4 out of 5 eggsGigabit ports not functioning

Pros: Easily setup have a RT-N56 that works well thought I would get a RT-N66 also.

Got a replacement for the 1st one in a timely fashion. The second one is working extremely well very pleased with the performance. The wireless reaches well throughout our 4 level backsplit home.

Have now installed Merlin's firmware for some added tweaks on it, so far so good.

Cons: Two gigabit ports not working out of the box.

No cons for the second router I have received.

Other Thoughts: Like the product will just try another one.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgrading my previous review from 7/10/2014

Pros: I have since ordered 4 total refurb units. The first batch had missing materials, cables, or a broken power adapters, but the second batch was perfect manf refurb!

i have found that each time you buy one of these units, and each time you upgrade the ASUS firmware, you must go into the web gui and do a factory reset, and re-enter everything manually... especially if you are having issues. If you do this, they work without a hitch, and no more flaky days!

Of course, some people will complain about wifi dropouts, if so, download wifi analyzer app from android, or some other wifi detector app. Then pick a channel that isn't being used in your neighborhood/facility! Stop using channel 6 in auto mode and you should be fine. I can cover my whole block on an unused channel with a beautiful signal, but i can barely leave my house on channel 6, since everyone in the neighborhood uses it!

I have also converted a couple units to Tomato - Shibby firmware, and they run beautifully! HIGHLY RECOMMEND ASUS!

Cons: Cons have been upgraded from one semi-faulty unit to all 4 units working 100%, due to regular software factory resets.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality Control

Pros: The packaging seemed nice.

Cons: Router was DOA and would not boot.

Other Thoughts: It's obvious that there is no quality control for this product. It took less than 30 seconds to plug the unit in and observe random LEDs flashing while the router refused to boot. This is a test I would expect any recertified product to go through but apparently this test was not performed and now I'm paying the penalty.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsOnly as good as it's weakest link

Pros: Great coverage. Dual band. Fairly intuitive web interface. Outstanding performance.

Cons: Bought this router in March 2013. Yesterday, with no one even near the router it just shut off. After inspecting the cause, the spring loaded power button no longer stays in the ON position. If it is held down, the unit will power on, but shuts off as soon as I let go of the button. Very disappointing for an expensive higher end router to be crippled by the use of a cheap switch.

Other Thoughts: Doing a quick search on the internet, I found lots of others have experienced the same failure in this and other ASUS model routers. I have temporarily used a push pin to wedge and hold the button in the on position. And will begin exploring what new router I should purchase. Unfortunately it will probably not be an ASUS router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Corgi1,

First I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue may have caused you. I understand that you have problem with router's power button it wont stay on. If you want I can create an RMA for your unit so you can send us the unit for repair instead of buying a new router. If you want to continue discussing this issue with me please don't hesitate to email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N150261948 for your reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggswas skeptical of other reviewers

Pros: Bought two. After firmware updates, these units seem to run nice, although one stopped letting me in to the modem to change settings after a few weeks, had to reset. Still waiting on the verdict, one might be a flaky unit after all.

Cons: As other said, these are not refurbished. They were clearly rebagged returns. I bought two units, one had broken and missing wall prongs on the supply, i'm a tech geek, so i know how to solder on some new ones from an old plug, for the price i paid, i didnt care. One was missing ethernet cable, cd, and manual. Again, no biggie, but really, a broken power plug was considered refurbished? If these units were refurbished to manf specs, then asus has seriously poor quality control!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very strong signal, has option of router or access point. This is my second RT-N66U loved the first one I bought another to extend the range of wifi in house. Using the second as a access point.

Cons: No cons

Other Thoughts: The refurbished was not reset by Newegg had all settings from previous owner, easy fix just reset. Also firmware was outdated just updated to newest firmware. And the CFE/bootloader was the old one, had to upgrade the CFE/bootloader. The CFE bootloader upgrade I would only recommend to those with very high tech knowledge. Once all the upgrades were done works like a champ, and saved money.

4 out of 5 eggsReceived DOA

Pros: The RT-N66U is my favorite router, I own 3 of them. Newegg shipped it out the same day. The router arrived in a sealed static bag, all parts were included. It looks brand new. Power cord was coiled up.

Asus firmware was just updated again 3/21/13 More features and 3g/4g support. Merlin, Shibby, and Victek have been tweaking the firmware making these routers very robust.

Cons: I rolled the dice again on a refurbished RT-N66U. Unfortunately The unit has a heat related problem. After 15 to 30 minutes powered on The LAN/WAN ports die. The port LED's go out, and all ethernet connections quit. Turn it off and let it cool, then everything works fine for about another 15 minutes, then quits again.

I guess I didn't learn my lesson. It's $11 to ship it back RMA, and it will be at least a week before the replacement shows up. I should have just bought a new one.

The prior owners config was still in it, just like the last one. Not quite refurbished.

Other Thoughts: To gain access to the router that has prior owners settings and password. Hold down the WPS button while powering up. This will put it back to default settings.

I don't think These units are refurbished Since they come with prior owners config. They probably don't do more than power them up to see if the pretty blue lights come on. The LAN/WAN problem took 15 minutes to show up, so I don't hold
