Pentax redefines the entry-level DSLR category with the K-x. This new model combines solid photographic performance with a wide array of advanced features, including Live View function and high-quality movie recording, extending high-quality digital SLR photography to all users. Its compact, lightweight body also enhances portability and maneuverability, making it ideal for many different photographic occasions.
The K-x design is based on the Pentax K-m, an entry-class digital SLR camera launched in October 2008 that early on gained popularity for its compact, lightweight body and simple, user-friendly operations. With the addition of a newly designed CMOS image sensor and an upgraded high-performance imaging engine, the K-x offers outstanding photographic performance at nearly the same level as upper-class models. This includes high-resolution, fine-detailed images delivered by approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, super-high-sensitivity photography and high-speed continuous shooting.
The K-x also features an array of advanced functions, including Live View shooting and movie recording. It also provides a pair of handy functions designed to produce highly personalized images with great ease: an upgraded digital filter function to accommodate more sophisticated image processing, and a new cross process mode to produce unexpected, eye-catching finishing touches with unique, intriguing colors. The K-x is not only the perfect camera for first-time digital SLR camera users, but also serves as the ideal backup camera for more experienced photographers.
High-quality Image Reproduction With approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, the redesigned CMOS sensor faithfully and accurately reproduces true-to-life images with fine detail and rich color depth.
New PRIME II Image processing engine Fast 4.7 frame-per-second shooting with the powerful PRIME II Image processing engine! The new image engine features fast circuitry and low noise image processing, offering greater data-processing speed and produces better-quality images with richer gradation and more accurate color rendition. It also offers high-speed movie data transmission.
Compact, Lightweight Body One of the smallest DSLRs in its class, the Pentax K-x compact, lightweight body allows for one-handed operation and comfort when traveling.
Shake Reduction Technology With sensor-shift Shake Reduction, the Pentax K-x produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions such as telephoto lens photography, shooting in dark or low-light setting without a flash illumination, and sunset scenes.
Live View Capable 2.7-inch LCD and High-precision Viewfinder Photo composition and image viewing at more extreme angles has become easier with the large, 2.7-inch LCD monitor that offers a wide viewing angle and live view capabilities. In addition, the Pentax K-x pentaprism viewfinder offers a 96% field of view and 0.85X magnification, providing a handy alternative in bright lighting or low power conditions.
Twin Lens Kit The included smc PENTAX-DAL 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED L lenses provide a useful focal length coverage from 27mm wide-angle to 306mm telephoto (35mm film camera equivalent) for professional performance.
Pros: Loaded with in-built features that reduces the need to redo pictures using an image editor Super price compared to competitive products Though plasticky in material, the build quality is very good and far better than the popular canon T1i/T2i Sensor is the same a D90/D5000 Nikon, so it is able to take great indoor photos under low light In-body image stabilization means you can use even old manual lenses and get stabilization Ability to use old Pentax or other K-mount manual lenses Live view for videos and finer focusing Lightweight and easy to handle AA batteries means you don't need to worry about battery charging, as you can pop any alkaline or lithium if you run dry Sanyo envelops rechargeables allows over 400-500 shots HD video is pretty good and useful
Cons: In-body stabilization effectiveness more like 2-stops than the 4-stops advertised by Pentax Built-in dust cleaning mechanism not as effective as Olympus or Nikon Lack of focus indicators on the viewfinder sometimes a problem when focusing under low light Auto focusing unit not as advanced or capable as the Nikon though a match for canon Battery indicator is quirky, and tends to show the incorrect status for recharge-ables (you need to switch the device off and back on to get the correct status) Video mic is very sensitive and poorly located (tends to pic the camera noise more than the background noise)
Other Thoughts: 18-55mm kit lens is very good for a kit lens. However the 50-200mm is rather soft and a MUST avoid, and the 50-300mm is the option to go for (the lens is supposed to very good). The camera will also be benefited being paired with a fast zoom lens, since it can come out with some great high ISO shots.

Rating: 4/5Great price, Great camera
Pros: - Affordable - Low light peformance - Feels great in my hands - Crisp, accurate shots indicate quality glass - Fast performance - Live view is a great touch - In-body autofocus works as advertised- Very well. - Large lens catalogue - Programmable "green button" is a nice touch - In-camera editing is well implemented and actually useful - HDR images come out lush and full - Sony image sensor is big and IMO pushes the camera a bit past it's "entry-level" tag - Excellent HD video
Cons: - Plastic lens construction: Good and bad; light to carry, not as sturdy feeling - No selectable focus point via viewfinder - use live view instead
Other Thoughts: Neither of the cons are detrimental to the overall use of this camera, but I suppose the warrant it not receiving the "five egg" treatment. For the price, I'm not sure you'll find a better "entry-level" dslr. The K-x has many features of an upper range camera, at an entry-level price. I'm very pleased with the camera.

Rating: 5/5Pantax K-x
Pros: Great Camera, easy to use, easy to learn from. Newegg got it to me on the day they said they would, no issues at all. I looked all over looking for a DSLR camera and Newegg had the Best price for a dual set. Couldn't find a better price anywhere.
Cons: None what so ever.

Rating: 2/5NIce but AF failed
Pros: Great price and full featured.
Cons: Auto Focus quit working in 3 months
Other Thoughts: After a lot of research I went with the K-x because I got two lens and great reviews on high ISO and low light performance. In three months I probably used the K-x for about 3 hours and I noticed that the last photos I took were totally out of focus. I looked at the camera that the Manual Focus was on, problem is that I now can not enable Auto Focus even after 45 minutes with tech support. So now I have send the Camera to AZ for repair, It should take 3-4 WEEKS! perfect should be back just in time for my July Vacation. I guess it is back to my Canon XS1.

