1 out of 5 eggsTotal trash. Look elsewhere.

Pros: Router is fairly slim. Almost not DOA.. Configuration webpage is certainly a step up from a Linksys WRT54GL's that it was replacing.

Cons: I hoped that the other negative reviews were not true, but this really is slow and unstable! Wireless range (2.4 Ghz) is about the same as WRT54GL, but any sustained transfer greater than a few seconds - even a speed test - will show complete dropouts. Wired connection is noticeably slower for even loading Google. Updated the firmware to whatever was available in late December 2014 but it still sucked.

Didn't test 5Ghz band but really, I didn't need to, I knew this was going back for a refund.

Other Thoughts: Bought it for gigabit routing speeds and 2.4 Ghz wireless N but it was defective.

Newegg was excellent in giving a refund. Picked up a Linksys EA2700 refurbished directly from Cisco and it's been working much better.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Stable, fast, excellent range, Canon IP4700 print fast with utility to check color cartridge status exc. Second USB with ext HD works great. No bugs with firmware. A mature product.

Cons: I am spoiled. I can't upgrade. I hope asus don't bug the firmware

Other Thoughts: I got a couple dozen of router the past almost 20 years. This one is the best.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy set up and navigation. Initial range and use was excellent.

Cons: The problems began when I tried to limit internet access at certain times of the day. Access shut down on schedule, but would not turn on at the scheduled time. After a few weeks, the range and strength fell. The signal strength was cut in half in certain areas. The bandwidth it allowed was at dialup speeds.

Other Thoughts: It was so bad I put my 9 year old router back in service, the problem it was having that caused the replacement are minor by comparison.

5 out of 5 eggsBest wireless router

Pros: Works amazing.

Cons: Little expensive, but well worth it.

Other Thoughts: Maybe it's not expensive compared to other products that do the same thing, but I like it a lot. It was well worth it. You get what you pay for. No problems.

3 out of 5 eggsGood feature list but buggy performance

Pros: Lots of features, gigabit ports

Cons: SLOW printing using the print server. I actually thought it was not working and tried to set it up again the first time I printed. If you don't mind waiting a minute or two for the first page to print, it does work. To me that long wait is a negative, it's a lot easier to just share the printer off a computer or buy a cheap USB print server box that prints much faster.

Range of wireless not any better than an older and less well reviewed Netgear this replaced.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS may have lost a loyal customer...

Pros: Good speed, nice applications, USB ports.

Cons: Failure rate, runs extremely hot, faulty USB ports, terrible range...
Mine lasted only two months. Extremely upset with this purchase, and will never buy another router from ASUS if this is not taken seriously.
We have old, cheap routers with significantly better range than this one, and at the time of purchase, this router was nearly 100$.

Other Thoughts: I used to believe that ASUS had the best technical support and the most durable hardware. After this, I'm losing faith.

3 out of 5 eggsLasted not quite 3 yrs

Pros: Easy setup, fairly user freindly

Cons: purchased in Jan-2012 from Newegg, currently dieing in Dec 2014. Network switch portion is crapping out, have to remove power every few days to reset (cannot access web interface). Removed an egg because as a passive device (no moving parts) there is no reason it should not last much longer than this. device is constantly warm indicating poor design regarding power usage/dissipation.

Other Thoughts: About 6 months ago I began experimenting with blocking internett access to certain IP addresses. Worked the first couple of times but then stopped working. Said it was blocked but was not actually.

1 out of 5 eggsIf you buy this, get the newegg extended warranty.

Pros: It's fast and works, while it does work.

Cons: It only worked for two months and does not do great through walls. I live in a 900 sq foot condo and it doesn't reach well to the back room. It started going out and works sometimes and not others. Even if I power cycle it or reset and set it back up it only works for an hour at most before it is unstable again.

Other Thoughts: I've tried contacting Asus support numerous times over the phone, I even got on here and emailed the tech support person sited on newegg and have had no response. I'd consider that terrible customer support. It is not likely I will ever buy an Asus product again. I did not get the extended warranty because I had some confidence that I could with some diligence get a hold of Asus for consumer support. I was wrong. This review on newegg is my semi-desperate attempt to get them to respond to me.

5 out of 5 eggsMost stable I've had

Pros: When I moved out, I left this router with my parents and I'll be buying the same one for myself.

This router, and I've had many others, has been the most consistent, the more reliable that I've ever had. I especially love the ability to remotely access the settings to troubleshoot although I never needed to. The thing is just a constant amazement.

I cannot comment on the adapter (sold separately) since I didn't require it, but the connection speed with my internal laptop modem (a 4 year old laptop, mind you) was around 70 - 100Mbps and that was enough for lag-less online gaming.

So if you're in the market for a WIFI router and a bit low on cash or want something not as expensive as the newer ones, then you won't be disappointed with the RT-N56U.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Asus rules.

3 out of 5 eggsDied at One Year

Pros: Worked great for a year. Range was pretty good and reached at least 100 feet.

Cons: Like others have said, it died right after warranty expired. It ran hot a lot. Luckily, I have a 12 year old D-link in a box and it still works. It will have to do until I can buy something else...it won't be an Asus.
