3 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: -plenty of memory
-plays almost everything however certain video formats you must buy a plug-in $$$

Cons: -a bit to bulky for most pockets however still doable
-eats batteries like none other, would not trust their ideal situation rating on how long it lasts...
-accessories cost a bucket load of money
-customer support kind of sucks, i guess they are French after all...
-crashes and freezes once and a while
-no duel touch screen =/
-limited apps as far as the app lib goes unless you put the google libarary on it which "voids" the warranty because Archos claims it will damage your device or they just want to use any excuse to get rid of your warranty =D

Other Thoughts: It is pretty sweet if you have the money, wi-fi is kind of stupid sometimes haven't had a lot of trouble with it usually though. Also not all FLASH WEBSITES work right now because they are TAKING FOREVER to release their stupid patch for adobe flash =/....

Also hard to find good cases for it... if you travel a lot it is pretty handy it doesn't do well off the power grid though =( However perhaps if you buy some of the accessories aka rip offs it might help you prolong battery life

2 out of 5 eggsDon't buy for Android Apps

Pros: I considered returning this device when I learned of all its short comings. However it serves the original reason why I purchased it very well. I have high end audio systems and I was noticing a difference between iPod MP3’s and CD’s. That difference is best described as rock music that is recorded in a “wall of sound” mode seemed clipped. You can look up what “wall of sound” means on Wiki.

My primary reason for purchasing this device was I wanted a device with massive storage so I could store my 1000’s of CD’s as uncompressed wav files. For this purpose the Archos 5 was perfect. It also has a better music interface than the iPod because it takes advantage of its large screen. If you are looking for a portable music player that you can setup to obtain the best possible replay from your CD collection this is the device.

Cons: Now for the bad news. If you are purchasing mainly this because it has an Android implementation look elsewhere. The AppsLib seems highly filtered compared to other Android devices and when I inquired about it I was told by Archos support many applications don’t show up because they are qualified for Archos’s larger screen. There are huge holes in the applications available such as Pandora which plays almost anything known to mankind that was recently built to connect to the internet. Pandora plays on every other Android device I checked including Android phones.

Now the horrible news. This is an Android 1.6 platform which among other things it does not support Flash Lite in the Browser. When I inquired in a friendly if it was even technically possible to upgrade this device to 2.1, understanding there is no commitment to do so, again support got highly defensive and combative. Makes me wonder why they won’t share basic information like that and if they are covering up.

Other Thoughts: So I would suggest buying this device if the capabilities it is shipped with meet your needs and don’t plan on a robust Android ecosystem to enhance it…

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Big storage space. Surprisingly light. Big screen. Yes it can fit in a pocket, barely, but not in your tight pants. Putting music on is really simple, no additional software to "manage your music" you just drag and drop with no extra hassle. Supports a wide range of formats, have not encountered one that isn't supported. Three pane desktop provides more than enough space to put apps.

Cons: Out of the box it is glitchy and slightly uncomfortable to be $400. It uses "android library", a locked down version of the android marketplace that offers a fraction of available apps and only allows approved apps. But there is a fix for this, Market4Archos.apk. Onboard speaker is pretty quiet, but I wasn't expecting one to start with. You have to buy additional hardware to get a decent charger (unless you already have a USB to A/C converter), video output, a mic, or a camera. Music player takes a bit to load, but can run in the background when you do other things. For some reason other music player apps cannot find any files even after designating the folders.

Other Thoughts: After applying the market app, it acts like an android phone, without the phone bits. The majority of apps on the market work but some aren't supported because the device simply does not have the hardware. Fixes flash bugs. I got what I paid for, minus the problem with the app market, but that's an easy fix if you do some reading. Pandora, opera, remote desktop and google map apps are amazing on this thing.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: HUGH, does everything you would ever want.

Cons: It can be strange sometimes, but most of the time it works 100%. I have over 26000 mp3s on it and well it works great for taking music everywhere. I have the DVRStation for it, it is great watch stuff on the network all the time. I have dropped a few times and still works great

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: Great device. I like it a lot better than my 32GB Ipod Touch. Did not buy from newegg as had a special that you get free DVR with it. Overall its a great device. Does everything I could ask for and more. Works great with a stylus or your finger. Nice and fast, not slow or laggy like other similar products. Can do multitasking. Easy to setup on the PC

Cons: The GPS isnt that great, was searching for signal for 30+ mins. The archos supports flash, but not in the browser. The android marketplace isnt in place yet for the archos, but its coming. Little bit heavy, but it does have a 500gb hdd in it, so kinda expected it. Battery life is a little short, but again, its a huge screen and was somewhat expected.

Other Thoughts: Very happy with the product, like it a lot better than my previous ipod touch and zune.