Rating: 5/5PENTAX K-X IS A NEW CLASSIC!
Pros: - Ability to take high quality photos in very low light - Good quality kit lenses (heavy plastic housing, same glass as higher-end Pentax lenses - Very light weight - Compact, great balance, and fits well even in large hands - Works with every Pentax lens ever made (M4 & 645 mounts require adapters with manual focus) - Fast focus speeds, even in low light (finally, Pentax did it) - Almost all the features of the K7, at just over half the cost - Battery drain issue *HAS BEEN COMPLETELY FIXED* with latest ROM upgrade - Live View mode works excellent for taking MACRO photography - Seasoned photo buffs will love this camera - all the settings are there (AV, SV, TV, PROGRAM, etc.) - Point-and-Shooters will love this camera - put it on PROGRAM and give it to the wife with confidence she'll take great shots - 12 MP JPG, 12 MP RAW, OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME - Up to 1/6000 shutter speed, 12,800 ISO - Works with any P-TTL dedicated flash unit - 17 pic JPG HI burst mode / 11 pic RA
Cons: Not a biggie, but there is not an indicator in the viewfinder that autofocus has been reached. Simply listen for the autofocus beep and snap the shot.
Also, even though the K-X DOES have the ability to choose out of 11 possible focal points, when selecting a specific one, it must be done on the LCD screen, and not the viewfinder
Other Thoughts: This camera has very few limitations, and will provide anyone with years of pleasurable photography. It is a camera you can grow with, and it's popularity in Asia and Europe is incredible. Even though it is not an all-weather camera like the K10, K20, or K7, the build is of great quality and will hold up for years. Photo quality is superb. I've been shooting Pentax for 35 years and this one is destined to be a new classic.

Rating: 5/5Moved up to DSLR
Pros: 1. Price 2. Good transition from old Pentax user 3. Size and feel 4. Works well with old lenses 5. Great Images 6. Great Features
Cons: 1. Need to upgrade firmware 2. Some functions can lead to missed shots - Mainly operator error on my part, but could be more fool proof. 3. Could use the 3" LCD like the Canon TTi 4. Delete button and flash up button conflict when using preview functions.
Other Thoughts: I did hours of research and read in detail reviews of all the DSLR's with similar features. It is somewhat overwhelming once you start, and are a first time DSLR buyer. Back in the 1980's I used Pentax SLR (MV and K1000) and had two old lenses and some others in the family. The Nikon D5000, and Canon TTi both really appealed to me, but having been an old Pentax user I had to consider my old lenses, which had been gathering dust. Once I actually held all three the Pentax and Nikon felt best. In the end the old lenses and price advantage won out along with the image quality I had been reading about, and ordered the Kx. I am very happy with the choice and both the old lenses work great over the first week of use. The images are outstanding, and I find it fairly easy to use so far. I am having a blast so far and think you will too should you decide on this camera.

Pros: My first dSLR - was worried about the learning curve, but has been fairly easy to pick up on the basics. In-camera filters are nice (HDR, toy camera, etc). Takes 720 HD video. LiveView is pretty handy. Use of AA batteries is handy - spare batteries easy to find. Coming from point-and-shoots, the pictures are amazing! Excellent high ISO noise, most of my pictures are taken in low-light conditions, and the pictures turn out nicely.
Cons: Default RAW format is PEF, which can't be opened with versions of Photoshop older than CS4. (DNG is the other format available in-camera, and opened fine with CS3). Miss the tilt/swivel screen on my point-and-shoot.
Other Thoughts: It was a choice between this, Canon EOS 500D, and Nikon D5000. The features (to me), and price were an excellent combination.

Rating: 5/5My first DSLR, awesome camera!
Pros: 1) Price is great. Some of the features like Video is only available in higher end models for other cameras. 2) Uses regular AA batteries, even comes with free lithium AA batteries, I am at 300 shots and still going strong. No need to buy special batteries. 3) Light and compact size. But not too compact that will affect holding the camera. 4) Easy to use. I didn't read the manual all that much, just picked it up and started fiddling and was shooting in about 5 minutes. I was concerned that it's not as easy to use as the well known brands like Canon and Nikon but the Auto Pict and the scene modes make things super easy to take great pictures. 5) Most important, takes great pictures! The pictures are virtually indentical to well known brands like Nikon and Canon. 6) High ISO allowing you to take great night shots 7) 4.7 frames a second shooting, takes pictures so darn fast, I am totally amazed! 8) Camera feels high quality and seems to be built well to last years.
Cons: I like the white color body but it did not have the 2 lens bundle so I had to get a more normal looking black body pentax. Not really a cons, Live View is slow, but if you read the reviews, its slow for most DSLR systems as well. Use the viewfinder. I found that coming from a point-and-shoot background who is used to using the LCD, the switch to adjusting and using the viewfinder was no problem at all. dpreview.com says there are no focus points in the viewfinder, but if you are a beginner, you won't need them, the viewfinder does include framing that shows you where the focus is at, approximately, so this is more than adequate for me.
Other Thoughts: Read the review in dpreview.com so I did my homework. Compared Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus and Pentax DSLRs. At this time, this camera is the best bargain with the most features compared to well known brands like Canon and Nikon. My wife who is not very technical, picks it up and now uses the camera like a pro. She loves the camera! I am very satisfied with this camera and Newegg as usual ships fast. You can't go wrong with the camera. I am already getting incredible shots which I could never do with a point-and-shoot. Also the camera is compatible with all Pentax lens, unlike the Nikon D40 which is only compatible with its own family of limited lenses.
