As CPU processing power increases, so does the need to remove the damaging heat that increased power generates. The last thing a computer enthusiast wants when designing their machine is to cap it off with an ugly cooler. The V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP, part of Cooler Master’s V series of CPU coolers, provides a high volume of cooling air and whisper quiet noise levels at a bargain price – and looks good doing it.

A mirror-finished copper base provides optimal thermal transference from the CPU and the surplus heat flows along eight heat pipes to the aluminum cooling fins. A 120mm fan provides silent cooling while spinning on long-lasting rifle bearings.

This already low noise level can be lessened during periods of low thermal generation automatically by using the integrated PWM functionality which lets the BIOS monitor fan performance and thermal need and adjust the fan's speed accordingly. The mounting kit is designed to allow the V8 to easily attach to a wide variety of Intel LGA775/1366 processors as well as AMD CPUs using the AM2+, AM2 or 940 sockets.

  • newegg Eight Heatpipes Eight high performance heatpipes maximize heat transfer to push cooling performance to the next level.
  • newegg Mirror-finished Base A mirror-finished copper base maximizes heat absorption and transfer for excellent cooling.
  • newegg Four Sets of Aluminum Fins Four separate modular sets of aluminum fins create a large heat dissipation surface for unsurpassed cooling performance.
  • newegg Center Mounted 120mm Fan with Fan Speed Controller A 120mm 800 - 1800RPM cooling fan is mounted to the center of the Cooler Master V8 for optimum airflow. The PCI slot fan speed controller supports manual speed adjustments from 7V to 12V for the optimum balance between cooling performance and noise level.
  • newegg Core i7 Compatible Compatible with the socket LGA1366, the Cooler Master V8 supports Intel's latest-generation Core i7 processors. It also features broad compatibility with AMD socket 940, AM2, and AM2+ platforms, as well as the Intel LGA 775 platform.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Piece of Hardware... However...

Pros: At first sight - Well made, great production quality in the cables and the speed adjustment knob/mounting plate is also well made/has good feeling to it.

Upon use - Incredibly silent for it's efficiency, adjustment knob works great.

Cons: At first sight - It's bigger than you think it is. Yeah I'm talking to you, the person who thinks they can imagine the size of this... it's bigger than that. It's easily the size of a child's head.

Upon use - Installation was awkward but that's where the cons stopped.

Other Thoughts: It's hard for me to dock points for being big since it's not a date. This is a great fan, you will need a larger than average case for it to fit properly. I can almost imagine that most of you will blame your case for being too small and not your fan for being too large, since you will be very pleased with it's performance.

Here is a buying guide:
1) If you you have a wide case, get this fan.
2) If you don't have a side case and don't mind bending/cutting a hole in the side of your case, get this fan.
3) If you're thinking of upgrading to a wider case, get this fan.

- If none of the above apply to you, don't get this fan.

5 out of 5 eggsGood value for i7

Pros: Cost/benefit very good. I achieved an immediate 18 degree Celsius temperature drop with an i7 920 overclocked to 3.4 Ghz.

Mounting bracket is very sturdy and installation straight ahead (but you must completely remove your motherboard). While it's large, it fits well in my case and I can easily lift the motherboard out with it attached.
Quiet.

Cons: Very minor gripe - the manual is translated into 18 languages but I'd rather have slighly larger illustrations. But they documented the added support for socket 1366 and labelled the brackets as well.

Other Thoughts: I looked at a number of i7 roundups and the units were all in the $70 and up range. If you can pick this up for $50 (the price as of this writing) it's a good deal.

I was overclocking to 3.4 Ghz on factory air and hitting the max intel rated temp of 100 degrees centigrade (using a couple of different rating utilities, still +/- a few degrees. I push my cpu only when rendering HD video (1080/24p) for long runs (> 15 minutes) and then only hit max for a few seconds. I can now render for 1 1/2 hours and never get above 81 degrees C.

i7-920 with Asus P6T mobo, Radeon HD 4670 driving dual 24" Acer widescreen monitors. Intel 80GB SSD drive plus two TB storage on three 7200 RPM drives.

Windows Scores: processor 7.6, RAM 7.6, Aero 6.7, Gaming Graphics 6.7, Disk transfer rate 7.4

5 out of 5 eggsGood but warning

Pros: works the way it should. No problems so far.

Cons: Do not get it if your own a Thermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS. Will not have enough clearance for the side fan. Side fan will rest on top of the cooler and make a really annoying clicking noise. Its my fault that i did'nt check for the right size but its not the products fault.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat fan, installation not as bad as stated

Pros: This fan cools like none other. Coupled with non-cured arctic silver 5, the bios states that at idle freshly installed CPU temps at 32C. With windows loaded it hits maybe 36C. (CPU = AMD 965BE 3.4Ghz non-OC) Still looking to check out temps on max load. I plan to OC the processor later on as well.

Cons: It is huge! But thats not really a problem.

Other Thoughts: I didn't see any problems with the installation as many stated. Took just as long as any other heatsink. Tip: Get the heatsink in place, then hold it and the board. Flip it over to rest on the heatsink while still holding the board. Screw on the back plate tightly and you are as good as golden.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge, but awesome!

Pros: I did some searching for a heatsink before I bought one to use with my i7 930. I saw that a lot recommended the V8, so I went with it.

This heatsink does its job extremely well. I have this installed in an Antec 1200 on an i7 930. Idle temps are about 28C regularly. That's before the break-in time for the arctic silver as well.

Cons: The only con I can think of is its size. It is very large and you most likely need a full ATX tower for it to fit. The cover on my Antec 1200 has around an inch of room between it and the heatsink.

Other Thoughts: I've always lived by this, "You get what you pay for." Here, that saying has paid off.

4 out of 5 eggsHUGE fan

Pros: Huge, monster fan. Very quiet. Keeps the CPU very cool. Comes with all the hardware to install.

Cons: Huge fan. Unless your case has enough room, a side panel fan will not fit. I installed this in a Thermaltake V9 case. With the side panel closed, there's probably less than 5mm space between the top of the fan and the case cover. I had to remove the side panel fan that came with the case. Replaced it with a 120 mm fan that is offset so that it doesn't touch this fan.

Other Thoughts: Should have read the other reviews before buying this fan ... but no regrets though. Would have given it 5 eggs, but it's so huge that a side panel fan would not fit. So had to knock it down.

5 out of 5 eggsNice cooler...HUGE!

Pros: Huge cooler...great design. Keeps I7 930 below 60C during extended full load. This is before full burn-in of AS-5. If you have a mid-tower you may want to be sure it will fit in your case.

Cons: Odd installation. You have to mount the cooler on the MB before putting into case...has to be secured from the bottom side of the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Not really a con...but HUGE! Had to take off one of my side case fans to fit this in my case. But if I would have done more research I would have found this.
