5 out of 5 eggsExcellent firewall

Pros: Easy to use GUI
Easy to set up rules
Seamless setup & management with their wireless products, even in remote buildings!
Realtime network reporting

Cons: maintenance subscription costs can be pricey. depending on what options you want.

Other Thoughts: I've owned sonicwall products for years, and none of them have let me down!

The guy complaining about bandwidth cracks me up! if you're a small/medium business (that this is designed for) and you're using more bandwidth than 775Mbps; you're probably NOT looking at this. If you are, fire your network admin!

Just by showing friends and co workers what the NSA2400 can do, four of them bought sonicwall instead of Juniper & Cisco.

2 out of 5 eggsMisleading

Pros: Good interface, wizards are nice, application control and bandwidth management are clutch. One main function we use is to separate users into groups and allocate specific bandwidth to them. I recommend reading the manual as some things are confusing at first, but pretty straightforward once you understand their logic/phrasing. Bandwidth visualization is very handy, although sometimes hard to read/not fully accurate. Setting up Viewpoint (extra) can help with that.

Cons: Listed throughput. On their website they say the Stateful Throughput (no services running) is 775 Mbps. Fine. Then it lists the throughput with specific services. The lowest being 150 Mbps. We have a 100 Mbps pipe and after looking at the numbers and talking to sales reps, I figured this could handle it. Absolutely not. The maximum this firewall can handle (services or no) is about 40 Mbps.

What happens is that as the bandwidth increases so does the CPU usage. When the CPU maxes out it starts dropping connections. Meaning no one else can use the internet.

Now, if you (by yourself, empty network) do a speed test (which basically downloads an image) you will see proper performance. But, if you are downloading a more complex file the CPU usage jumps much higher and maxes out at about 40 Mbps.

Real world example: If I start 3 downloads from Microsoft (ex: standalone service packs) at the same time I can bring down the network. Never getting above 40 Mbps total.

Other Thoughts: My big beef was that I spoke to MANY sales reps when trying to purchase this device. This wasn't just a simple misunderstanding. After we got the device I worked with THEIR tech support for HOURS trying to figure out why it could only handle 40 Mbps when clearly, according to the stats, it should be able to handle well over that amount.

Of course by the time we had exhausted all tests and the tech happened to confirm with "someone else" that it could only handle about 40 Mbps we could not return the device. We even purchased an NSA 3500 to replace the NSA 2400 and requested some type of help/discount from Sonicwall for wasting nearly $3,000 (after subscription costs), but they've been silent.

So, if nothing else I just wanted to make sure others are purchasing the correct device for their needs. And I recommend the TotalSecure package over the standalone device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device for easy admin

Pros: Easy administration, Active directory integration, L2TP server, separates security features from the rest of the network. Easy adding of remote clients and public servers

Cons: logs need to be tuned so you arent getting emailed logs every few hours. Takes a fair amount of setup before you are up and running. A bit of learning curve since Sonicwall uses some of its own terms so you need to get used to the way they refer to things

Other Thoughts: We had a Pro2040 for 5 years and only had some minor issues with load balancing. This device is faster, more capable and allows me to worry about other IT issues in the company. Ive always been concerned about plugging my WAN connection into a server directly. This makes sure that all my data is inspected before it ever touches my network. great products from Sonicwall!!