1 out of 5 eggsnot ready yet

Pros: neat little unit, gadget factor is high. in other words, it's a "cool device" to show friends and talk about.
android OS is a plus

Cons: plays about 2 minutes of any video file and freezes.
GPS should not be considered a feature, because it's pretty much a joke. a $99 unit from walmart does a way better job.
Just because this is Android powered, don't confuse it with your android phone. the Appslib is a joke, unless you like to play games. most of your favorite apps on your droid are not available on this unit.
basically, the GPS and the video playback are this units claim to fame, and both can be outdone by my ipod touch.
I should have known when newegg said return for exchange only, no refunds.
basically, it's a piece of junk that's not yet ready for the consumer market. it shouldn't be sold the way it is.
don't buy it

Other Thoughts: reminds me of windows vista. everyone said it was awesome.
then you get it and realize you've been had.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful device for power users

Pros: A wonderful device with massive storage, perfect for those wanting to store lots of videos, music, or what have you. It can actually handle some 720p, and plays just about anything you can throw at it besides the most obscure formats with the HD-Video plugin. The nice 5-inch screen is clear, and has a great resolution for web browsing and video. Browsing is responsive.

Since the A5 IT runs Android, you get a huge range of apps for just about anything, and if you have the will and the know-how, you can even install straight up Linux on the device with a little help from Archos.

The thing is beautiful to a fault. For the first few weeks of owning it, I didn't want to even touch the screen for fear of smudging it some. The stainless steel back is especially sensitive to fingerprints, but remains nice looking regardless

The size can be awkward at first, but when you get used to it the size seems to be just right. The large screen allows for easier typing when compared to similar d

Cons: Unfortunately, the massive space that the built in hard drive gives you creates a bottleneck when searching far in videos and music and starting from zero. The slowdown while the disk spins up or seeks to the correct spot can even freeze the device if the attempted seeking is rapid, but it shouldn't happen often if you're careful. The flash storage versions (should) eliminate this and are expandable with the SDHC slot, so be sure to pick the right one for your uses.

This thing charges SLOW without a dock. The Wi-Fi can be spotty sometimes, and the interface may feel laggy while the disk spins up. Freezes can occur if you don't know how to handle the device, but with time and experience you can navigate around them.

Requires plug ins and a dock to truly unleash its potential, fortunately the video plugin and DVR Dock are packaged together.

Other Thoughts: The A5 is definitely a device for those with some knowledge of technology that want good sound quality, a large screen to watch video and browse the web on, huge storage to take everything with you, and support for just about every format out there- including FLAC and H264.

But, don't let lack of experience scare you away from it if it sounds scary from all that. Archos has a dedicated and helpful fanbase in various places across the web, and innovations and solutions for it are found every day. If you are willing to learn and are patient, you can handle the A5.

And of course, Newegg is best.

3 out of 5 eggsBeautiful unit but unreliable

Pros: The unit is beautiful and feels well-built. I love the size and the gorgeous display. The sound quality is also excellent. It's packed with all the features I wanted and many more. Easily customizable and loads of storage space. The touch screen was a pleasant surprize and is very easy to use.

Cons: Unreliable. First the screen froze and I was able to power down - that fixed the problem. A few days later, it froze and the power down wouldn't work so I had to insert a paperclip in the reset hole and that did resolve the problem. It's had a few other flaky moments but today proved to me that I can't rely on the unit to function when I need it. I was using it, doing some minor input when it just blacked out. I hadn't been using it for more than 15 minutes. It was connected to my PC through the mini-USB cable and the battery was fully charged. Nothing worked to turn it on again, except time. I thought it might have overheated because the available docking station ports were very hot. After about an hour, I tried several times to turn it on (power light was out so I thought it was off) and I finally got a splash screen saying it was shutting itself down. After about another hour, I tried several times to turn it on again and it finally worked.

Other Thoughts: I had read other reviews, on other sites, detailing similar issues and hoped that the recent shipment of the 500 GB unit had the bugs worked out. Sadly, my experience wasn't any more positive.

I had a business use for this product, in addition to enjoying all the other fun features, and have decided to return it because I can't rely on it to function when I need it. I'm very disappointed and hope that Archos or other manufacturer can build a more reliable unit of the same size and with the same features as this unit. It's a great concept which I hope someone can perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsamazing gizmo

Pros: This device really can do it all. I performs well, and will work as a PMP right out of the box with no problems. It has a wealth of customization that can be done to it. The potential for this thing is mind boggling. I'm glad I finally own one and will highly recommend this to all my techy friends.

Cons: This can be a very technical device. A good understanding of programming and overall computer knowledge is required for the more advanced stuff. The simple, built in apps and features are still easy enough to use with little understanding; but to unleash the full potential of this device you'll need to know a thing or two about computers.

Other Thoughts: An excellent device and I can't believe I've waited this long to get one. This is replacing my laptop.
