1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy One

Pros: Trying to think of one.

Cons: Terribly unreliable, but if you read anything about these you probably already know that. Ports show connectivity but no data passes through them. My company bought three 48-port models and I've had to move 30-40 users back on our old but reliable 3COM 100-base-T models. I'm trying to get the reseller to replace them with something that actually works.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Switch - Constant Lockups

Pros: Almost None. Good price for a 48 port 10/100/1000 switch with 2 SFP uplinks, if it worked all the time.

Cons: Have owned 4 of these units since Nov 09 and have had nothing but problems with the ports locking up. Only way to re-enable dead ports is to power down the switch. This may be acceptable in an 8-5 office environment where you can reboot a switch every night, but not in any kind of datacenter or even dedicated server environment. New IOS released about 6 weeks ago still has same issue.

RMA'ed 2 of the units back to Cisco due to heat related issues and the replacement units are better but still get port lockups. Wish we had never purchased these units, I would have been better off with unmanaged switches, but I needed to support 5 Vlans on each switch

Stay away from this switch and go with a Real Cisco if you can afford it or with an HP ProCurve or 3-Com or anything else.

This is NOT a problem with NEWEGG at all, I have always been happy with NEWEGG.

Other Thoughts: Radius authentication not properly implemented. My Radius server works with both Cisco and HP ProCurve switches but will not authenticate with these units.

No NTP CLIENT??? Time can only be set via the web interface and when you reboot the switch the time is not preserved so you have to go and set it again. Even cheap Linksys routers have an NTP client built in.

1 out of 5 eggsConstant lockups, ports stop working

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Over time, ports start becoming non functional. Unit still will establish a link, but no data will flow on the port, even after rebooting and other trickery. This is with a default configuration, nothing fancy. RMAed unit, new unit started doing the same after a few months. This has happened both to the 24 and 48 port varieties on this family.

Also, has a very loud annoying fan, and the chassis is much bigger than others in the price range.

Other Thoughts: HP budget units are a good alternative. Small, quiet, don't lock up or drop ports.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Switch

Pros: Lots of ports

Cons: Locks up all the time, for client workstations and laptops. Seems to be random. Make all the users mad, including me. Buy Cisco real equipment, and have no worries again.

Other Thoughts: Ran real cisco equipment for years, and never had any problems with the swiches, firewalls or routers. Cost you more, but well worth the 100% uptime, 5 years without problems. Cisco made a bad choice to buy linksys and rebrand it cisco....I feel it tarnishes there name.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Does come with a default IP so you may need to hook it up to a console first in order to change it.

Pros: Very easy integration, the cost for this 48 port 10/100/1000 switch is very good compared to some others. Easy to use web-interface.

Cons: None so far, everything has been running proper for 3 weeks now with no issues.

Other Thoughts: You may want to configure the IP address of this unit before plugging it into the rest of your network. By default it is 192.168.1.254. Just some food for thought when implementing this unit.
