Pros: I have reviewed this little box positively in a previous submission.

Cons: None as to the machine.

Other Thoughts: There were peripheral issues; my purchase back in February got very entangled as to rebate.
I don't know that one can fault anything but the rebate system which is, I believe, existentially designed to thwart & discourage any actual rebate $$ happening, but...

There was a huge effort by the service people at both MSI and Newegg (special thanks! to Serina Z -from wherever she may operate-)

And in the mail today was a rebate check from BOTH MSI and Newegg. Glory Be!
I suppose I shall return the Newegg check as they did get me the $$ but were not really responsible for the rebate.

So anyway..a lo-ong travail...but thanks to both Institutions AND their patient and persistent service people.
Too bad it isn't a smoother process.

I upped from 4 stars to 5 because for how rock solid this thing has been for the pricepoint. I originally dropped a star for no Esata and 2 gig limit. If I wanted those options, I could spend about twice the price to get that with other hardware.

Other Thoughts: I reviewd this little box when I bought 2 last December. I just wanted to follow up.

I bought a third one about 3 months ago for a Windows Home Server. WHS installed without any major issues.

Because it it is based on server 2003 you have to use a few drivers with this box. I used the supplied Win XP drivers for those and had no issues. (Server 2003 is the same family as XP)

I put a Sata dvd in for the install and replaced it with a second hard drive after it was installed.

It has been running WHS for 3 months now 24x7 and never crashed and hardly uses any of the machines resources. plenty of free ram and CPU to spare.

The gigabit NIC makes PC back ups and file copies fast and snappy. I am getting about 60-80Mbps file copies off it with 2003 based WHS. I was getting better speeds with Vail (2008 WHS Beta). it was bursting 112Mbps and 90Mbs with single large files (Movies). a bit slower with large directories filled with smaller files.

I wanted to order 1 for Vail.

Pros: I have two of these machines running Ubuntu Linux. Love them! Just ordered a third from NewEgg. The new one has the Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor, but the two previous had the Intel Atom 270 single-core (which is pretty fast for a one-eyed, one-legged chip).

Only 35 Watt power draw off the laptop-type, external power block.

Cons: * ON-OFF button jams when the case is opened.*


SOLUTION: Touch it from both side of the open case to get it clicking on-off again. Happens every time I open the case. Once released from the stuck position, the switch works perfectly every time.

Other Thoughts: Best Mini-ITX case and combo deal out there anywhere!

Pros: Low power consumption - 25 Watts per my Kill-A-Watt.
Runs Ubuntu Server beautifully.
Runs cool and comes with a stand so it hides well behind a HDTV.
2 SATA ports + 6 USB ports makes it ideal for customizing hardware solutions without taking up too much space.

Cons: Case is somewhat hard to put together when it's been taken apart. Ended up having to file pieces of plastic off to get the front cover back on. Documentation written in better English would have helped.

Other Thoughts: For the simple home server this box is ideal. Easy on the budget and easy to customize using bare drives and memory. Probably *not* a HTPC candidate, but I find it better to separate storage from playback.

Pros: took me a asmall, nice idea but:

Cons: well after installing ubuntu, we crapped out not more than a week after install; not to mention windows would have a cow if there was no hd, it didnt want to even look to see what other options i had to install; couldnt trust the power button to work when front cover was on;

Other Thoughts: like i said, 'buntu crapped after less than a week of usecomplains with the windows install disk that setup cant format the drive. i guess i learned to stay away from msi for sure
if this was the box, i cant keep throwing money for wasting more hd drives so..

Pros: Low power draw, even under max load.
Small form factor.
Dual core at a decent price.
Great for general use.
Quiet.

Cons: 2GB memory limit.
Bright blue LED power light (not really a con but, could be annoying to some).
Fan Whir.

Other Thoughts: The fan, even at full speed isn't loud however, as its being throttled depending on system activity, it does have a distinct whir that can annoy some. Its honestly not a big deal to me.

I use it for data backup on my network, as a print server, and for media sharing. Its a good choice for the job since I can leave it on 24/7 and its always available on my network when I need another computer to print or back something up.

The most graphically intense can you can run on it is Quake Arena (its obviously not for gaming). However, it handles hi-def video well. If you need a little more power out of the GMA 950 adapter, you download GMABooster and increase its clock from 166MHz to 400MHz (2.4x boost) safely.

I've never had any problems with over heating ever. If you mount it vertical, read the manual and make sure its right side up (cooling fan toward the top) or sideways with the vents clear. It should not need any 3rd party cooling mods.

Pros: Small, inexpensive, solid construction. Windows 7 64bit installed, all drivers installed automatically. Works fine with WD20EARS 2TB hard drives.

Cons: Fan is loud. I can hear not just wind noise but the actual fan motor making a whirr noise. I am going to replace it with a VANTEC TF6025 60mm Case Fan. No PS2 ports, not a big deal. No eSATA but that's ok for the price.

Other Thoughts: I installed windows 7 64bit. All drivers installed automatically. Windows 7 installed in about 30 minutes. Flash video plays smoothly. I have 2GB RAM and 2qty WD20EARS 2TB hard drives installed. I used a iStarUSA DIY-RHF-03 3.5" to 5.25" Hard Drive Mounting Bracket to mount the second WD20EARS in the optical drive bay. I gave it 4 eggs because the fan that is comes with is loud and is thermal controlled by the motherboard. It isn't so much wind noise as it is the fan motor. I am disappointed that I have to replace the fan straight out of the box because of it's loud motor. I ordered a VANTEC TF6025 60mm Case Fan to replace the fan it came with.

Pros: Small, quiet, cool running. Runs Ubuntu 9.10 Linux out of the box. Construction is firm and layout is well for such a tight fit. Responsive considering such a low power processor.

Cons: None with me.

Other Thoughts: Using as a file server and is very quick for that. Even the desktop environment is fluid. I did not try streaming or playing video to look for jerkiness, but for the size, power consumption, using 3 1/2" HDD, and price it can't be beat.
Where else but NewEgg can you build a 2TB file server with a legal OS for under $300.

Pros: Small, inexpensive, good performance for Windows workstation (Web, Word, Excel, etc).

Cons: Video noise and you can't return/replace with Newegg! If it wasn't for the video issue (and the fact Newegg won't replace it), I'd buy more, but I won't!

Other Thoughts: XP-Pro. 2GB (make sure you order the correct form factor memory), I added an Intel WiFi (works fine).

Pros: Small, price. It's cute. I can't turn it on yet because I ordered the wrong member.... :( see other thoughts!

Cons: external power supply, required SO-DIMM memory, 2GB max!

Other Thoughts: Make sure this is what you want. Newegg does not allow a return/refund on this item.
