4 out of 5 eggsGreat gaming laptop

Pros: Excellent performance. Good screen quality. Plays GTA IV in native resolution at a framerate equivalent to what I got with an AMD Athlon X2 6000+ and a Radeon 4850 1GB, 2 GBs RAM, Win XP. How that's possible? I think the computer in the old system severly hindered performance. Plays Fallout 3 well with good settings. I don't think anything newer will run at Max settings, but Half-Life 2 runs with all max settings and native resolution with nary a hiccough. All in all, I'm very pleased with the performance.

Cons: To be expected, but poor battery life. If I'm playing a game, such as Fallout 3, without the laptop plugged in I get about 45 minutes of juice. The built-in speakers are quiet. Really quiet. The sound quality isn't bad, but at its loudest I cannot hear a movie if I have a fan on, or the windows open. Invest in a good set of headphones and you'll be fine though.

Other Thoughts: Many people complained that this computer came pre-installed with 32-bit Windows Vista, but my computer came preinstalled with 64-bit.

4 out of 5 eggsA solid laptop.

Pros: Good amount of RAM, decent CPU and GPU. Many flashy bells and whistles like blinking LED lights and a digital display screen above keyboard that shows miscellaneous statistics like memory/CPU usage. Plays Armed Assault and all my Steam games a lot better than my desktop.

Cons: The GPU runs a little hot even while in idle (Around to 50-55 degreed Celsius), even hotter while gaming. I had to buy laptop cooler so I didn't accidentally kill my investment prematurely.

ASUS also formatted the HDD into two partitions which I found annoying, they encrypted the second partition for use with their data protection software (Much like TrueCrypt). Anyways, it's probably a plus for those who have naughty things on their hard drive, but I just find it annoying because ASUS didn't give me the option to choose to have an encrypted partition and TrueCrypt is so much more better...

Other Thoughts: I had this laptop for good 2 months now, didn't act up on me so far. I mainly use it for gaming now as it puts my desktop to shame. As I said before this notebook runs hot while gaming, definitely get a laptop cooler for it! I got Antec notebook cooler and I see a significant change in temp (Around 10-15C difference).

2 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop but...

Pros: top of the line components, everything is fast

Cons: wireless connection fails once every half an hour or so. It won't reconnect again unless I restart the machine. Max time it stayed online is about 1 hour. Tried with the ASUS driver, then Intel, called ASUS tech support, did full system restore, that didn't help. They also said I should take the battery out and leave it for half hour without any power just in case there was some static electricity.
That didn't help either.... I am tired of restarting it every 30 minutes

Other Thoughts: I like the laptop but this wireless card is ruining it . I had the Asus M50 before this one, never had any issues. I don't know if I am going to go with Asus again unless I find a way to resolve this issue

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING

Pros: Snazzy looking laptop.
No keyboard flex whatsoever, and the right amount of pressure needed to press keys, not too loose like other laptops.
Spacious keyboard.
the digital display thing & the touch buttons
the asus software thats used to control everything from volume to profiles to all other stuff is pretty and convenient.
came here in two days

Cons: its a 15.4 inch screen in a 17 inch chassis, i can barely fit it into my laptop backpack for 15.4 inch laptops.

I wasnt home when the UPS guy came and you need to sign for it, i sadly had to go pick it up from the dispatch place.

it didnt come with a pizza, and i had to pick it up at dinner time

Other Thoughts: Amazing, sturdy well built laptop.

not a con but it does run a little hot.

wish i got it when it was on sale for 1,149$ but its still an amazing deal for 1500$

4 out of 5 eggsvery satisfied

Pros: great: cpu, video card, screen, functionality (the expressgate feature, basically a quick loading linux) direct console for overclocking, not very heavy for the technical specs
good: price, frame, handy little screen that can display things just above the keyboard, little bloat ware to speak of. the 9800m GS's BIOS can be flashed to a 9800m GTS if you're brave.
as stated numerous times below, this laptop can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. it plays Crysis very smoothly.

