Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 900 is designed for people who need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Mobile CPU and 1GB of memory run this Linux system with power to spare.

The 8.9" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. The smaller screen lets you easily use it on a plane or train. A 16GB SSD Flash drive has plenty of room for you work and entertainment files and has no moving parts so it saves power.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Affordable Small NETBOOK

Pros: - affordable (about $350)
- lightweight (about 2 lbs)
- good performance for coffee shops, restaurants with wifi, ect.
- quick boot up/shut down
- runs quiet and has lots of room for DIY upgrades (touchscreen, GPS, bluetooth, etc)

Cons: - no atom processor in this model, but for about $350, this is the best deal you can get
- NOT a desktop replacement but anyone looking at a netbook should already know this

Other Thoughts: this is a great netbook if you are realistic with your goals.

YOU WILL BE HAPPY IF
you want a light, affordable netbook that you can grab and bring with you anywhere.

YOU WILL NOT BE HAPPY IF
you are trying to game or use this for desktop replacement. tip: skip XP and run a light version of linux to maximize quickness of this machine. for users who are using xandros, you can enable advanced options with a quick google search and a few clicks.

5 out of 5 eggsDiamon in the rough

Pros: -Quality Build
-Great customization (Easy access to Ram / SSD)
-Works wonderfully with Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 / XFCE / Compiz (3D Desktop)
-Plenty of memory/storage for a netbook running linux
-Very portable and lightweight

Cons: -Battery life 3-3 1/2 hrs for my use (50% screen brighness, wifi, document edit)
-Keyboard is small, but you get used to it fast.
-Xandros, poor choice unless you are a novice user not looking to customize or install a lot of additional software.

Other Thoughts: -Not an Atom CPU but thats ok for me, I don't need 8 hours of battery life.
-16GB SSD may not be the fastest but it's fine for Linux, and I think others make it sound worse than it is.
-Boot time is around 40-45 seconds with Ubuntu Eee
This model has a lot of community support. So installing different Linux distributions is not an issue. Everything worked out-of-the-box on Ubuntu Eee for me. If battery life is an issue, get this model with a larger battery or get an Atom powered netbook.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Smaller then usual laptops, more like the size of a portable dvd player

Cons: SLOW!!!!! ___ i dont mind the processor speed but the ssd was slow on starting up windows xp drains half the battery out on just loading for a straight 2mins and the keyboard is also small to type on im normally used to 5 finger typing but with this keyboard i have to use my index fingers and after a while it does get annoying....

3 out of 5 eggsLight & cheap?

Pros: Light, portable and cheap. Fits neatly into my backpack, hauls easily around campus. Dropped it a couple of times, still works. Also stepped on it. Comes with some useful apps.

Cons: SSD is slow as hell, coupled with xandros which is a watered down version of linux. Kind of buggy as well. Battery life is decent. Kind of tricky to add programs to xandros.

Other Thoughts: Apparently it is simple to reformat to XP with just using a external dvd burner. Don't really feel like paying for one so will probably be usb formatting with eeubuntu.

$349 is pretty good, but if you have the money go for the 1000H, well worth it compared to this.

3 out of 5 eggsProblems with Asus

Pros: Well it is really a small cheap laptop great for wifi and travel.

Cons: Short battery life plus a neutered version of Linux. No, really the way they edited Xandros Linux to make it so user friendly but not good for installing new games or programs was really lame. Xandros on it's own is fine... but had to hire a computer programmer to unlock the real Xandros desktop. Asus has a real problem with how they edited the OS for the Eee PC. I haven't been able to contact them yet.

Other Thoughts: Works great, good buy, had to unlock the real full version of Xandros.

5 out of 5 eggsEee PC is worth every penny!

Pros: Portable...only 2.2 lbs, Linux runs like a champ, Wi-fi set up is a breeze, resources are kept to a minimum (thanks again to Linux) leaving the user with up 3 hrs of computing time.

Cons: ASUS proprietary software doesn't lend itself to a typical environment, but is very good nonetheless.

