COUGAR VORTEX PWM 120mm Fan: PWM-FUNCTION

PWM-FUNCTION

PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. The 4-Pin connector allows the mainboard to control the fan speed from 800-1500RPM. Fan speed is controlled by the PWM-signal, which delivers a value between 0-100%, the operating voltage remains a constant 12V

Oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves, no friction, extremely quiet

HYDRO-DYNAMIC-BEARING TECHNOLOGY

We defined HDB to Hydro Dynamic Bearing. An oil seal design that has a higher reliability and advantage than conventional fan motor design.
1. High revolution precision, low vibration noise
2. Fluid seal design provide extremely long life span
3. Surface tension effect, runs more smoothly with no friction, extremely quiet
Fluid seal design is achieved through the use of oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves. Bend area is centralized oil and prevented oil leakage out of motor (oil leakage is main problem of sleeve bearing, short life time) . Friction between shaft and HDB will be down due to herringbone structure reaction(friction between the metal is disadvantage of ball bearing, noise & waste heat problem). So HDB conquer sleeve & ball bearing disadvantage to become more reliable & quiet technology for Top-notch fan. Such design concept is successful and applicative on HDD, and we can see a reliability application in it.

HDB, Ball, & Sleeve comparison

Sleeve Ball Hydro-Dynamic
revolution precision mediocre good best
vibration noise mediocre loud quiet
life span (hrs) 30,000 50,000 >150,000
waste heat high high low
Cost low high high

5 out of 5 eggsIt work well

Pros: It works as advertised. It's a 120mm fan.

Cons: It doesn't mow my grass????

Other Thoughts: I used this to replace a fan on a cooler master 212 plus cooler that was making noise at full speed. This one seems a bit quieter and works just as well. I'd buy another if I needed an extra 120mm fan.

5 out of 5 eggsSilent Mover

Pros: Very quiet. Genuinely unable to hear this fan if my ceiling fan is on low... It really is that quiet and pushes a very large quantity of air effortlessly.
Ensure you're able to fit 140mm LxW or this fan wont fit in a 120mm fan slot.
The 15mm depth is fantastic, makes it low profile and frees up space between components

Cons: only .9 static pressure. This isn't a radiator fan, but as a case fan i can't beat it.

3 out of 5 eggsGood fan, PWM drawbacks

Pros: -Very Quiet
-Pushes a great amount of air at full tilt
-good choice for a radiator fan

Cons: Annoying whine at anything under 100% when being used on pwm.

Other Thoughts: I'm not using these fans at under 100% so it's not a huge deal (unless I re purpose them down the road), but these have a noticeable electrical whine when speed limited by pwm.

Some of the comments here reflect this, seems they haven't fixed the problem yet. So beware if you plan to use these on pwm

2 out of 5 eggsWhiny Sounds, Not a Fan

Pros: They definitely do move a lot of air. No question there.

Cons: I am not a freak when it comes to keeping a PC quiet. I can deal with fan noise, however these just have an annoying whiny sound that I am not a fan of. I've picked up three of them for a build and all three have the same noise. I tried them horizontally and vertically. Horizontally was easily worse.

I have been able to compare these fans to three other brands. Swiftech Helix 120mm PWMS, Akasa Viper 120mm PWM, and Noctura 120mm PWM (the recently discontinued faster 120). The Noctura is easily the quietest however it is more expensive so I will compare the Cougar to the Helix and the Viper.

The Swiftech Helix 120mm is a great fan that is actually cheaper than the Cougar but is even better. Faster RPMs, higher static, and moves a very good amount of air at lower RPMs. Likewise with the Viper, which is the best performer and is priced the same as the Cougar. Are the Helixs and Vipers louder than the Cougar at max speed? Obviously as they reach 1800RPMs as opposed to 1500RPMs. What I am trying to say is, for the price of this Cougar there are FAR better fans.

Other Thoughts: Another note. The Viper is overall the loudest of the four brands I mention, however it is not an annoying whiny noise at all. I compare them like this. The Akasa Viper is like an American muscle car while the Cougar is a beat up sedan with a screw on exhaust pipe from Wal Mart.

For the price of the Cougar, go Swiftech or Akasa. They are far far better.

5 out of 5 eggsBest fan I've had in a while

Pros: This is a great fan for both performance and quiet computers. It's so quiet at low RPM and seems to move a decent amount of air compared to a non-PWM Nexus fan that it replaced.

Cons: It's a bit on the heavy side. Only a problem if you're using it on a heatsink, though.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, PWM works perfectly

Pros: Some have complained these fans can whine when speed is reduced. They are fine for me, I have 5 of them 2 of which are mounting horizontally. They all are extremely quiet on low speed. I think Cougar has fixed their PWM issues.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: For the price, I think these are very good PWM fans. I have all 5 running on a splitter with a molex for power. The system sees them as one fan, but they all ramp up together. It works great for my application.

5 out of 5 eggsDead Quiet

Pros: Quiet from minimum voltage to maximum voltage, excellent airflow, good static pressure, antivibration silicon pads, solid frames, true hydro dynamix bearing.

Cons: Orange silicon pads

Other Thoughts: Honestly, these are one of my favorite fans out there. They weren't as good as the stock fans on my Water 2.0 Extreme, but they're dead quiet. I've had 6 of these fans and they're dead quiet in any orientation.

2 out of 5 eggsDissapointed

Pros: - Relatively cheap compared to other brands
- Nice color scheme
- Potentially a good fan; maybe I got a set of bad ones

Cons: - Loud whining sound at low RPM's that is also apparent at higher RPM's albeit not as bad
- Included grommets may not be long enough for some installations

Other Thoughts: Had really high hopes for these fans in the beginning, but I guess I should taken all the bad reviews seriously. As soon as I installed the set of two fans I got, I could here a whining sound from one of them at low RPM's. Completely audible and more annoying than the fan it was replacing. Within hours, the second of these fans began making the same whine. Annoyed, I decided to plug them directly into the PSU thinking maybe they weren't so bad at full speed. That was not the case, so that same day I repackaged them and sent them back to newegg. Maybe it was bad luck, maybe it wasn't but potential buyers beware and heed my warning.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Moves lot of air, cools very well with Corsair H100.

Cons: As noisy as it gets. Whenever the fan is below 100%, you hear a constant very loud and high pitch electrical noise. This is caused by a poor PWM circuit.

How can it get worst? Mount it horizontally, then you will hear all kinds of squeaks and clunks out of these fans.

Pretty unhappy about this situation as I bought 4 for a push-pull setup on a Corsair H100 and I cannot get a hold on customer service. The address they give on their website provides no response. 50$ down the drain, I should have bought Noctuas to start with.

Other Thoughts: Don't bother with PWM from Cougar, just use regular fans with fan controller or use PWM fans from a manufacturer with better PWM implementation and serious customer service. Don't mount their fans horizontally.

5 out of 5 eggsIm a fan of this fan

Pros: Quiet
Moves air
Good Price

Cons: Don't have any

Other Thoughts: I have this running at nearly max rpm and I can barely hear it and it is doing a good job keeping my motherboard and cpu temps down, this is a good fan
