2 out of 5 eggsSilly Waste of Time

Pros: Small, Light

Cons: An odd little machine - I downloaded many free books, some pay books, and this strange little device would not open most of them in epub format, which is supposed to be one of the common, accepted formats. Granted, the ebook world had been compared to the Tower of Babel, but the only books I could read were the ones that came on the device, which pretty much filled up the onboard storage. Utilizing an added SD card for storage was pretty mysterious, even though I have been working with tech devices for many years.

Other Thoughts: I returned this unit to Newegg and bought a Kindle, and have never looked back. I use my Kindle every day and love it. This thing is close to the current price of the Kindle, and to me is not even in the same category.

5 out of 5 eggsa lovely little beast

Pros: this thing supports more formats than any of the competitors. bought it 2 years ago before nook existed and kindle was still expensive and i wouldn't trade it for either one. i love that it's really JUST an ereader, ectaco didn't try to stuff it full of extra features. i have never had any issues with it and i use it daily. also love that it's not e-ink, the page-turn flash of e-ink is awful.

Cons: none that i can think of. if you research it before you buy it you won't be disappointed by the lack of e-ink or wifi.

Other Thoughts: ectaco regularly releases free firmware updates on their website, complete with detailed instructions. have found that it's better to put all my books on an SD card since the main memory is small but this isn't a big deal since SD is really cheap now. calibre is a must with the jetbook, as it will tell you what books are already on your device and keeps everything organized.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Reliable - Deserves a zero rating

Pros: For $199.99, there are no pros.

Cons: Not reliable. I've had two and they both died on my in less than 5 months. Ended up having to email Ectaco for a replacement. Two defective jetBooks. The old saying is "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Please read the negative reviews for the jetBooks and see how many people are complaining about it freezing up, needing to be reset, or just not working properly. Read how many people are having problems installing firmware upgrades. Read how many people are having problems getting their jetBook to open DRM protected ebooks, even if DRM support was supposed to be added w/ the recent firmware.

Other Thoughts: I just noticed that this was selling on the Newegg site for $199.99. I don't understand why this unreliable ebook reader is selling for $199.99. That's more expensive than a Kindle and a Nook. I can understand taking a chance and buying this jetBook if it was cheaper. I'm warning anybody that I can, don't waste two hundred dollars on this.

Before you buy this, ask yourself, "Can I trust that this product will last longer than the warranty?" Why buy something if you can't even trust it to work for a couple of years? Do you really feel comfortable w/ the idea of getting your ebook reader replaced every year?

5 out of 5 eggsAfter over a year of Ownership

Pros: You can take it off of me but you will have to prise it from my cold dead hands! Brilliant little device.

Cons: Updating firmware can be a challenge sometimes.

Other Thoughts: My initial review was 4 eggs some 15 months ago, with a years use, including a spell in hospital, I can safely say I can't do without this little thing. In terms of price and reliability it is the best.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: very functional does almost everything and supports meny file formats including most common picture types, mp3s and pdf.
well thought through device many 'missing' features are with good reason such as reducing eye stress.
screen is crystal clear and sharp.
lcd screen so quick smooth update.
20 hour battery
built in dictionaries for 7 languages

Cons: headphones that come with it suck.
no wireless
doesn't do bold or underlining in html format (but does italics)
dictionary somewhat spotty
no direct dictionary search must use word in document to find word in dictionary.
opening a document can take up to 30 seconds if it's large
slowish write speed (like 20-50 kb/s) though usually not a problem get annoying when doing large copies.

Other Thoughts: does not break words on hyphens and doesn't wrap really long words to multiple lines not really a problem unless you make it one with like a 200 character word but sorta strange.

1 out of 5 eggsFalse Economy

Pros: Very readable display, not bad battery life. Very good price.....

Cons: I've spent $75 on books so far on popular eBooks and can't read any of them (except for the ones you can find for "free"). I've spent hours trying to "correct" the DRM issues...... I'm a fairly computer savy guy (MCSE), but I wish I'd never bought these (3 of them).

