Microsoft's latest OS, Windows 8, includes updates to some Windows 7 features that may allow for more intuitive use. The software was designed with interfaces for computers and tablets, but both devices can support either menu.

The tiled start-screen is modeled after the Live Tile system that Microsoft uses for Windows Phone. These icons are animated shortcuts that provide live updates for each program. For example, if you link your email account with Outlook, you'll receive an on-screen notification for every new message.

Windows 8, aside from its lack of a start button, has an alternate interface with certain similarities to Windows 7. The familiar program bar and desktop are there and can be easily accessed by left-clicking on the tiled screen. After viewing both menus once, pressing the Windows key toggles between the two.

There are different versions of the OS with different tools and were designed with different system needs in mind. Windows 8 is the basic upgrade from 7, Vista and XP with the new screen, integrated accounts and access to the Windows Store for apps.

Windows 8 Pro is Window 7 Professional's successor and offers increased security via programs like Encrypting File System and BitLocker. This iteration of the OS was designed with heavier use in mind. For businesses, Windows 8 Enterprise offers all of the programs found in other versions, except for Windows Media Center and pre-installed Microsoft Office Suites. Enterprise also has Windows To Go, which saves all of a user's files and preferences to a USB drive so they can access their customized OS from any computer.

Anyone whose laptop or desktop runs on Windows XP, Vista or 7 is eligible to upgrade to 8. Systems require processor speeds of 1 GHz or faster, 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM for a 32-bit device, 16 GB of disk space and a DirectX 9 graphics card to support the OS.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 is just fine guys, calm down.

Pros: -Windows 8 isn't too different from 7
-I like the start panel

Cons: -Not much of an improvement over windows 7.
-Start panel could be better, more customizable.

Other Thoughts: Instead of a start menu we have a start panel, which is actually pretty cool. I've had no problems with games running. Things navigate just like windows 7, except instead of going to the start menu to get to my computer, you hit the explorer button. All the windows 8 hate is silly to me.

1 out of 5 eggsWIn 8 - soon to be the best seller

Pros: None that I know of

Cons: If you have a tablet it might be good, but for someone who wants to do work on a real desktop or laptop computer, it is even less intuitive than win7, and I took it off as soon as I could get a win 7, which made a good deal computer no longer a good deal.

Other Thoughts: Despite the drop in sales of computers due to this reskined messed up rehash of the microsoft windows line, it will be a good seller some day, only because too many companies only do microsoft and microsoft has too much money invested to admit to a mistake and go back to something useful. Heck, even *gag* vista was better than this.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a fan

Pros: Loads and shuts down faster due to new hibernation. Seems a little faster on basic windows applications.

Cons: Metro is too basic. You can't tag or rename audio files in modern. Latency issues are pretty bad. I use a laptop every night with Turntables. The network spikes, the spiking cpu from latency problems makes this very troublesome. I lose control of mouse, plus the audio speeds up and crashes, are nightly issues. Too basic, even in desktop mode, when I'm using a loop editor, the swipe gestures load another screen. I had to go in registry, and run classic shell. No viruses, and all updated, I have too many issues, and can't disable Metro to even see if its causing problems.

Wifi shuts off at least 4 times a night. When running four audio channels, the issues get much worse, then the audio stops in one channel.
There are several times, when I can't add a song, I lose total control and it crashes. I have the exact setup on my older Sony with Windows 7, and do not have these issues.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 hinders my creativity by failing what it is supposed to do. Getting music on beat, the latency issue slows performance. Adding a loop freshly created, many times Windows will not let me access it.

The computer was sent in checked and had no issues. In the meantime, my older laptop with windows 7 is much more stable, and more conducive for what I need.

4 out of 5 eggsWindows Excellence

Pros: Sleek and compact, installs in minutes!
New layout easily interchangeable to traditional desktop
High customization rating!

Cons: Steep learning curve, very different feel
Sometimes TOO user friendly
Tiled desktop can sometimes be too simplistic for a desktop

Other Thoughts: I really like the look and feel of Windows. Re-learning the operating system was somewhat exciting for me, I enjoyed the challenge. Overall, the compactness of Windows 8 is something to enjoy for a long time

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8

Pros: It came installed on the lap top I purchased.

