ASUS VivoBook S400CA

The S400CA is a stunning little laptop, light and slim enough to easily carry around with you all day and done out in a snazzy black and silver color scheme. There's loads of space on the wrist rest, which adds to the comfort of using the chiclet-style keyboard. Although it doesn't look very different to the keyboard found on so many other laptops on the market, it's unusually accurate for touch-typing, with well-sized keys. There’s no unusual positioning or key spacing to throw off your accuracy, either. The touchpad is large and accurate, but centrally positioned in a way that makes it unlikely to be accidentally brushed while typing. The touchpad buttons are built into the pad, rather than being individual keys, but we had no trouble hitting them accurately.

3 out of 5 eggslaptop

Pros: This computer works great on the wired network but the wireless only works good sometime. I like the features on this model but mine does not have the SSD drive so I am going to return it

Cons: NO SSD drive and bad wireless adapter

Other Thoughts: Asus should check this out

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that the computer works great on the wired network. I do understand your concern regarding the WIFI connection related issues and no SSD installed in the laptop . Please verify the laptop is within range to an established wireless router or access point and the wireless router is broadcasting signal properly. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3561536 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect After Replacing Wireless Card

Pros: Solid Budget laptop. Great sound. Nice Keyboard.
Runs Photophop and Illustrator well. Bright screen.

Cons: Poor wireless card. I had to also lower the touchpad sensitivity.

Other Thoughts: I replaced very easily the original wireless card with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106223

Immediately after replacing it and installing the proper drivers my wireless connection problems were solved.
I also noticed that the touchpad was very sensitive so I installed touchfreeze and now I have no problems when accidentally brushing the touch pad with my palm.

It came from the refurbisher looking brand new. No external damage. I think its a solid deal for the specs other than the draw back of having to order it with another wireless card.

3 out of 5 eggsAsus laptop is responsive, but wireless on this is lacking.

Pros: Laptop is pretty quick, and the touch screen seems pretty responsive. Now that I replaced the wireless card on the system, it does everything that I want to do.

Cons: The wireless on this laptop is horrible. I bought this laptop even though all of the other reviews said the same thing thinking it was just a driver issue that needed to be updated. I updated the drivers when it was still on windows 8, and I would get limited connectivity, or when I would get connected it would last for about a minute and then just stop working all together. So I plugged the laptop into the ethernet cable and did all of the windows updates, and other updates that it had for the system, and updated to the newest windows 8 wireless drivers and still had the same problems. I then updated the system to 8.1 and updated the driver to the windows 8.1 wireless driver and still not any better.

I ended up just buying a windows intel internal wireless card for 15 bucks and putting it in. That's been in for a couple of days and the internet is working like a champ now. You can google the wireless card how to put it in and their is a few videos that show you exacly what to do, if you are not wanting to return the laptop. I just installed it and didn't have to update the drivers on this intel wireless card or anything after I installed it.

Other Thoughts: So I would say that since all the reviews on newegg show that it has problems with the wireless, I would think ASUS would be fixing that problem. However that isn't the case as of 2/20/14. So if you are willing to replace the wireless card on it then go and buy it. If not then do some more shopping around.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that you are satisfied with the laptop. I apologize if you are experiencing connectivity issues with the WIFI device. Please verify if the WIFI is within range to an established wireless router or access point that can broadcast properly. A driver maybe needed depending which router is being used. If is also recommended to install all recommended WINDOWS Update and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1. You may need to use a LAN connection to install these updates completely. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3541597 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good buy!

Coming Soon!

Pros: -Lower end but powerful Core i3 3217U
-4GB (integrated on the board) still one slot open
-500GB Seagate Slim HDD design
-Touch Screen of course
-Gigabit LAN (i have a 150MB down/65MB up)
-Nice mostly brushed metal finish, feels very solid

Cons: -4GB (integrated on the board) still one slot open but i guess it's necessary to keep the slim design.
-MSata connector designed to fit half height SSD(See other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: Well the Msata plug positioned to fit a half height SSD but i managed to hook in a Crucial M500 240GB to install windows 8 and use the default Seagate 500GB slim HDD for storage files. Also added a G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) for 8GB total and replaced the Wifi with a Intel 7260HMW BN IEEE 802.11 N300 Mini PCI Express plus Bluetooth 4.0 - Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Combo Adapter with a 130MB connection (almost my full 150MB download).

Note: In video i point out that a little plastic foot need to come off in order to fit a full sized Msata SSD, it does not effect the laptop in anyway.

Also not sure if i am gonna return to ASUS for repair but my Webcam doesn't work or get recognized by the PC.

2 out of 5 eggsWireless is horrible everything else great

Pros: System is pretty quick and touch screen is very responsive.

Cons: The internal wireless card is horrible. I updated the wireless drivers and still get limited / no connection and when it does connect, it will only connect for a few minutes. I updated to windows 8.1 and updated the drivers again and still having the same problem. I even disabled the power saving mode in device manager for the device with no luck.

Other Thoughts: Ordered this intel wireless internal adapter since the wireless NIC that is on the laptop doesn't work properly.

5 out of 5 eggsWicked good deal for Ultrabook

Pros: Great way to experience Windows 8. I'm loving having a touchscreen. It boots up pretty quickly and has reasonable battery life.

Cons: As a refurb, it comes with nothing. In the box was the computer and a power supply. But what else do you really need?

Other Thoughts: For under $400, this notebook can't be beat. I was thinking about getting a refurb Surface RT, but this is cheaper and has the full Windows8 system. Contrary to other reviewers, I have had no problem with wifi.

2 out of 5 eggsStill working out the issues

Pros: Nice looking box. It's what I expected from Asus.

Cons: I've run into a particular annoying issue where the wifi just stops occasionally. It will either go into limited mode or just outright refuse to connect. I have many devices on my network and all run strong except this box. Going to try to update all the drivers and I'll come back to re-rate the unit after I get more acquainted with it as I go through the driver updates.

Other Thoughts: Would think this would have came out as a solid working unit. Hopefully the drivers will fix the "wifi is gone for a little bit" issue that seems to crop up every few minutes. I have been a lifelong Asus motherboard fan so I had felt confident that this box would be the answer for my daughter's christmas gift. Keeping fingers crossed as I go through all the updates.

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints

Pros: Bought this for my wife a few weeks back. Does everything that is expected of it. Not running anything to really weigh down the cpu though so can't truly say what it can handle. She uses it for MS Office13 and work through websites mostly.

Cons: None as of now.

Other Thoughts: Great for everyday use and low process programs. Probably could find something cheaper for those purposes though.
