Verizon KPC-650
- Pros: The MBR1000 overcomes all my objections to the dir450 (KR1) that I was using with a kluge usb SIIG expresscard adapter. I must report that this router works right out of the box with the KPC-650 from Verizon. Just plug the KPC-650 in the expresscard slot, power up and almost instant internet. When I logged into the router it already knew there was a 1.4 firmware upgrade. Upgrading to 1.4 was easy enough. And when the signal drops out this router reconnects without any fuss. And better yet now my connection always stays in high speed mode.
- Cons: If you unplug your aircard you get an annoying screen telling you the aircard is unplugged! Ya I knew that.
Guess what I found in my car? The INTERNET!
- Pros: This thing is fantastic. It will boot and run on anything between 7 and 14v so it is perfect for a mobile internet setup. I haven't done range testing at the lower voltages, but it was drawing more current at the lower voltages (near constant 13W) which leads me to believe that it was functioning correctly. Works great with a SierraWireless 881 USB modem. I typically get >1.5mbps on 3G.
- Cons: The antennae are NOT removable so you cannot attach any 'gain' replacements (like a 14db cantenna,) but the range is pretty impressive anyway using 802.11n.
- Other Thoughts: I regularly just leave this unit on my dashboard, plugged into the car battery. My Macbook gets 'full' signal strength inside my office (200 ft and 4 walls away.) It's enough to get full 3G bandwidth from Speakeasy's SpeedTest anyway.
I've considered opening it up and soldering three SMA pigtails to the board so I could use mag-mount antennae on my car roof, but I haven't been that bored yet. If I do, I'll likely follow-up with a semi-permanent, remotely switched trunk mount. I could probably just use an extra channel on the car alarm to switch it ;-) Schweeeet....

Excellent Unit
- Pros: It works like a charm. From box to working took less than 15 minutes. No memorable problems, which means there was nothing frustrating or tough to figure out. I've got it using a USB tethered Moto Q running Modem-Link. It appears to be giving me better throughput than the Q tethered directly, though that might be observer error... it also might not be, due to the USB extension cables I have to use with the Q tethered directly.
- Cons: It ain't cheap! Even on sale with a $50 rebate, it ain't cheap.
As others have pointed out, it will not fetch your slippers or paper. It's just as well, I have a St Bernard for that. It also will not cook breakfast. Guess I've got to find something else to do that ;-}
- Other Thoughts: Knowing what I know now, I would've paid full price for this.
I live in a rural area and cannot get DLS or Cable. Satellite is useless for gaming so that's out of the question too. Using my Motorola Q (on Verizon) I am able to get a decent 3G signal in one area of my house. It's not an ideal location for my computer and USB cables will only go so far (and don't charge the Q when they're extended). This box is the ideal solution. I'm able to play WOW on 2 systems using this box and the 3G. Granted, you'll not throw a LAN party on 3G, but you're not on dial-up either!
This is my 1st CradlePoint product. It won't be my last.
Cradlepoint MBR1000 with an iMac
- Pros: Easy initial set-up. It literally took me 5 minutes. I use this device with a Verizon USB727 broadband device to connect cellularly exclusively. There are numerous tweekable options with this device that are far too numerous to mention here. Just check-out the users manual that you can download from the Cradlepoint web-site.
- Cons: For a casual techy, the users manual is immense and overwhelming. But, with some time spent studying it, you can easily sift through the stuff that is relevant to your personal needs. Slightly expensive, but this is really the best option if you live rurally and are obliged to use broadband access.
- Other Thoughts: This is all that I need to have a home network comprised of a PS3, WiFi capable Samsung HDTV, iMacs and Airport Express connected devices.
Incredible Cradlepoint MBR1000
- Pros: In the small field of 3G/4G routers regardless if they are g or n the Cradlepoint stands head and shoulders above the rest of the players. I was using a Linksys WRT54G3GV2-ST g router. The Cradlepoint MBR1000 made that router look pitiful by comparison. The Cradlepoint maintains a solid connection and if the connection is dropped the Cradlepoint immediately reconnects flawlessly. Something the Linksys router would not do. The feature rich Cradlepoint also delivered more range and throughput than my old n Linksys router and certainly over double that of the WRT54G3GV2-ST.
RTFB, a military expression, if you have never set up a network then "read the frigging book". I have been setting up networks for a few years and it amazes me when people tell me the electronic device should be more intuitive! The slave should be smarter? Guess what? The Cradlepoint MBR1000 is 3g connection sharing for dummies. If you can read the last few digits of a MAC address then you can configure
- Cons: It doesn't clean my house, make dinner or fetch my slippers.
- Other Thoughts: Cradlepoint has designed a no brainier full feature router that can utilize three different aircard's and balance out the utilization of them or it can run from a cable connection and use the air card when the Internet service is interrupted. I have used DSL and cable modem connections and they never fail to fail at the most inopportune times. There is no software disk or interminable setup routine, just plug it in, type in the basic password, setup your router name, password and WEP encryption and you are in business. A major plus is Cradlepoint has already configured this router to 4g specifications, the next major speed increase for Internet users like myself with no available WiFi, DSL or cable connection. I wholeheartedly recommend this router to anyone who needs a 3 or 4g router. With fallback capability it can be utilized at home or for a business applications. It may cost just a little more but believe me what you save in time and frustration over the less costly inferior
