My first DSLR, awesome camera!
- Pros: 1) Price is great. Some of the features like Video is only available in higher end models for other cameras.
2) Uses regular AA batteries, even comes with free lithium AA batteries, I am at 300 shots and still going strong. No need to buy special batteries. 3) Light and compact size. But not too compact that will affect holding the camera. 4) Easy to use. I didn't read the manual all that much, just picked it up and started fiddling and was shooting in about 5 minutes. I was concerned that it's not as easy to use as the well known brands like Canon and Nikon but the Auto Pict and the scene modes make things super easy to take great pictures. 5) Most important, takes great pictures! The pictures are virtually indentical to well known brands like Nikon and Canon. 6) High ISO allowing you to take great night shots 7) 4.7 frames a second shooting, takes pictures so darn fast, I am totally amazed! 8) Camera feels high quality and seems to be built well to last years.
- Cons: I like the white color body but it did not have the 2 lens bundle so I had to get a more normal looking black body pentax. Not really a cons, Live View is slow, but if you read the reviews, its slow for most DSLR systems as well. Use the viewfinder. I found that coming from a point-and-shoot background who is used to using the LCD, the switch to adjusting and using the viewfinder was no problem at all. dpreview.com says there are no focus points in the viewfinder, but if you are a beginner, you won't need them, the viewfinder does include framing that shows you where the focus is at, approximately, so this is more than adequate for me.
- Other Thoughts: Read the review in dpreview.com so I did my homework. Compared Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus and Pentax DSLRs. At this time, this camera is the best bargain with the most features compared to well known brands like Canon and Nikon. My wife who is not very technical, picks it up and now uses the camera like a pro. She loves the camera! I am very satisfied with this camera and Newegg as usual ships fast. You can't go wrong with the camera. I am already getting incredible shots which I could never do with a point-and-shoot. Also the camera is compatible with all Pentax lens, unlike the Nikon D40 which is only compatible with its own family of limited lenses.
Moved up to DSLR
- Pros: 1. Price
2. Good transition from old Pentax user 3. Size and feel 4. Works well with old lenses 5. Great Images 6. Great Features
- Cons: 1. Need to upgrade firmware
2. Some functions can lead to missed shots - Mainly operator error on my part, but could be more fool proof. 3. Could use the 3" LCD like the Canon TTi 4. Delete button and flash up button conflict when using preview functions.
- Other Thoughts: I did hours of research and read in detail reviews of all the DSLR's with similar features. It is somewhat overwhelming once you start, and are a first time DSLR buyer. Back in the 1980's I used Pentax SLR (MV and K1000) and had two old lenses and some others in the family. The Nikon D5000, and Canon TTi both really appealed to me, but having been an old Pentax user I had to consider my old lenses, which had been gathering dust. Once I actually held all three the Pentax and Nikon felt best. In the end the old lenses and price advantage won out along with the image quality I had been reading about, and ordered the Kx.
I am very happy with the choice and both the old lenses work great over the first week of use. The images are outstanding, and I find it fairly easy to use so far. I am having a blast so far and think you will too should you decide on this camera.

- Pros: My first dSLR - was worried about the learning curve, but has been fairly easy to pick up on the basics. In-camera filters are nice (HDR, toy camera, etc). Takes 720 HD video. LiveView is pretty handy. Use of AA batteries is handy - spare batteries easy to find. Coming from point-and-shoots, the pictures are amazing! Excellent high ISO noise, most of my pictures are taken in low-light conditions, and the pictures turn out nicely.
- Cons: Default RAW format is PEF, which can't be opened with versions of Photoshop older than CS4. (DNG is the other format available in-camera, and opened fine with CS3). Miss the tilt/swivel screen on my point-and-shoot.
- Other Thoughts: It was a choice between this, Canon EOS 500D, and Nikon D5000. The features (to me), and price were an excellent combination.
