1 out of 5 eggsUnsatisfied Customer

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: - The specifications appear to be a good value for the retail price (if all works well).
- The emergency firmware 'recovery' feature is very nice to have.

Cons: - WiFi stopped working after one year of product ownership and use (almost exactly to the day). I had been using a Toastman build of Tomato firmware (third party), but also installed the latest version of the official AsusWRT firmware (using the emergency recovery procedure and starting with factory default settings) in which I had the same WiFi problem.
- Asus technical support is non-existent. After two 'technical inquiry' back-and-forth sessions, they have either proven near 0% reading comprehension of the English language, or simply haven't bothered reading the information given to them in the inquiry, and only give back unhelpful canned responses.
- Asus has failed to honor their product warranty.

Other Thoughts: I have no intention of ever purchasing an Asus product again.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for me

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: -Tomato flashable
-Great throughput on wired ports
-approaches 100% uptime.

Cons: -Wifi is so/so. Who cares?! Anything without an RJ45 port isn't meant for a network anyway!

Other Thoughts: -4+ years and I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
-All network components kept on laptop fan pads: highly recommended... and this router powers them no problem through it's USB ports.

5 out of 5 eggsBought another one

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Bought one 4 years ago.and the capacitor finally died. Bought a new one and fixed the old one. This router is a great value. I've used it in several roles, with different firmwares. Now I have 2!

Cons: Capacitor .....after 4 years ....but then that gave me an excuse to get another one.... so its a Pro really because I now have 2,

1 out of 5 eggsSubject to RF interference

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: supports DD- WRT, decent speed and RAM for open source firmware

Cons: Product quality and engineering is garbage, I had 2 of these die within less than a week. They are picking up RF radio interference which kills them. Now I have to struggle to RMA the second one because its past the return period, The stock firmware is also bad and locks up, and annoying to use and freezes every 2 days

Other Thoughts: I've done research online about this model and its seems RF interference, ham radio, etc kills this router because of bad shielding. IF you live near any transmitters or ham radio operators, DONT BUY THIS MODEL!!!!!

Otherwise when it did work it was pretty fast with DD-WRT. The stock firmware is also junk. So if you do buy it, upgrade it to an open source firmware right out of the box!!

Didn't even have it working long enough to even try the USB support so I can't speak to that.

Asus used to have good products, and I used 100s of asus motherboards at work over the years, but lately the last few years there product quality has gone downhill. I don't think I'm buying any ASUS anymore

5 out of 5 eggsGreat inexpensive VPN Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: VPN works great, not out of the box, included firmware was not letting users log into VPN. After trying about 5 firmwares, I found one that worked perfectly.
Great WIFI Range.
VPN can also be used as client, meaning you can have your entire network under another one.

Cons: VPN didn't work out of the box.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not ignore the reviews of failed product, a retrospective review after 4 years

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: DD-WRT flashing is a breeze, unfortunately everything else is a nightmare

Cons: I always thought it was the interference from the neighbors, I had scanned all the channels and ensure that the DD-WRT flashed router was on a free channel. After some underclocking via the radius transmit power, i thought the router was functioning as it should. I had run the router for about 5 years with about the same performance -- it was decent on g/n mixed mode, but only was it after I upgraded I realized how slow this router truly was. Sure shibby/DD-wrt has lots of fun features, but what's the point when you're running at a snail's pace? If you're going to invest this amount of money, look elsewhere.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Yutack,

1 out of 5 eggsDon't use for hosting

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Accepts Open DD-WRT firmware, smooth operation when connection count is low.

Cons: UPDATED 10/6/2015: Constantly seizes up with a high number of connection attempts -- useless for small businesses or people hosting WAN services regularly.

Other Thoughts: Owned one of these in active operation for 19 months using various TomatoUSB/Shibby and Open DD-WRT builds. Tried underclocking (a lot) and running excessive fans to cool it, but turns out to not be a cooling issue and plenty of Google results confirm what I suspected: simply faulty engineering.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Peter,

We're very sorry to know that our product didn't meet your expectations. We will be glad to help you out with any issues you may encounter on our products. I do understand that you're having an issue with the router. To isolate this case, have you tried to update the firmware version and do a factory reset to see if that will help with the issue? If not, can you please try to do it manually upgrading the firmware version. First, download the latest version on this link: http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=RT-N16&p=11&s=2.

If the problem still persists, please email us back so we can proceed with the RMA to fix the router. If this step will not work, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N151037565 in the subject line for your reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 2 years

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Nice interface and updates.

Cons: Like the others, died after 2 years. Cap issue is my guess as it comes on then goes out after 3 seconds. WRT54G lasted for ever and is still at my parents after over 8 years.

Other Thoughts: Can't take the chance on another one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Eric,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you. 2 out of 5 eggsThe flame that burns twice as bright...

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Lots of features. Flashed with tomato. Hosted my printer via the USB port. Ran virtually trouble-free for 2 years as the backbone of my network w/ ~10 devices.

Cons: Died after 2 years. Replaced the bulged capacitor about 6 months ago. Now the power connector is loose and keeps losing connection. I purchased 2 of these, so I was able to use the power supply from the other to confirm the 1st had failed. Neither of the power supplies stay seated in the connector.

Other Thoughts: Disappointed it didn't last longer. My WRT54GL lasted over 7 years of continuous use. It didn't have to endure the video streaming that this Asus did though...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Benjamin,

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Router, though low quality capacitors

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Fast CPU, Lots of Ram, all gigabit ports, custom firmware

Cons: Low quality Capacitor (though easily replaced)

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 of these a little over 2 years ago (one for me, one for my dad, and one for my father in law). All of them died completely due to capacitor failure at pretty much the same time (within a month).

Was an easy fix, however, the fact that all 3 of them died around the same time points to poor quality control. If I had to do it over again, I would buy a similar router from another company to avoid manual repairs.
