5 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: I have DSL through Verizon. They have their own user and passwd for their modem/router. I bought this to add after that modem/router. I removed stock firmware and flashed it with DD-WRT. Works flawlessly. No notice with signal loss as I can adjust the antenna gain to suit.

Cons: I got nuthin'.

Other Thoughts: I didn't use the stock firmware at all with this, so I cannot attest to that. After the flash to DD-WRT, there are a lot of settings (most are the same). There are more updates to the DD-WRT firmware. I don't like waiting a year or two for the manufacturer to issue an update. If you flash to DD-WRT and use a VPN, you might want a different router with at least 8MB flash space. This has 4MB. Was a little disappointed that I didn't even check that, but I already have all my devices set up with VPN, so it didn't matter.

5 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: This was a great buy for the money! I removed the factory firmware and replaced it with DD-WRT. Works flawlessly.

Cons: I got nuthin'.

Other Thoughts: I have DSL through Verizon. They have a password set for the modem/router they give you. I bought this to add after that router for added security.

2 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: - Price
- Easy Setup

Cons: - Wifi signal randomly shuts off and needs to reboot entire router for it to work again.
- Signal drops dramatically about every 20 ft.
- Bandwidth control only allows about three rules before getting an error message.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Cheap and Simple

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: I bought this and the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND together to replace my old Linksys E1200 which was always giving me problems. I'm in a very old farmhouse with thick walls so the old router barely got a signal out. Cascading this with the smaller one at the front of the house puts out a good solid signal. The E1200's issue was if I switched to Wireless N, every other day the network would drop and not reconnect (WiFi and Ethernet) so I had to stick with B/G and WEP only. Now I can run at full speed. Plus, my media server is ethernet connected so I can drop movie to the server from my main computer much faster with the gigabit ports.

Cons: I had a TP-Link before my Linksys and had no issues at all which is why I decided to go back. The problem I had with these routers were the GUI... they weren't as nice as what my older TPLink had, not as nice looking or user friendly, found myself clicking a lot of tabs to find stuff. As well, the wizard... I ran the wizard 3x and I swear it was different each time. Also, if you upgrade the firmware, it will wipe out all your settings.

Other Thoughts: I've used this for a month so far and so far it's been working perfect. It looks good (though wish it matched the TL-WR1043ND), and the 2 external antenna really put out a good strong signal. I have a few cons, but all fairly minor issues with the router, but since a few I only gave it 4 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit for price

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Worked out of the box, good price, fast new egg shippng

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Have been hardwired forever. ordered this router so we could be more mobil in the house. Tried to setup with disk, that did not work well. Read instructions, Finally just made physical connections, entered the code on each computer and was up and running. Fast, we are on Excde, thought it would slow a bit, but speed is good. Love this purchase, Also fast New Egg shipping.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst router ever

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Extremely easy setup.
great gui.

Cons: favors one device on wireless. This means the first device/computer you connect to this router wirelessly will get perfect internet and performance. However if a second device connects to the wireless you'll be lucky to get 0.2 Mbps from it. Its stupid. I even called tech support and they said this was designed to do that. Why would anyone design a router to limit itself like that? I guess that's why this was only $20. I returned it and bought a Netgear.

Other Thoughts: If you only have one wireless device this router will work fine, but if you have (like me) several, including a TV, 2 phones, and multiple computers, then you will not be happy with this router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router.

We are sorry to see that you've had some issues with this device.

This device can connect many devices to the Internet without having to worry about drops in connection or loss of speed, just like all of our other products.

Usually when we see a scenario where one computer may connect fine, but another computer in the mix causes issue, is when the Modem is plugging into the wrong port of the Router.

If you have any more issues or concerns then feel free to contact us directly.

Best Regards!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great so far, but power brick squealing

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Easy to set up, amazing price, much faster wireless speeds than my older router.

Cons: The included power adapter has an intense high-pitch squeal. I will be replacing it as soon as possible, as the noise just drills into my brain. No issues with the router itself yet.

5 out of 5 eggsFor what I needed to use it for...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: -Easy set up
-Lan to Lan works as expected.
-4.5/5 for config firmware.
-Works as designed.

Cons: -None.

Other Thoughts: Used for quickly adding WiFi to existing LAN. Obviously not super fast, but does what it needs to do (support various WiFi devices like tablets, phones, etc.).

2 out of 5 eggsInternal clock does not work.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Easy-to configure basic router.
Fairly feature rich.
Ostensibly compatible with third-party (e.g. dd-wrt), but built-in features mean it may not be needed.

Cons: Internal clock resets if it loses power, and it will not resync to NIST automatically.

Other Thoughts: The clock reset issue is critical. It means if you power-cycle the router (or have an outage), ALL of your clock-base settings (access rules, firewall settings, bandwidth config, etc.) will be out of sync until you manually log back in to the admin interface and reset.
If you want anything more than a basic, always-on, WPA2-protected wireless router, this router will not meet your needs.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router.

We are sorry to see that you are having some issues with the clock settings.

If you haven't done so already, then I would suggest trying to update the firmware and see if that helps with the setting.

If you are still having issues then please feel free to reach out to us directly for any trouble-shooting and assistance.
