5 out of 5 eggsOldie but a Goodie

Pros: These may be an older model, but in my opinion it is still one of the best for commercial applications where speed is not of the utmost importance. This client was looking for a cheap way to implement a wireless network for two non-mission critical PCs and the employees phones.

The pricepoint and stability of this router makes it an excellent choice for these applications. I was able to get two of these for less than the price of a decent AC router and create a WAN that is scalable and sturdy.

Also completely supports DDWRT which is a much more powerful firmware than the stock Linksys.

I highly recommend this router to anyone looking for a good b/g router

Cons: Does not offer wireless bridging. Knew that going into it so I'm not taking off an egg. But if you need that function can still get this and then install DDWRT.

Other Thoughts: Purchased these to install in a customers business which is in a commercial building (concrete walls, raised roof).

1 out of 5 eggsHard to Set up

Pros: seems to broadcast a strong signal....

Cons: Could not get Internet through the router, tried bridging the modem but no luck, shows it can get to internet just the computers connected can't....

Other Thoughts: cost 10.50 to ship back.... nahh ima just throw it in a box till I can give it to somebody needing router w/o internet passthrough, better than no router i guess.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a pile of

Pros: It arrived on time.

Cons: It will not work with my Vista PC. Prior to buying, I checked and it is listed as Vista compatible. I called Linksys and spent 3 hours on the phone. The last thing they wanted to do was for me to update the software on my wireless device - Atheros. They said to do that then call back. I updated the driver and called back. Then I was told that the router is "out of date" and the only thing they could do was to transfer me to some support group but I WOULD NEED TO PAY FOR THE SUPPORT.

Other Thoughts: I am not to happy the Newegg is selling devices that are so old that the manufacturer will not support the device.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure to launch

Pros: Looks pretty.

Cons: Our old router was having issues dropping signal. Got out the linksys router, and installed exactly according to the CD guide. Took 6 tries to configure the router. Once done, nothing. No internet, no gaming, absolutely nothing worked. Tried several more times, before giving up, and reinstalling the old router. At least it functions. No to mention the antennae wobbled and did not stand up at all on the right side.

Other Thoughts: I had high hopes for this router to serve my needs based on the reviews. Yet, when I tried to actually use the router, it was completely broken. It makes me pretty angry I spent good money on a router that fails in every regard.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Enough

Pros: Nothing really special to note. You get what you paid for - a no hassle router that is easy to get running. DD-WRT firmware can be installed but I messed it up last time by installing the standard FW first instead of the small one, bricking my last router. Funny how you only find out the right order to install firmware only after you've already bricked it.

Cons: The instruction CD that came with it seems like it was made 15 years ago and no one bothered to update it (Windows ME/98??).

Other Thoughts: The package was delivered by On-Trac. First time I've heard of them. I was sitting in the living room when the delivery guy arrived. I watched as he drove past my driveway, busted a U-turn, pull up to the sidewalk, reverse til he was blocking my driveway, then chilled in his car for about 2 minutes. He eventually carried my package to my porch, but he didn't just lay it down gently and knocked on the door to notify. No, no. He shoved the box to the ground like he was passing a ball in the NBA and promptly walked away. If I had a choice, I wouldn't pick these guys for any kind of delivery again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat but almost obsolete

Pros: Great reliability. I never had to restart it. It's never crashed since I got it in 2009. Runs most custom firmware, but only the smaller sizes though because it doesn't have as much RAM as newer models. Great g wifi performance and coverage.

Cons: The hardware is getting too dated if you have 50 Mbps internet or faster. First, g wifi will net you between 20-30 Mbps under ideal conditions. Second, the CPU is too weak to handle downloads (over wired LAN) above 38 Mbps. Granted I'm running a modded tomato firmware, but I had to overclock the CPU to 250 MHz (from the standard 200 MHz) in order to get over 50 Mbps downloads. ***You might get better or worse performance with different firmware.

Other Thoughts: It's a great unit if you like to customize it and don't have internet service over 40 Mbps (unless you overclock the CPU). It easily stream 40+ Mbps Blu-ray movies across my home network with hardly any CPU utilization... but downloading that much from the internet is different and really taxes the CPU.

1 out of 5 eggsEnd of Trust

Pros: Affordable

Cons: I have loved these routers for many years, for their sturdy, affordable, open-source reliability, and am saddened by what seems to be a trend. Three of the four WRT 54 Linksys routers i have bought since last summer have died.

They've worked too long for a return, although maybe there's a manufacturer's warranty.

I still use one of these for a primary router, and it's working, but I won't be gambling on them any longer.

Other Thoughts: I do wish there were an easier way to contact manufacturers via Newegg. Our business does a high volume of business here, but trying to contact someone at Newegg for support is always a frustration.

The RMA process (for items less than 30 days old) seems to work great though.
