3 out of 5 eggsASUS fixed the studder!

Pros: ASUS finally fixed that amazingly annoying studder. Computer now has a SEAGATE hdd after repair (not sure what the bad hdd was).

The specs are very good for the price.

Cons: Took two RMAs and several months to get the studder, or freezes, to get fixed, very very frustrating.

900 line display wouldve been nice, but the 768 isnt bad.

Other Thoughts: Ok here's the deal. It took two RMAs, and they sent it to level 2 tech support to find the problem. Replacing the video card didnt fix the studder. Replacing the hard drive did. Yes, even on battery. System works as intended now. What likely happened was that Asus bought a defective batch of HDDs and many of the K61ICs got them installed. It's time for them to do the responsible thing and....
ASUS SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL TO REPLACE THESE HDDs.
In any case I'll issue it for them. If you have the studdering problem be sure to mention ***RMA N-USA1020178. ***

Thats my second RMA, the one where they found a problem with the hdd and replaced it. Replacing the HDD fixed the problem, at least 2 days into watching movies on battery and AC power.

Mentioning my RMA number should help you get the repair you need and should help ASUS by saving them money not having to issue multiple RMAs for everyone while chasing the problem.

Hope this helps.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Asus Customer,

We sincerely apologize that it took 2 RMA's to resolve your issue, if you have any other issues please do email us at aps_support@asus.com

1 out of 5 eggsUpdating the chipset does not fix the stutter. DO NOT BUY THIS

Pros: Not worth it.

Cons: If you use the battery at all and try to play games, watch video or do any other multimedia activity this computer freezes for 1-2 seconds and makes a loud BUZZZZ noise that is extremely annoying. ASUS knows about the problem and has no solution besides replacing the vga adapter. Many people on the vip.asus forums have had their vga adapter replaced to no avail.

I own 3 of these K61 notebooks and they all have the same problem so I can safely say they all do it.

And there is no solution in sight. All of my drivers are up to date and there are absolutely no superfluous programs running in the background. When I disable the vga adapter the stuttering stops.

Other Thoughts: This computer is a big pile of excrement and until ASUS finds a solution to the problem or replaces them with different models I'm going to write bad reviews every chance I get.

DEAR ASUS: ALL OF THEM DO IT SO PLEASE FIX IT OR REPLACE THEM WITH 3 NEW MODELS THAT HAVE A DIFFERENT VGA CARD.

5 out of 5 eggsA Great Value

Pros: Well the specs are fantastic for the Price. The screen is amazing. Asus has preloaded screen settings. I prefer to use soft, which is VERY easy on the eyes. I often got headaches from computer screens and not one since I have been using this.

It runs my games well. I updated the chipset BIOS to fix the stuttering issue in intense programs. Runs Call of Duty 2 and 4 on medium settings with a steady 60-90 fps, even in smoke.

Company of Heroes is medium settings with a steady 60 fps, even when I'm blowing up the map with 16 howitzers.

Wow runs flawlessly. My brother in law plays obsessively while watching my dogs every saturday while my wife and I are at work.

I am a computer Science Student. It runs all computer applications great. It renders movies quickly for a laptop(using Sony Vegas).

Cons: Battery life could be better. But you pay for what is in the specs.

Other Thoughts: This laptop only comes witha 6 cell battery. Other Asus laptops I have seen with an 8 or a 9.

This is the best purchase I have made in 3 years. I am very satisfied with this laptop. The warranties that come with it from Asus are SOOOOOO awesome.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth it

Pros: -This laptop suits the needs of my major in College. I am an Electronics student, and it handles every program with no problem.
- You can actually hear the speakers from 10 feet away. Massive improvement from my last laptop. You could barely hear them with your ear against the speakers.
- Its a quality laptop. Reliable, and will handle most things.
-Great Warranty
2 years global parts and labor, with a one year accidentally warranty.
-Portable. I use it in school, and at home everyday for school and recreational uses, like Hulu Desktop, or Boxee beta, or games like Eufloria, Portal, CSS, and others.
-Decent amount of hard drive space for a laptop. I store alot of music on it, and listen to it almost all the time when home.
- Runs Netflix excellently
- Quite and runs cool. I haven't had this machine heat up on me that much yet, and I use Handbreak frequently.

Cons: - Once in a while, while listening to music, it stutters. only for a second, but it gets annoying. Not sure if this could be a glitch with Windows 7 x64bit, or the laptop itself. I have actually heard my friends brand new Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 x64 bit do this as well.
- I would really preffer a higher resolution, but atleast I have 720p capabilities with 1366x768.
-Finger printy, and easily scuffed up. I spend about 5 mins. every 4 hours wiping down the mouse pad area.
- I hate windows Bloatware, but with Revo uninstaller, that is not a problem.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is probably best suited for somebody who needs something reliable, with a good warranty. I have seen some of the other reviews, and other people have had some problems with shipping, and RMA' able issues, but I haven't had any issues other then the stutter.