Other Thoughts: If computing were this easy on a conventional desktop, life would be so much easier. I don't know why anyone would buy this machine, and try to install any version of Windows, particularly Vista. When was the last the other software giant produce an OS that didn't require you to have a ridiculous hardware architecture? 16 GB of storage, 1 GB RAM, an expansion card slot, 3 USB connections, and everything runs flawlessly.
I've read some of the other comments; some valid, some not so. Why would you purchase something this small (9" monitor) and complain about keyboard space? What would you expect?, A full size keyboard? This machine is ideal to run LINUX on it's relatively small hardware profile. If you choose to run "the other guys" stuff, you'll need to purchase a model with more storage to support all the garbage necessary to run safe environment, more RAM, and will cost you more $$.

4 out of 5 eggsVery portable

Pros: Small, light weight, portable, the price is pretty good. the linux os installed on it is pretty good. short learning curve. good companion pc to take along coffee shops or for work to analyze networks.

Cons: didn't mention that it was a celeron processor(still pretty good for the price). keyboard needs some getting use to. the hd is a little bit slow.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. xp install didn't take two hours... only close to one hour. be careful though, kids might see it as a toy.

4 out of 5 eggsRuns Vista 32bit

Pros: It can run Vista! 16gb SSD, SDHC card slot, 3 USB ports 1024X600 Res Screen.

Windows Experience Index: 1.0 (based off of lowest score from below out of 5.9 possible)
Processor - 2.2
Memory - 4.5
Graphics - 1.9
Gaming Graphics - 1.0
Primary hard disk - 4.2

Cons: Keyboard is for finger typing only, mouse buttons are hard to press so I use the tap feature on the touchpad.

Vista lists the processor as a 900MHZ Celeron, but what would you expect for $350. There is some lag with vista, but its what I would expect. Unzipping files is painfully slow.

Other Thoughts: Boot Time about 3-4 min with Vista using all visual effects. 7.54gb free out of 15gb after clean vista install. Single core if your curious. Speaker have a moderate output at 100% and sound clean maxed out.

This would make a great travel companion for email, office applications and internet explorer. Music and video are also possible depending on bitrate and what ever else you are running in the background.

I booted a copy of Vista Business x86 off of a usb CD ROM drive I had laying around and to my surprise it worked. I had to download the wlan and lan drivers for xp from Asus's website and and scan the contents of the folders for a working driver. Only 3 drivers needed to be found after install, and I got all three from Asus's XP versions or windows updates. Installing vista was slow and so was updating it. After that its a nice basic computer.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat on the Go Machine

Pros: GREAT size, Great little machine. I was able to connect an external USB DVD drive to this little machine, and re-partition the drive to install windows XP. If you have a copy of Windows, dont pay the extra $150 for the system with windows. It works like a charm. Pretty responsive, except when installing large applications, and running multiple intensive products.

Cons: While this is not a negative, if you are going to buy this machine be aware that the keyboard takes some getting used to. The 1.3 MP camear is not the greatest but I dont use the camera anyway, about 2 hours of battery life but its what you get.

Other Thoughts: for $350 dollars this is a worthy investment. If are technically knowledgeable you are able to make this thing work for yourself. You can also install the Intel verison of Mac OS X.5 and make this a little mac book. Great machine

5 out of 5 eggsA great step up from the 701

Pros: Perfect size screen for the form factor...a great improvement on the 701. It's also awesome that it comes with 1GB memory and a 16GB SSD...basically this thing dominates most other ultra portables (even the MacBook Air) when it comes to bang for your buck. The default Linux OS is very speedy, and gets the job done well. It looks sexy too.

Cons: Speakers seem a little weak (even for lappy speakers), I really wish it came with Ubuntu (a standard for ease of use the Linux world) pre-installed. However, Ubuntu is easy enough to install for those willing to dig in, and works beautifully.

Other Thoughts: I really, really like this line of hardware from Asus. This particular model is a great option if you're not ready shell out $600+ for an ultra portable, but you still want all the features! Give the original Linux OS a shot, but don't be afraid to load up Ubuntu EEE or one of the other EEE specific Linux derivatives if it doesn't suit your needs. Like I said, Ubuntu on this thing is sweet...all the 3D stuff works pretty well, and a world of free software is available. The original OS is decently faster though.