Other Thoughts: I bought three of these at the same time and gave two away as gifts. Now I'm pretty embarrassed...... I should have spent the extra money on a Kindle.

2 out of 5 eggsI wanted to like this

Pros: nice looking, screen looked great.

Cons: I found I needed to hard reset the thing constantly. Thought it maybe cause I was ooking at large PDF's , but even Audio books would lock up. Maybe it just needs a firmware update, but I did verify I was on the latest.

Other Thoughts: cheap price, but when you factor in the restocking fee, and the shipping to send it back. I would think twice about ordering. At least New egg woul let me return it.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought this back in November '09 due to the price (at the time, it was one of the lowest priced models on Newegg), and after doing some research on the 'net. I've read around 35-40 books in that time, and it's performed it's primary function perfectly. I primarily use the 20 point Arial font for 99% of my reading, and it's very clear and easily readable. Since the screen is a reflective LCD, it doesn't have the annoying black-flash of the e-Ink readers (Kindle, Sony, etc). As for DRM, Ectaco is in the process of updating the regular Jetbook to use the same DRM scheme as their Lite offering. I pretty much carry my jetbook with me everywhere I go, and you can find me reading it whenever I have the opportunity. The PDF support is fair, and it does have troubles with some graphics-heavy PDF's, but that's not what I bought it for so it's been a non-issue for me.

Cons: None really, other than the above mentioned PDF support. I would expect better PDF support on a larger-screened device, but not on these smaller, 5" screen devices.

Other Thoughts: If you get one of these devices, do yourself a favor and contact tech support to be put on the firmware release mailing list. The mailing list seems to be ahead of their web-page changes for releases. I've contacted tech support on a few occasions about firmware releases, and I've always had good contact with them. I would also suggest picking up a 2g SD card, any speed for storage, which should hold a very large number of books. Since the device doesn't currently support DRM, I've been purchasing the multi-format books from Fictionwise, and had no issues with them at all. Any other books I've converted to my preferred ePub format with Calibre (great free software). The only time I've seen any issues with line-breakup have been with poorly formatted documents, which I've fixed by hand on the PC, then they worked perfectly on the device.

1 out of 5 eggsEctaco is NO GO

Pros: * Cheap (for good reasons)
* Reads several basic format ebooks
* Has a few European language support and dictionaries

Cons: * Sub-standard technology: Hardware, Software platforms unknown. Jetbook Lite was recognized when plugged into USB port - but fried up windows, had to hard reboot. Jetbook Full version was never recognized, and promptly went dead.

* Cannot read several common ebook formats.

* Does NOT read PDF file properly: no scrolling, only jumping frames that cut off chunks of texts - useless for PDFs.

* Word wrapping problems when changing fonts: even on Ectaco preload such as The Bible, the text is aligned OK only in smallest font (unreadale), anything bigger, lines get all chopped up.

* NO Customer Support, forget about Technical Support: 2 calls, waiting 40 min/each only to get to the same voicemail in heavy Russian accent. Website has no firmware updates or downloads - must google to get from somewhere else.

* Non-replaceable battery: If your Jetbook reads OK, your luck ends when internal battery dies - you can't replace it, good luck finding Ectaco Customer Service. What's

Other Thoughts: * I would give "0" egg rating if such option is available, as both Jetbook and Jetbook Lite failed.

* Ectaco's headquartes - Long Island City, NY is known for its light industrial (furniture, textile, car parts), grocery, and storage warehouses and parking garages - it's not Silicon Valley of the East, and has NO tech resources. Ectaco makes simple electronic dictionaries for immigrants. Buy it if:

1) you LUV cheapest baseline device that shows words, with dictionary, and don't mind throwing it away in a year or two, or even sooner.

2) you are Eastern European who can't find your language support elsewhere.

* As Ectaco has no service or responses, I am grateful to Newegg's customer service for return/refund.