Other then the stutter, and not the greatest resolution, I would gladly rate this machine with 5 eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop but unfortunate stuttering :(

Pros: Great price, fast and great for gaming. I love how it fast it loads and most games can be run at high settings

Cons: Just recently, just like the other reviewer, i am getting a lotta stuttering, like the monitor would stutter or "Refresh", at first i thought it mustve been the lack of sleep and my eyes were playing tricks on me but no..it actually blacks in and out rapidly and temporarily..its very annoying :(

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

Pros: Screen dimensions allow for a comfortably sized keyboard. No dead pixels. The high gloss of the laptop looks nice. USB ports are on both sides of the laptop, which is very convenient. Runs everything I've tried without issue. Came with Windows 7 64-bit (It was not entirely clear whether it came with 32- or 64-bit from the product descriptions).

Cons: Low battery life (~2 hours with medium-low monitor brightness) using standard 6-cell Li battery. The high gloss of the laptop picks up fingerprints and smudges like nothing else.

Other Thoughts: First arrived with a crack in the frame; was quickly RMA'd (overall completion ~1-2 weeks). Contrary to other reports of BSOD's, I've not had any problems. Running the factory installed setup with partitions intact. Windows Experience Index comes out to: Processor (5.7), RAM (5.7), Graphics (4.9), Gaming Graphics (6.3), Primary Hard Disk (5.9).

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Multimedia Laptop

Pros: -The best, if not close, specs in this price range after tons of shopping around.
-Runs icey cool in its solid chassis. Even when stressed.
-Display is bright and sharp, without any lightbleed around the edges. Once calibrated, it's great.
-Keyboard is a chiclet-inspired and has good feel and responsiveness. Numpad.
-Dedicated video for games/htpc usage. (It's a 9600m GT rebadge)
-I updated the Nvidia driver as soon as I could. No shuttering or the like. FPS makes L4D2 very playable, but dont expect it to do Clear Sky.
-Fast boot times.
-Did not come damaged at all, was packed well.

Cons: -UPS International shipping. Got stuck at customs for reasons unknown to myself.I had to call UPS myself a few times to finally get them to move it. Ordered 11/30, deliver date 12/09. Got it 12/22. I don't care so much about why it got stuck now, but Newegg should know about it. -1 egg.
-Not really a con, comes partitioned has a OS/DATA split. Its 70gb on the OS. Not enough of an annoyance to make me wipe it though.
-Atypical bloatware. After removal of it and no reinstall, takes 50 seconds to boot to desktop.
-Display is horrid out of box. Calibrate it.
-A nitpickers con: It can get "loud". By laptop standards.
It's more a sound of reassurance to me.

Other Thoughts: Battery life makes this laptop more of a portable HTPC or a quick and dirty desktop replacement. Which it is meant to be people.
If you want godly battery life, get a laptop with switchable GPUs or integrated. Like the Asus UL/MBP/netbook.
Mine came with the ST932042 Seagate.
No use complaining about laptop speakers.
Touchpad is swell for quick uses, I use mice whenever I can.
Idles GPU@43 CPU@45, have yet to see either hit 70. Checking with Speedfan daily. Very impressive for a laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsFrequent Stutter

Pros: Lightweight, Windows 7, awesome specs for the money.

Cons: Got this as an XMAS present for my girlfrield, first time we flipped it open the plastic screen hinge (right side) broke off (not a bright start) we superglued it back and everything was more or less normal until we noticed the issue in the next sentence. Every 2-3 minutes the laptop stutters for 3-10 seconds (or longer), not only in game during "hot" moments of high cpu but even sitting idle, or just browsing the internet. At first I thought this was a realtek driver issue (had plenty of realtek issues before) so we got the newest drivers from the asus website and the stuttering remains. I will be contacting newegg/asus to see what we can do about this dud of a XMAS present

Other Thoughts: besides the stuttering and the hinge (which is only cosmetic) this is a good laptop for the price, perhaps I was unlucky and got a bad unit :(

4 out of 5 eggsgood labtop for the money

Pros: core 2 dual - 4gigs ram - 7200 hard drive - 1gig video - windows 7 64 bit
warranty if i get it

Cons: battery life - 2 hours maybe - no one wants a labtop that needs to be plugged in all the time - i don't like the partition division but that is easily fixed with the recovery option

Other Thoughts: this is my third review since buying this labtop the first 2 were not published - according to the web page and a return email from newegg the warranty is 1 year accident 2 year parts and 3 years labor but after contacting asus iam told its a standard 2 year labtop warranty - ( i have yet to get the 1 year accidental - after registering the labtop on asus they say it doesnt qualify???????????? thats was 1 of the main reasons for buying this this
