1 out of 5 eggsNever buying ASUS again

Pros: Was awesome for 5 months. Great w/ DD-WRT

Cons: Died during 5th month. Password reset itself. Unit indicated that "firmware upgrade failed." Tried to restore original firmware, now I don't even get a useful error.

Other Thoughts: ASUS has the least worthwhile tech support I ever encountered. The number on the router's manual is no longer in service. The people I reached by contacting the number on the site don't support routers. I'm ready to just Office Space the thing and buy another router.

5 out of 5 eggsDependable, Multi-featured, Well Made

Pros: Well made, build quality feels solid, in operation for two- yrs in our 2500 sq ft home and no dropped connections using various generic USB adapters. Moved from WIN XP to WIN7 and no problems. Two-yrs ago when i shopped for my 1st router, I read glowing reviews of this router-dont know what the problem is for folks now but can say Ive had a great experience and would highly recommend this router. The price w/rebate in now half of its original cost! It is extremely easy to set-up w/original ASUS interface. Also, for those who desire 3rd party DDWR-T which is highly configurable (i havent tried yet but will in future) it is even more feature packed. The subtle amber interior lites vs blasting blue on some models. All my connections have 5 bars on this

Cons: None for me.

1 out of 5 eggsIgnore the warranty. Asus doesn't honor it.

Pros: Works well with DD-WRT until it dies.

Cons: Asus product support is a joke. After over an hour of searching their website and not finding any support for routers, I called their phone number and spent hours over a period of several weeks just to get the warranty to replace a bad power adapter. They gave me the run-around, redirected me to other departments. Different representatives told me different things. After hours of this nonsense, I complained to a supervisor who held me on the line for an hour, promising to just send a new adapter to me at their cost, then transferred me to another department, where I was told I'd have to pay for it. I complained to another supervisor who assured me that he would take care of it. A week later, I called to check the status, only to talk to another supervisor who said they wouldn't replace it. After hanging up the phone, I constructed a new power adapter out of spare parts in less than an hour. I should have done that in the first place.

Other Thoughts: Consider this product to be sold "as is" with no warranty. Expect it to die within less than 2 years.

So far, I've purchased 5 routers of this model. The first two died within 2 years. The other three are less than a year old, and one of them has a defunct power supply.

I won't be buying any more products from Asus.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS RMA Sucks - Just throw it away!

Pros: Very nice router, takes DDWRT firmware. Powerful Radio.

Cons: After owning it for 2 months, it has failed and I can not get any help from NewEgg or ASUS. Going on 2 hours now trying to find out how to RMA - Newegg Says go through Asus, and ASUS says Goto the retailer. This Sucks. No place to even complain to ASUS. They are all about their Motherboards, Notebooks and EEEPC's. Obviously they do not care about defective Routers. BUYER BEWARE!!

Other Thoughts: I will probably contact the department of consumer affairs and the B.B.B. about this to see if they can help. Not likely since ASUS is not in this country.

5 out of 5 eggsThis works Great for me!

Pros: Works like a champ! I didn't want to change software even with all the good things I heard about tomato. I just wanted it to work with little or now adjustment by me out of the box ,and it did. I have a outside antenna and the router gives me great range all around my property. Now my wife can use her netbook in the house, yard, or my office which is out behind the garage some 200ft away.
The printer hookup worked great as well. Big plus as I do not have to keep my main computer on all the time.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Because i have a work/home office with 5 computers, some wired and some not, and since Asus has been good to me both with mbs and monitors. I made the leap and like all their stuff hasn't let me down. Now I am not a gamer, but as far as Netflicks download movies, the wireless side works like a champ.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router when paired with Tomato

Pros: As other reviewers have touched on, this router is EXCELLENT with Tomato (see 'other thoughts') or DD-WRT.

I've owned this router for a few months now and have not had a single problem. It blends in fine in my apartment and I dig the orange LEDs on the grey and silver body as a change of pace from other manufacturers' designs.

In my experience, pairing this router with either DD-WRT or Tomato makes it unbeatable. Sure, this router doesn't have a cool status LCD built-in, but if you're looking at this router you may not even want that, much less actually need such a feature. This router just works and works great in that it produces a nice, strong signal and it doesn't get hot or become unstable.

Cons: None, although others are mentioning ASUS's stock firmware as being bad, I have no experience with it seeing as I bought this router specifically for its working with Tomato, so that being said, I loaded Tomato (teddybear mod) on this as soon as I unboxed it.

I suppose the only con is that it doesn't have gigabit, but with my computing being done via wireless, that's not a legitimate concern anyways in my particular situation.

Other Thoughts: if you decide to use Tomato (whether or not you go with Tomato vs. DD-WRT is a personal choice), be sure you get the Teddybear mod of Tomato, which enabled USB printer and filesharing support. if you just use the regular version of Tomato you will not be able to take advantage of the USB ports.

also, it's worth mentioning the USB ports DO put out enough power for a 2.5" drive connected to one of the available ports. This allows you to connect a 1TB drive to your router and as an added bonus you can even run a script that spins down the disk when it's not being used or has been idle for a time interval of your choice. :)

as a forewarning though, USB transfer rates on most any router are very slow, about 2MB/s in my experience with this router. not a total deal-killer though. it's just something all manufacturers need to improve, because based on what I'm reading on different blogs, forums, etc., even the routers specifically marketed as "media-sharing routers" have that problem, t

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router, For Some

Pros: I ran this router for about 6 months with the stock firmware cause I was too lazy to install other firmware. It worked fine up til the end of that time then started having issues with the upload speed while the wireless radio was on. I then installed DD-WRT flawlessly and the issue no longer exists.

DD-WRT (and probably Tomato and OpenWRT as others have mentioned) are a must for this router. The extra features and stability that are gained are well worth the effort to read up on the features and learn how to install it if you aren't tech savvy. The documentation on DD-WRT is very extensive and this particular model is rather easy to install (and easy to revert to the stock ASUS firmware if needed).

Cons: Stock firmware is lacking in stability and consistency. In-Box documentation is quite limited.

Other Thoughts: ASUS should consider preloading the DD-WRT firmware on these things...having an "easy setup" on a modded ASUS DD-WRT would be ideal, so the novices wouldn't have an issue and the experienced would have all they need.
