 6g ddr. I use vlc player for movies and Ive had no issues at all, that's a big plus. It is what it is, a bargin for a good bit of value and quality. It runs silent except on start up when the fans and hd spin up.

Cons: none so far

5 out of 5 eggsBuy this

Pros: You can sell the parts in it for more then the computer is worth.'

Cons: Decent Computer. I would recommend giving this computer to a kid as his first computer.

Other Thoughts: The motherboard can be sold, Ram can be sold, HDD W/ Win8 can be sold, case of the computer can be sold, keyboard an mouse can be sold. I can see it being worth $250-$345 in parts that you can sell them on any web store
