Polk Audio 12" Powered Subwoofer Single

Explosive Performance for Movies and Music

Have a big room? Have the need for big, life-like bass impact? Then the PSW505 is the subwoofer for you. More than a mere brute, the PSW505 is equally at home reproducing all the subtle nuance of a plucked string bass as it is belting out a rocker's roar. Full-featured and over-powered, the PSW505 will rock your world and tick off your neighbors.

PSW505 Features

  • Real wood veneer finish
  • Slot Load Venting improves bass response. The wide, long Slot Load Vent dramatically lessens turbulence, noise and distortion, pouring out a tidal wave of precise, thunderous bass!
  • Polk subs sound better because they're built better. Rock-solid MDF construction (including a 1-inch thick front baffle) suppresses enclosure panel resonance for distortion-free, accurate response.
  • Big 12-inch Long Throw Driver for longer excursion and better linearity.
  • Huge Hi-Roll Surrounds that support their longer excursion.
  • Most powered subwoofers are good for just gut-rumble and boom. Polk understands that you listen to music too so our subs are tight, precise and accurate.
  • High current 300-Watt Continuous (460-Watt Dynamic) power amplifier.
  • Adjustable low pass crossover, phase switch and volume control allows perfect blending with any main speaker.
  • Auto on/off circuit that automatically turns your subwoofer on when it senses a program signal. When no signal is present, the amplifier turns off within 15 minutes
  • Unfiltered LFE input for use with low pass filtered subwoofer output jacks
  • Pro-grade 5-way binding posts speaker inputs and outputs.
  • Magnetically shielded for safe, flexible placement next to a TV or video monitor.

5 out of 5 eggsextreme happy

Pros: I've had two of these subs for a few months. I absolutely love them! They sound very deep and handle music to movies to anything I throw at it. I recommended it to a couple of people.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty decent

Pros: About 5 years old and still going
Pretty loud in a room the size of a 1 car garage

Cons: As other reviewers have stated, it is loose and boomy sounding

Port noise can be horribly loud at certain frequencies

Fuse inexplicably blew after the first year

Volume/crossover knobs need cleaned, they developed noise when turning

Auto-clipping attenuation gets on my nerves (personal opinion, others love it) but in my experience it just forces you to always adjust gains/volumes per media if you're listening at high volumes

Other Thoughts: I am reviewing this sub for my brother. It has basically been through hell and back and is still chugging along. The sub was taken out and mounted backwards (It actually made quite a big difference in the 20-30hz range, and port noise isn't quite as bad), and it has even been temporarily used in a vehicle hooked up to a 500rms Pioneer amp (Yes it really pounds hard in a car)

The inside of the enclosure is pretty interesting and answered my question as to how a sub in such a small box can reach such low frequencies. The port, although tuned well, is too small for a subwoofer with such high xmax, which causes port turbulence (noise) when the sub reaches xmax.

While not an expert, I have designed, tuned, and built many subwoofer enclosures, none of which I've had any problems what-so-ever with port turbulence. I understand they want the sub to be small, but that doesn't mean they have to make the port so small. You CAN design a small box with sufficient port area to alleviate port turbulence and still stay within a reasonable tuning frequency with reasonably flat response.

Also, IMHO, not a fan of rear-firing ports. I've achieved the best results when the port fires the same direction as the woofer. IE: port and woofer firing into the corner will yield positive gains in output. With this sub, it's either the woofer or the port into the corner, not both, so output suffers somewhat. In the case of this sub, it's best to fire the port into the corner (just to help hide the port noise)

5 out of 5 eggsUnbelievable for price!

Pros: Great range down very low (23 hz)
Not underpowered
Clean bass
Incredible sound for the price

Cons: Hard to say these are "cons" but they could be for someone...

Big (think 17x17 cubed)
Heavy (55 lb)
Built for powerful punching lows, should be paired with good fronts and amp to push them that can cover at least down to 80hz with confidence, if not 60hz.
Speaker surround is foam, not a higher quality rubber material

Other Thoughts: This sub is amazing for the price ($169 shipped). It goes very well with my setup. It does not distort at full volume and hits hard enough to vibrate and move on the hard floor. Think a 55lb. 17x17 cube moving by vibration...

Does not need to be turned up more than 1/3 for comfortable listening but has plenty of power if you want to attempt producing cracks in your drywall seams.

5 out of 5 eggswe'll see how it deals with punishment

Pros: polk support, supporting a company that still holds the values of the old guard.

Cons: none in a year installed in someone else's theater whom's install i stand behind for 5.

Other Thoughts: Installed one as part of a whole set with wiring last year for a customer. Doubt it's worth the list (used sunfire subs go for that these days and are a different league), but after install it's more than worth a few hundred. Wanted one myself to beat on and see what it can do outside of a professional setting. He loves it, and polk is a great company still (grill arrived destroyed (it's cheap)) polk was reachable by phone and fixed it with no issue. These people really tried to be a high-end audio company a decade ago, and still hold some of the values krell and the like do.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sub not a BASH amp

Pros: Great price for performance.

Nice deep grunts and impact.

Good extension and db down to around 30 hz

Free Shipping

Cons: This sub-woofer was obviously redesigned. This is my second one to round out by 5.2 setup. The original one is around 4 years old and has the BASH amp. This one did not have a BASH amp. The construction seems a bit more sturdy on the older one as well. It still sounds great.

Other Thoughts: I would still buy this sub again in a heart beat. For movies and games and digs deep and gives you a nice punch. No, it's not an audiophile sub, but it doesnt claim to be. For $169 shipped, it cant be beat.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Sub

Pros: Great sounding bass. Takes sound system to the next level for movies.

Cons: Size - Not that big of a deal because i had plenty of room for a sub. If your limited on space, you'll want to make sure it will fit first.