Cons: the not so good: for starters, its great that this machine has a numpad, but it takes a good deal of getting used to, many of the keys are out of place, and some don't function in game. occasionally while typing, some keypresses are not recognized, however this can be fixed by uninstalling the Synaptics driver - go on the Asus forums to see.
the sound is kind of quiet, but that can also be fixed in the bios, it can become much louder with tweaking.
the battery life is not so good. even at full charge i get around 1.5 to 2 hours in ExpressGate mode, or 1.5 hours in Windows, just browsing the net. but what can you expect ? the dual cpu, video card, and display draw a lot of power.

Other Thoughts: hmm. It shipped pretty quickly. it comes with a recovery disk, a driver disk, a cloth for wiping off finger prints, and a 6-cell battery. 9-cells are available somewhere. many of the problems people complain of in these othr reviews can be repaired by looking at the ASUS tech forums for this model.
before purchasing this, i looked at laptops by Acer, HP, Falcon Northwest, Alienware, Lenovo and a bunch of others. most of them did not have this video card coupled with this display (i don't want 17" display, its just too big.), or the did but were 12 pounds and cost $3000. this really IS the best deal out there.
if you're on the fence on buying this, just do it. its well worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Satisfied

Pros: Video Card
Screen Resolution
Great for Gaming
Fast Processor
Warranty

Cons: The only con I can find is the way the numpad is organized, but nothing major. Wish the hard drive was a little bigger but plenty big enough for most.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is everything I was hoping for. I searched daily for over a year for the perfect laptop within my budget. I looked at this one for about 8 months before finally purchasing, all the time comparing it to other laptops. I wanted a laptop that was fast, had a good hard drive, good video card, fast processor, windows 64-bit, Intel 5100 Wireless, nice screen, 4gb ram. Every other laptop I saw either didn't have all of these things or cost way too much and/or without warranty. I was scared I would get the G50vt and be disappointed afterward but I am extremely satisfied. I can blast through games with awesome graphics, better even than my new gaming desktop. Love Asus and love Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat when it was at $1250.00

Pros: Great Screen Resolution
Good CPU speed
Slick design.
Price was great ($1250 with a $100 MIR)

Cons: Low Battery
Old GPU now

Other Thoughts: When this thing was going for $1250 with a $100 mail in rebate, it was an amazing deal for a superb laptop. I was lucky enough to get in on that offer then. Now it's going for $1500 with no MIR, so it doesn't make sense to buy it. The new Asus G51's are coming out very soon with an upgraded GPU that is faster than the 9800mGS on this bad boy (though the 9800m GS is still great, and the new 260 GPU is more of an incremental upgrade than a revolutionary next step).

3. nice screen

4. very poor battery life ( that does not really matter to me)

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely Reliable Brand

Pros: too many to list

Cons: people won't stop staring

Other Thoughts: The previous reviewer's personal experience with his laptop is irrelevant considering that there have been no studies or general consensus to substantiate his claims.

My 2 year old ASUS G1S-X1 still runs like a champ and I love my 3-week old G50VT-X6.

Even if it had gone busted in a year, there is a 2 year warranty included, and ASUS RMA has a reputation for quick turnaround time. They wouldn't include an industry leading 2-year warranty and 1-year insurance standard if they weren't confident that they wouldn't have to worry about repairing many machines.

2 out of 5 eggsapproach with caution

Pros: Convenient size for extra mobility, smooth glossy display, fast graphics, 7200 rpm hard drive, fast processor

Cons: The same things have happened to me and a handful of friends who went with asus: The laptop works great for about a year, maybe less, then something goes wrong, usually involving excess overheating. BUY WITH CAUTION!!! Be prepared to have to send this baby in somewhere down the line, hopefully your manufacturer's warranty will still be in effect.

Other Thoughts: For $1500, you can get a brand name computer with better specs than this one, and it will last you way longer. I got one for $1300 that has 6 gb ram, an ati radeon hd4650 w/1gb video ram, a core 2 quad 2.0 ghz processor (instead of duo 2.5 ghz), a 17" LED 16:9 display, runs games cooler and has a better battery life. I would not suggest this laptop.
