3 out of 5 eggsGarbled Mess

Pros: Small Machine Plenty Of Usb 2.0 Ports

Cons: No WiFi Thats A bad start There. Windows 8 is Well Windows 8. The CPU/GPU Runs Hot 100 Celsius. 500 GB Hard drive is Tiny. Doesn't Have A Dvi Connector. (Forced To Buy a New monitor) Doesn't play Video smoothly. The Keyboard is Mushy The Mouse Is DOA The DVD super drive is DOA And No Easy Access To the Hard Drive

Other Thoughts: Overall Its Made For People That Just use the Internet And it cant even do that So stay a 50 Foot Radius from this Machine

5 out of 5 eggsAn good W8.1 machine If your expecations are realistic

Pros: A good Win 8.1 machine for someone with modest needs and some patience. Plenty of RAM for everyday tasks and even heavy video editing if you are patient. Very low power consumption. I don't think I measured anything much beyond 30 watts once booted, and only a few watts when idling.

Cons: Not a negative, but realize the speed is more like one of the hotter netbooks. I couldn't find the secret of creating backup disks, or any other way to be able to restore if the hard drive crashed.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a friend, so my observations are only during the time I had it for setup.

If you have a habit of closing down every task or window when you are ready for another, the amount of RAM in this machine makes that unnecessary and even undesirable if you are likely to open the window or task again.

There are only a couple Windows Update packages that are required to install Win 8.1. MS identifies these and they aren't hard to find in a search for Win 8.1 update requirements. Once these two updates are installed, Win 8.1 installs quickly and completely.
I didn't find a way to create backup disks. If you can't either, then use a backup program and external USB HD to save images of the partitions (and do it periodically). I use free version of Reflect. The Gateway support site doesn't cover the Win 8 version of this machine well, if at all.

This machine is a great value IF your expectations are realistic.

3 out of 5 eggsIts OKAY

Pros: It was affordable for what my budget was at the time. It was nice to have and HDMI output. I couldn't find many other desktops with that option in that price range. Its been reliable so far.

Cons: video playback not that great.

Other Thoughts: When I received the item the back of the unit was caved in pretty badly. I needed a computer for school and did not have the time to send it back and wait for another unit. The damage was cosmetic and I figured if it broke down because of it, it would have done it within the 90 days. Im sure If I had wanted to return the item I could have. Needless to say the only issue that came out of that is that sometimes I have to jiggle the hdmi cord to detect it.

1 out of 5 eggs30 days good, then bad.

Pros: Item shipped in good condition. Speed and storage was as expected.

Cons: After about 30 days, the unit would just shut down while on the internet or playing a card game. Now it will shut down randomly. Seems it could be a thermal issue either part or connection. Computer is out in the open where air can circulate.

Other Thoughts: No warranty support, although Newegg website stated it had a 90 day limited parts and labor warranty. Warranty was through manufacturer Gateway. Gateway did not recognize the serial number being covered under any warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsBummer

Pros: It is a nice looking machine with adequate specs that I was going to use as a music server to replace a dead asus pc. Price is right

Cons: The unit had not been correctly refurbished windows-wise. Once I spent quite a bit of time upgrading Win 8 and then to 8.1, it would not allow me to activate/authenticate Windows. The Win8 machines do not come with a windows code sticker as they used to. The code is somewhere in the system, either hidden on the hard drive or in the bios. Setup will automatically read the code and insert it in the proper box onscreen. My code was deemed invalid. Phone calls to Gateway were useless, as the pc was not Gateway refurbed. They would not support it. The refurber - would only allow me to send the unit in for warranty repair at my expense. Microsoft was disinterested. NewEgg di the only thing they could do, a cheerful RMA and a promise of another unit when they are in stock.

Other Thoughts: I almost decided to wipe out windows and install linux but decided to go with the rma. I really have no regrets since this is the very first time I have had problems with a refurbed piece of tech...and Newegg is pretty decent as always with customer service.

4 out of 5 eggsSmall Size, Great Performance

Pros: Runs really fast, zips along programs well
Plays the games I want

Cons: Bulkware, but some of it can easily be removed
No built-in wireless

Other Thoughts: I bought this PC to replace the old one I had for almost five years, and thus far I love it. It's quiet, compared to the old one with its noisy fan, and most of the programs I installed run quite well. I recommend this PC for those who are in the more low-processing non-memory hogging casual gaming category, such as myself.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat at this price

Pros: The PC looks very tempting at the set price. Has plenty of RAM and hard disk storage. Most importantly, the GPU has an HDMI output to turn the unit into an entertainment center. Also has plenty of USB ports.

Cons: This PC has a rather weak CPU, so you should know what you want to use it for. I use mine as an entertainment unit connected to my HDTV, and Youtube videos at 1080p sometimes skip a few frames here and there. It is not too annoying to watch 1080p videos but the best bet is to set the resolution to 720p for a smooth experience.

Other Thoughts: TV connection was hassle free. I just connected the PC to my TV using an HDMI connection and that was it.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat little machine

Pros: does 95% of what most users need in a compute
most of the units are brand new, not reconditioned
EZ to upgrade memory, uses DDR3
Small and energy efficient
Motherboard looks solid.

Cons: not very upgradable.
We have bought 5 of these machines, one of the units, the Win 8 license was not valid, had to swap it out with Newegg. All other units worked fine out of the box.
The processor is rated as a slower unit, will not effect most applications.
Out of the box will take 3 to 5 hours to upgrade to win 8.1 even with DSL.
I speculate this unit which are made around July of 2013 was rejected by W***-mart because of some issue (probably that it did not come with Win 8.1)

Other Thoughts: You could not possible build a machine like this for the money. If it meets you need, go for it!

5 out of 5 eggsDecent little machine!

Pros: - Runs Windows 8.1 Update 1 without a hitch.
- Packed well, ran immediately out of the box.
- Attractive case in great shape. Doesn't look like a refurbished unit at all.
- Easily upgradeable to SSD.

Cons: - No USB 3.0.
- Only 2 SATA ports.

Other Thoughts: I am curious - exactly how many of these refurbished units could there possibly be??? Apparently this series was carried by Wal Mart (appears to be discontinued as of 4-2014) but wow, I can only wonder at the poor quality control that resulted in hundreds/thousands of these refurbished units being sold.

That being said, I purchased two of them. They both arrived on time, and they both appear to be brand new. Both were promptly upgraded to Windows 8.1 Update 1 without a hitch. I upgraded both to SanDisk Extreme 256 GB SSDs, which helped enormously with boot times and overall system speed. The case is easily opened and you don't need a drive cage adapter to install the SSD - the mounting holes for a 2.5" drive are already there!

I don't understand all the hate this little computer is getting in these comments. I see people wanting to make this computer into a video streamer/server, image editor, and game server?!? Get real folks! This little system is for what most people do on a computer, which is browse the 'Net, answer email, and run an occasional spreadsheet or Word document. If that's what you need a computer for, look no further than this system!

For those of you that want a gaming rig, look elsewhere! You can't get something for nothing, so don't expect a $170 computer to pull gaming duty. For those that want a competent web browser in an attractive, compact case, this machine is your hot ticket! Once you upgrade to an SSD, this machine is also stone silent - the power supply (220 W max) is completely quiet, and makes no noise.

I am very happy with my purchase, and I believe you will be too.
