2 out of 5 eggs5ghz works ok. 2.4ghz barely works at all

Pros: - Easy to set up, with a pretty good admin interface
- Seems to support fairly high speeds.

Cons: - Range is mediocre with 5ghz.
- 2.4ghz doesn't work unless you are less than a dozen feet from the router. I thought 2.4ghz was supposed to have better range?

Other Thoughts: Asus makes ok products, but I'm tired of trying to work with Asus support. They don't help at all. Web links are broken, they don't understand the problem, their solutions make no sense. This is my last Asus product.

1 out of 5 eggsNo longer supported by OpenWRT

Pros: Good value, if the ASUS firmware works as advertised.

Cons: No longer supported by OpenWRT. Once this model is discontinued, you will have a very short time period to get vendor firmware updates for security bugs etc. No longer term usage and support with alternative open source firmware.

Other Thoughts: - Going from hardware rev v1 to v2, ASUS has changed the hardware (CPU type) in the never ending race to the bottom (their cost savings = profit). This is why I will not purchase ASUS routers, going forward. If they build a device that will be supported for five years I will revisit my decision.
- BTW Newegg put them on sale 1/23/16 and they immediately sold out. So much for an impulse buy.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the ASUS RT-N56U router. Please allow me to assist you.

I understand that you are disappointed with the product. Can we have a detailed information about your inquiry for us to further assist you. For firmarwares, ASUS provide firmwares for it's routers unfortunately we do not support third party firmwares as it can also void the unit's warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for what I use it for.

Pros: Small footprint, height 7 inches by 5 3/4 inches wide.
No dropped connections, so far.

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: I set this router up in about 10 minutes. I didn't bother with the stock firmware. I Immediately installed the latest version of the Padavan firmware ("RT-N56U_3.4.3.9-097_aria.trx"), which I had already downloaded. The flash went smooth and was error-free. The Padavan software looks great and the interface is blazing fast. Any changes to the settings are applied immediately. I'm used to a router taking 30 seconds or more to apply it's settings.

If I can get a couple of years out of this router, I'd be happy. I use it to stream videos to my devices within about 30 feet, over 5G. The videos don't break a sweat and playback is super smooth. Speedtest.net shows my internet speed as about 30 Mbps (megabits per second), which translates into 3.75 Mbps (Megabytes per second).

Right now, the router is very stable.

4 out of 5 eggsRMA once, now working properly and quite fast

Pros: -Fast
-Quite good range
-Easy to setup
-Nice interface, easy to find what you are looking for

Cons: Received a bad unit at first, spent a couple of hours troubleshooting, wifi connection would become randomly incredibly slow and timing out. After additionnal investigation and some talk with the support, went ahead for a RMA.

Knocked an egg off for the rather long RMA process and the fact the sound on their support line was so bad I had to communicate by emails.

Other Thoughts: The second unit I received after the RMA did not have the first mentionned issues. The router is now functionning properly and I do not have complaints anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsReturned after 2 hrs of use.

Pros: The router looks nice, Easy to set up and web interface is easy to navigate.

Cons: 5GHz band speed slows down to 7MBPS after 15 feet line of site on. Upgraded firmware form version 3.0.0.4.376.3754 to version 3.0.0.4.376.3879 did not help. Tried different channels, turned off 2.4GHz frequency did not help either.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router once you ditch the stock firmware.

Pros: Looks Good, great web interface, Great Range. Have owned since Jan. of 2011, I've had my issues at first with stock firmware, similar to the issue everyone else is reporting, changed to aftermarket firmware and this thing has been a beast since.

Cons: Stock Firmware is terrible. I've used aftermarket firmware. Padavan. Google it you'll be glad you did. Turned this potential paperweight into a great and stable router.

Other Thoughts: I literally haven't had to reboot in a few years now because of the router. Padavan firmware has made this router rock solid. I have owned this router now for 5 years. Still using it now. Since changing from stock firmware, it's just been a workhorse.I also bought this model for my parents and they have had it now for 4 years. They are using stock firmware and haven't had an issue, at least I've never had to go down there and resolve any issues with the router. Trust me they'd call me in a sec.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: Great Router that has great range and speed. Looks great. Reliable. Have owned since Jan. Of 2011. So almost 5 years. With aftermarket firmware I've reached crazy levels of reliability. I don't have the heat issues others report.

Cons: Stock Firmware. Is awful. Like a lot.of the reports here had issues with the stock firmware. Firmware, interface is great. Such a shame the firmware is so buggy. Even shelved it for a month or two a few years back. Flashed aftermarket firmware and wow what a difference. Router is super reliable now. It's literally been years since I've had to reboot it.

Other Thoughts: Definitely get aftermarket firmware. Padavan. Google it. You'll be glad you did. Actually got this Router for my parents 4 years ago. It's on a stock firmware that I've updated to in the last 6 months. Their's has been super reliable too. Even on stock firmware. But keep in mind they don't really challenge the router either. I do though. So aftermarket firmware made all the difference.

1 out of 5 eggsNot working, signal goes in and out

Pros: - Nice design

Cons: - A few hours after I installed this, I was getting some serious network connectivity issues. I am no expert, but I'm sure the router must be the cause to my problems. The ipv6 constantly state "no network access" and the ipv4 goes in and out with "internet access"/
-Not sure If I got a defective unit but this one has be very bad after one day of use.
