4 out of 5 eggsGood

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: price
ease of use
802.11n speed

Cons: 802.11g speed

Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a Belkin 150n that I had to reset a quarter of the times I want to use it with a Chromecast. So far I have not had to reset this one. The 802.11n speed is better with this tp-link unit (65 mbps wifi, 90-95 mbps wired, on a cable modem with an advertised 105 mbps service download speed and 95 mbps connected directly to the cable modem) compared to the Belkin unit. However, the 802.11g wifi speed is slower with the tp-link (10 Mbps instead of 30 Mbps).

4 out of 5 eggsFor the price its a good router!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Fast up to 300Mb wireless.
Decent options for a cheap router for home use.

Cons: Kinda big for a router nowdays.
Has two big antennas sticking up out of it instead of built in ones.

Other Thoughts: This router can only be placed horizontally or on the wall. Since I, and most other people, wont hang it on the wall it takes up desktop space in the horizontal position. There is no option to vertically stand it.

Further there is two big antennas sticking out the back of it that remind me a lot of the ones I use to see from old wireless G routers. If they were built in antennas it would be much better.

I have had the router about 3 months past a year and it just died. It had been a good router for being so cheap. It was always fast and reliable. It never gave me any trouble in terms of connection or speed.

If you need a cheap router to get the job done then this is a good one to look at in my opinion.

Also, like all routers as soon as you get them make sure you go to the manufacturer site and check for FIRMWARE UPGRADES. They often include fixes for bugs, security, and so on.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Basic Budget Setup

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Easy to get going and onboard software has nice options and layout. Very inexpensive and good enough for my needs for now.

Cons: Range is only so-so for me with 56% on my laptop in the very next room, but no drops or delays so no real issues there. Fixed antennas are fixed so be careful with those, no replacement option. You will need to do a firmware upgrade but no worries there just follow the steps on their site for this.

Other Thoughts: Basic inexpensive wireless router that so far has done well. I like TP-Link products and look for them above most other brands. I would buy this one again for any other upcoming needs.

A note of interest..I didn't get the most current version but the one I got (.8) had a slew of firmware updates posted so I am guessing they fixed the bugs by this point. This model has been around for awhile so I am guessing thats good?

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Works great, a breeze to set up and considerably faster than what I upgraded from.

Cons: The plug emit a horrible, high-pitched squeal that aggravates my tinnitus like mad. Need to see about getting a new plug. The sound is so bad, I had to knock off two eggs.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Wireless Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Cheap Price.

Cons: Drops connection
Slow connection

Other Thoughts: I really really really really really REALLY hate this product. Constantly drops connection or the connection is so slow, I have to restart the router. Even restarting does not help.

Of all routers....this has to be the worst even after looking up updates and trouble shooting.

I am about to throw this router out the window as we speak.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Reliable

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Cheap N300

Cons: Drops connections constantly even though I'm connected directly to it. Also installed latest firmware from their website. As an online MMO gamer I need stable internet which this did not provide. Added 1 egg just because it will get you on the internet if all you do is surf and email for cheap, but look elsewhere if you need something more reliable.

Other Thoughts: Went and bought a NETGEAR WNR2020v2 right after this for a whopping $10 more. Couldn't be happier.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor WiFi performace

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: None (See 'Other Thoughts')

Cons: Slow performance both wired and wireless. Tested in two different environments.

Cannot handle multiple streams coming from 2-3 devices let alone 5-6.

Bad signal in WiFi rich environment(20+) separate signals detected.

Other Thoughts: Not to specs
I own two routers, this one being reviewed AND the TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704150&cm_re=tp-link_wdr3500-_-33-704-150-_-Product

Both units show the same specifications in the manufacturers comparison, minus the 5Ghz channels, WDR3500 having Gigabit Ethernet and "detachable" antenna.

The following tests were performed with both routers:
5Ghz turned off on WDR3500(should be same specs per MFG now for WiFi)
WiFi Channel selection set to Auto
WiFi surfing(searching and viewing) via Laptop on an extremely large database containing data files, video, images and audio files.
Direct line of sight to router under ten feet
Both routers against the wall and antenna directly UP

Test Environment #1
12+ competing WiFi signals in apartment structure.
NetFlix streaming via LAN Cat5 cable

WR841: WiFi speeds were erratic and unacceptable(picture and data intensive)
NetFlix took over a minute to jump from 480P to full 1080 when initiated via LAN.
Adding in additional WiFi stream to phone and Tablet proved to slow Laptop connection drastically.

WDR3500: WiFi very snappy and responsive. Minimal delay or lag perceived.
NetFlix extremely responsive, 480P immediate stream experienced for under 10 seconds and snaps to 1080P with no lag for remaining stream(Via LAN(gigabit)).
Adding in WiFi connection to Phone and Tablet showed no noticeable delay to ANY connection.

Test Environment #2
20+ competing WiFi signals in apartment structure.
NetFlix streaming via WiFi now(LAN connection in last environment, all devices in WiFi mode now))

WR841: WiFi speeds were even more erratic and unacceptable under same tests as above(picture and data intensive).
NetFlix took close to two minutes to jump from 480P to full 1080 when initiated.
Adding in additional WiFi stream to phone, Tablet and additional NetFlix WiFi stream to TV proved to slow ALL connections drastically(more than Environment #1(which was not as WiFi intensive).

WDR3500: WiFi very snappy and responsive. Minimal delay or lag perceived.
NetFlix(WiFi) extremely responsive, 480P immediate stream experienced for under 10-20 seconds and snaps to 1080P with no lag for remaining stream.
Adding in new Phone, Tablet, Laptop and Additional TV(ALL systems WiFi with one wall now separating new TV and New Laptop) proved extremely responsive and only small noticeable delays in signal response(lag) while surfing and watching videos

5 out of 5 eggsworks great, beats NG

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Never any connection issues, never drops, no need to reboot...I can't believe I struggled w/ NG products for so long before giving up on the big name brand. Ugh. This thing has been trouble free since mid 2013. Never needed to restart it (unless the cable went down, ofc). Speed exactly as advertised, range covers a medium sized apt just fine.

Cons: well, it looks a bit cheap, but it *is* cheap and who cares? I can't really think of any cons, except of course that it's older 300mbs instead of fancy new 1200.

Other Thoughts: speed is more than adequate for games, audio. I never watch video so idk how well 300mbs does for that.
I tried quite a few routers from the best known names and was sorely disappointed in them all. This one just plain works, all the time. Yay! I'm using it with a tp-link dual 3db adaptor on the other end, works well together.
