Be Warned!
- Pros: Very good video card for the price, beautiful case, got this for 599.99 with MAR, plays all my games at full settings, just played AVATAR in DX10 on everything full settings no glitches or anything. I loved this laptop, but the cons outway my love for it and that is why i sent it back.
- Cons: The first time i turned it on the screen never came on, so i turned it off then back on and then it froze on startup. Tried again and got to the installation and everything, that was good, then it restarted and the screen stayed black again. I read somehwere that if u take out the batter and unplug it and then hold the power button down for 30 secs then the screen will come back on, tried it and it works. Bad thing here is, i installed windows 7 64bit, MSI has absolutely NOTHING to support ANY 64bit operating system, nothing, no utilities, bios, drivers nothing. I had alrdy installed windows 7 before looking, didnt really think to look considering it is kinda silly to not support a 64bit operating system. After this everytime the laptop would sleep or hibernate when it would come abck from sleep the screen would not come back on, so u have to do what i said about the battery and unplugging it to get it to work again. MSI support on the phone or computer is absoultely terrible-------
- Other Thoughts: ran out of room there
the support and customer service doesnt speak english very well, so if you are not used to HEAVY accents then u wont know what they r saying, they also transfer u back and forth from one another and u never get ur questions answered. I really cannot think of anymore cons to put here, i know there are some more, but i just cant remember.. OOO! the panel at the top of the keyboard is LOOSE and MUSHY, the turbo button is a gimick, it does increase ur CPU speed, but that only cuz they clock it down to allow u to safely overclock their hardware.. my eco button didnt work as well, im guessing it was just mine on that..o and after about 5 minutes of use it gets SUPER SUPER hot on the right side... and all that hot shoots out too, but it makes the whole thing hot.. gonna get an ASUS X83VP-X1 instead, cant go wrong with ASUS, took a chance on its Taiwan competitor and MSI failed, no 64bit driver support really did it in for me too along witht he other things..
Awesome while it lasted
- Pros: For the price, this thing is a great deal. It runs most games at mid-high settings, and the turbo button is pretty useful. The aluminum casing smudges easily, but it looks awesome so that's not a huge issue.
- Cons: MSI's customer service is an absolute nightmare. I hadn't owned this thing for more than 3 months when it began acting up. The screen would give me some weird vertical lines on startup, and it wouldn't respond to any commands I gave it. I called MSI and paid $45 to send it to them. I got a call from them about a week later saying that it was working fine when they got it. I was kinda perplexed but happy that they were sending it back. When it arrived, sure enough it was working fine. For about 4 days. Then the lines came back, coupled with a weird whining noise from the rear of the computer. I called them again, said that I wasn't happy at all with their service. The guy said that I should ship it to them again and they would replace the OS, fan, and video card. So I did. It was about 3 weeks there and back. I finally have it again, except now whenever Windows installs its updates, the HDD crashes or something and requires me to run Windows Startup Repair.
- Other Thoughts: This customer service is absolutely ridiculous. I'm a college student. I need this computer for classes. It's been a bit less than two months since I first sent the computer away (2 months which I spent using my roommate's computer for my papers), and the issues still haven't been resolved. I'm going to call them and tell them to either send me a brand new computer or give me my money back.
Over a year and still rockin
- Pros: Excellent graphics for the price. At the time this was one of the best you could get sub-2k. Plays games, movies and autocad without issues. Beautiful case, striking physical features. Push button Turbo does work well, increases processor via oc without instability. I like the number keypad, but it does take getting used to the changes in the keypad. I really feel that this is an awesome laptop for desktop use. Some dislike the keypad layout, but since I use this laptop every day, it makes other laptops weird to use. The heat vent on the right isn't a disadvantage in cold environments, my wife is always cold and loves the fact that her hand is kept warm when she is using the mouse.
- Cons: Battery life is very short, maybe 2 hours on Eco mode, an hour or less with performance. Weird keyboard takes some getting used to, I still haven't mastered the shift key being half the size it should be and miss it once in a great while, it is getting better. I have an occasional problem with the wireless NIC, sometimes it loses signal and doesn't detect. I enter device manager and disable and then reenable and it comes right back up. More of an inconvenience than a con, but thought I would mention it. One final note, the standby led's are really really really bright, I have to cover them to keep them from keeping me awake at night.
- Other Thoughts: Vista update actually lost user profile, had to restore in safe mode and then I figured I should make a back up disk. After that, I would recommend you make a back up BEFORE you have a problem.
I would really like a larger battery for a spare, maybe a car battery because this thing can convert some watts!