Cons: This system might work great with anything with a touch screen but whenever your mouse hits the edge of the screen, a window pops up. Need another program? You have to go back to the main page and scroll through aps.

Another major issues is everything you need or want needs to go through the Microsoft store, similar to programs you want for your phone. In addition everything wants to share your location and settings. Spend enough time shutting these off on my phone, don't need to do it with my laptop.
Looking to purchase a Windows 7 version for accessibility issues.

Other Thoughts: Would encourage computer manufacturers to offer the choice of Windows 7 or 8 to new owners because the difference in the Windows version could effect the sale. Having used it, I would never buy something with it pre-installed.

For those of you who remember this is just like "New Coke" hope Microsoft takes this off the market and quickly.

5 out of 5 eggsA happy gamer

Pros: Please see the quality of my build before reading, this is why I would argue the performance is so high for me. My rig I think would qualify as MEDIUM-high for a consumer grade.

Installation
It took roughly 20 minutes to install after plugging the PC together.

Devices:
I plugged everything in at once, except a HDD, then powered up installed the OS and BOOM - I had a working computer.

One device, an HDD gave me a problem. I had to partition it so that it didn't show as 350mb (its 1.5tb). This was simply done in Disk manager and I have had no further issues.

Windows recognized everything else I have: Wiresless g930 headset (still needed software from logitech) my mouse, keyboard, both monitors..etc. And set it up for me with no problems on its end.

Performance:
I can reboot it and have it back up and running in no more than 25 seconds (usually closer to 15 seconds). I can easy flip from metro to desktop to programs quickly and seamless lessly. It feels great.

GAMES GAMES GAMES!
I have now played Arma 2: OA (day z origins). I had it installed and up and running on the highest settings with absolutely no problems. I was actually amazed by this. My Frame rate, I would guess, feels about 20-30% better.

I opened and played SC:2 HOTS...its sc and unless I play some custom games its easy to max out.

Overall: I love this OS.

~~~~~~
Win-8
-Asus Sata DVD
-EVGA gtx 660 2gb
-XFX p1-650 PSU
-ASROCK Z77 extreme 4
-G-skill sniper series *gb (2x4gb)
-Western Digital Cavier Green 1.5tb
-Intel Core i5-3570 Ivy Bridge (3.4ghz)
-Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB
Cons: It takes about 1 hour of deliberate attention and concentration to get the hang of things. Its a bit odd at first going for the start button and it not being there but instead replaced with the "metro" screen.
One little annoying point: If you have 2+ screens the upper right hand "action bar" or whatever its called which brings up some important menue options can be mildly finicky. But I am almost used to it.
Other Thoughts: When Leap Motion comes out and regular monitors become touch screen for 79$ this operating system will be set to be even more fantastic. As it stands now the OS is "Windows 7 +". I was scared to switch but now that I have I am soooo glad Microsoft put this out now.
4 out of 5 eggsPretty cool!
Pros: Many concepts redesigned to make learning and workflow easier. Organization is better, the look of the UI is good (but you really need to play around with backgrounds and colors that make it look good...)
You have the option of what you would like to run as an "app" or in a window. So when I am with friends and want to throw on movies, music, or games, everything is nice and neat for me to access easily.
It is also a step closer to easily switching between working on a tablet, phone, and desktop. Each have their strong points.
Cons: Some of the redesign is counter-productive and requires more clicking.
Compatibility and drivers issues. Any decently outdated equipment might have some issues... I figured this might happen.
Right now the store is pretty terrible.
Not worth the money or trouble updating yet.
Other Thoughts: Yes, the start menu is gone (honestly not that big of a deal, its just full screen and you can click right back to the desktop, or use the "windows key"). But it is only a problem when using an app, and returning to the desktop (ugh) UNLESS you have dual monitors, which allows me to click off of it like a normal start menu...
Overall, not worth the time and money to adjust to the new OS and upgrade unless you want to get ahead of the game.
5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8, is pretty neat.
Pros: Installed on latest build for the girl friend. She loves it.
Cons: None, just have to learn the new system.
Other Thoughts: Still debating if I want to upgrade from win7 pro...
haha.
