This router, combined with DD-WRT firmware, has far too many positive aspects to effectively list them all here.

4 out of 5 eggsQuick set up, even with OEM firmware

Pros: For increased security and improved speeds when transferring recordings between 2 Tivo devices, I wanted to upgrade from an old 802.11b Netgear print server to 802.11g. I did not want to lose the ability for network printing. I didn't see many 802.11g print servers out there, but this seem to fit the bill and was a good price.

At this point in my life, I'm more of a "Get it to work now" guy than a tinkerer, so despite reading the other reviews, I figured I wouldn't bother with upgrading the firmware unless I needed to.

Within about 30 minutes, I had replaced the Netgear 802.11b router with the ASUS, confirmed internet connection from 1 desktop and 2 laptops, tested network printing (to Samsung ML-1430) from desktop and 1 laptop, and switched both Tivos over.

With 802.11b, I couldn't stream (low-definition) shows from my upstairs Tivo to my basement Tivo and watch it without giving it several minutes head start. Now that I've switched to 802.11g, this streams fine.

Cons: None so far, but it is too early to speculate about reliability.

Other Thoughts: At some point, I will likely upgrade the firmware so I can attach a hard drive as USB storage, but I didn't need to do this yet. (I have a few old USB hubs sitting around, but they're all USB 1.0. I need to pick up a cheap USB 2.0 hub before trying this.) It sounds like it is pretty easy, but there is no need to do this if you just want to get your network up and going.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware if using for Print Server

Pros: As basic Wireless Router, it works fine.

Cons: All-in-One Printer Server is a joke. Here is the link of the supported printers that will work. If yours does not have green check by. Do not buy this product.
http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/printersupport/WL-520Gu.htm

Other Thoughts: Tried on Win XP 32 bit and Win7 64 bit. I have Lexmark X1100 series printer. Purchase this for the print server funct. , but it does not work w/ my printer. Other firmware (ie Tomato) does not support print funct. either.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks Intermittently

Pros: *Dr. Surf and his badly translated riddle-like, diagnostic help
*Stock antenna is adequate for a normal sized home

Cons: *Stops working arbitrarily, sometimes you can't connect via ethernet, sometimes wireless, but most of the time neither.
*Sometimes you are able to reset it, sometimes you aren't.
*Any change to the modem settings could result in the modem having to be hard-reset back to original settings

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried it with DD-WRT, but will at some point. Others have reported the same issues of having to reset it multiple times/wireless dropping even with DD-WRT.

4 out of 5 eggsVersatile

Pros: As others have said, best bet is to flash tomato USB on it. Makes it an inexpensive and outstanding printer server and/or NAS. I have attached multiple USb devices with no problems whatsoever. Although it has the disadvantage of being only a G router, you can turn this disadvantage into a big PLUS by using it as an access point to sequester G devices from N within your network for better overall performance.

Cons: Wish it were a N router - at this price, of course!

Other Thoughts: Earth-friendly, low power consumption. Perfect for a small apartment.

1 out of 5 eggsReally Just No Fun

Pros: Its nice to have a USB connection for printing.

Cons: Nothing but trouble.. took me a week to setup. Every time I login to change a setting or get my wireless key number it stops working. I have to reset my modem, then router, then workstation several times before it starting working again. Cannot get any speeds over 2mbps on any of my devices. I like ASUS components for my PC.. but I do not think I will try any other electronics after this cluster fest.

Other Thoughts: Just sad...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little wireless router

Pros: Modern appearance.

Cons: Flashed to DDWRT STD.
The network speed drops when it get to hot or after long-time use. Not as reliable as my Linksys WRT54GL.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd 520GU wireless router.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value, alternative to more expensive routers

Pros: Small size, removable antenna, ability to flash DD-WRT

Cons: Stock firmware

Other Thoughts: About the only thing the stock firmware did for me was to quickly auto-refresh when diagnosing WAN connectivity issues. Otherwise wouldn't keep IP address from Charter modem, wireless setup was a bit flaky. Installed newest DD-WRT and it works like a champ, with the added feature of showing EVERYTHING about the WAN connection, and adding hundreds of wireless options under DD-WRT. Great value for the price, and if I ever get a chance to hook one of my cantennas or a ceiling dome antenna I have to it, I'll update a review to include other range issues. As of right now, reliable connections through 3-4 walls to the other side of the house, as well as one floor up.
If wireless N is not a concern, there are plenty of 802.11g models out from several manufacturers that far outperform N models in the same price range. In many cases, if you are not doing file transfers between computers, or connecting to a server on the same network, N proves useless, as it requires N hardware in all clients

4 out of 5 eggsGood with Tomato

Pros: Reliable, good signal, Tomato rocks my socks off.
Can't go wrong with the USB port.

Cons: Junk OEM firmware. Don't even think about buying this without knowing how to change it to DD-WRT or Tomato.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO CHANGE THE FIRMWARE.

The OEM firmware did not even work.

DD-WRT didn't work too well for mine either. I kept having to reinstall the firmware. Tomato is running super clean for about 2 weeks now.

Pros: I have bought 4 of these, and they have been flawless. Fast and reliable. I put tomato in all 4. I have mine running 24/7

Cons: none from all these years.
