4 out of 5 eggsGood HTPC

Pros: Fast boot
Plays HD movies
Small
Quit
Efficient

Cons: A little stutter with HD netflix

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a replacement for an aging home theater PC and have been overall pleased.

In terms of performance, this thing is a fine general purpose PC with enough power for general purpose tasks, as well as the ability to play 1080p movies via HDMI, my chief requirement.

GPU accelerated playback is always smooth, but some less optimized applications (Netflix specifically) can be a little jumpy at times.

Overall I give this product 4/5 eggs.

4 out of 5 eggsSSD Boot Issue Fixed

Pros: Tiny, fast, and drives two monitors. 3 USB ports and a GBE Ethernet port make it useful.

Cons: Can have intermittent boot / crash issues if not setup properly.

Other Thoughts: After the BIOS updated I mentioned in my las review, the final fix to the SSD boot / crash issue was to remove the Muskin label on the mSATA board to allow the Intel thermal pad to reduce the mSATA temperature. With the label, the mSATA board ran at 44C, after removal, it ran at 36C. Now it's reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsIntel #1 at IC's, Not #1 at Drivers

Pros: Tiny, fast, simple and should be reliable. Also quiet.

Cons: I had intermittent Windows 7 blue screen freezes and "no bootable device found" issues for a while. Happy that I seem to have found a fix for it (below).

Other Thoughts: I installed the 0048 BIOS with no luck. Then I set Intel Dynamic Power Technology to OFF in the BIOS and that solved both the Win 7 blue screen issue and SSD boot problem. Also, for what it's worth, I set the video memory size to 64MB (it won't boot if set any higher), and I disabled legacy USB.

2 out of 5 eggsGood, When It Works

Pros: Worked great for two months, Small, silent, fast enough for our application. Love the tiny form factor.

Cons: Died after two months. Intel support web site was a huge circular navigation pain and a dead end, as it could not identify this product, so the only way to get an RMA was to do the live chat.

Other Thoughts: This review is for the NUC DC3217IYE w/ Intel i3. Love the small form-factor. Now that we have a new replacement for the failed unit we'll put it back online and see how long it lasts this time. Hopefully the first failure was a fluke and not a design problem.

1 out of 5 eggsFlawed design

Pros: * Small form factor as a HTPC

Cons: * Overheat like hell.
* Never worked right. Replacement also cannot find the boot device (mSATA SSD).
* Can't be Intel let this product out the door.
* Will never buy any of Intel's desktop products.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little system as long as your expectations are realistic

Pros: Absolutely tiny
Nearly silent
Super fast boot times with Windows 7/8
Decent speed for such a compact i3 system

Cons: Not the most inexpensive system when you add a drive and memory

Power cord really should be included given the price. They're only a few $, but still...

Other Thoughts: People reviewing these negatively aren't being realistic. Of course you can build a more expandable system, and probably a more powerful one, for the same or a little less. But these obviously aren't designed for people looking for expand ability.

These are for people who want a tiny but capable system to bolt to the back of their TV/monitor or put on a shelf. I'm using mine to run a small CNC milling machine, and it's working perfectly.

As soon as my current Intel Atom system I'm using for a TV/movie player kicks the bucket, I'm going to replace it with one of these.

So as long as your expectations are reasonable, these are great little systems. Perfect to attach to a TV to watch movies, internet TV or browse the web. Perfect for a basic desktop system for browsing/e-mail/etc. Perfect for a small home file/print server. If you want high-end graphics for games or the ability to load it up with terabytes of storage, it's simply not for you.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed

Pros: It's small and will mount out of sight behind tv/monitor.

Cons: Hot, noisy, underpowered and expensive for what you get. New tech but lacks USB3.

Other Thoughts: I obtained this through a trade of other parts that were taking up space. I'm glad I didn't waste any cash purchasing it.
The fan is noisy (think cheap laptop fan whine). I wasn't happy with the results by adjusting speeds in the BIOS, so I did a lot of tuning with speedfan, which helped. It's still too noisy for a bedroom HTPC slave.
The selling price doesn't seem too outrageous until you factor in the price of a mSata ssd, a couple of sticks of ram and the "clover leaf" power cord (if you're not a pack rat like me). For the $550 or so it will cost to outfit this thing, you can build a much more powerful, quieter, more expandable mini itx system.
As far as the playback abilities, not bad, not impressive. Bluray rips don't stutter but can be a bit blocky looking at times. An old underpowered Core2Duo with a $19 HD6450 video card runs circles around this and can be much more quiet.
Basically, this thing is small for the sake of being small. A novelty item more than something useful.
Maybe I'll try my hand at making it passively cooled (rather than spending a $100 or more on a heatsink/case).
Just my two cents.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for HTPC

Pros: Small and quiet. More than powerful enough for HD playback. Visual bios is neat.

Cons: Does not come with a power cord... but not that big of a deal. Understandable that it was not included (international packaging)

Other Thoughts: I set this up as a HTPC and it works great. Running ubuntu and xbmc. Hardware video decoding works great.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, but surprising resolution limit.

Pros: Small, low power, cheap(ish).

This makes a great desktop for most of what I use it for (software development, but not heavy processing).

Cons: 1920x1200 is the max resolution it can output. This leaves my 1920x1280 monitor looking just a little off, and there is no way to raise the resolution limit.

I get some audio hum during graphics operations.

4 out of 5 eggsNice little HTPC box, with some shortcomings.

Pros: Compact. Easy setup. Works great so far. The bundle with the Mushkin 120GB SSD is a good value.

Cons: No power cord? Are you kidding me?
Would be nice if it had a regular audio jack. The only audio out is HDMI, and unless you have an HDMI-switching receiver, or reroute audio back out from your TV, it is hard to get sound. I bounght a $8 USB audio dongle, it works fine.

By the time you connect USB audio, keyboard, and mouse, you are out of USB ports.

Other Thoughts: Using this for netflix, browsing, youtube, minor gaming with big HDTV in the living room. Works great.
