Pentax redefines the entry-level DSLR category with the K-x. This new model combines solid photographic performance with a wide array of advanced features, including Live View function and high-quality movie recording, extending high-quality digital SLR photography to all users. Its compact, lightweight body also enhances portability and maneuverability, making it ideal for many different photographic occasions.
The K-x design is based on the Pentax K-m, an entry-class digital SLR camera launched in October 2008 that early on gained popularity for its compact, lightweight body and simple, user-friendly operations. With the addition of a newly designed CMOS image sensor and an upgraded high-performance imaging engine, the K-x offers outstanding photographic performance at nearly the same level as upper-class models. This includes high-resolution, fine-detailed images delivered by approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, super-high-sensitivity photography and high-speed continuous shooting.
The K-x also features an array of advanced functions, including Live View shooting and movie recording. It also provides a pair of handy functions designed to produce highly personalized images with great ease: an upgraded digital filter function to accommodate more sophisticated image processing, and a new cross process mode to produce unexpected, eye-catching finishing touches with unique, intriguing colors. The K-x is not only the perfect camera for first-time digital SLR camera users, but also serves as the ideal backup camera for more experienced photographers.
High-quality Image Reproduction With approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, the redesigned CMOS sensor faithfully and accurately reproduces true-to-life images with fine detail and rich color depth.
New PRIME II Image processing engine Fast 4.7 fps shooting with the powerful PRIME II Image processing engine! The new image engine features fast circuitry and low noise image processing, offering greater data-processing speed and produces better-quality images with richer gradation and more accurate color rendition. It also offers high-speed movie data transmission.
Compact, Lightweight Body One of the smallest DSLRs in its class, the Pentax K-x compact, lightweight body allows for one-handed operation and comfort when traveling.
Shake Reduction Technology With sensor-shift Shake Reduction, the Pentax K-x produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions such as telephoto lens photography, shooting in dark or low-light setting without a flash illumination, and sunset scenes.
Live View Capable 2.7-inch LCD and High-precision Viewfinder Photo composition and image viewing at more extreme angles has become easier with the large, 2.7-inch LCD monitor that offers a wide viewing angle and live view capabilities. In addition, the Pentax K-x pentaprism viewfinder offers a 96% field of view and 0.85X magnification, providing a handy alternative in bright lighting or low power conditions.
HD Movie Capture The Pentax K-x vividly captures moving memories at sizes up to 1280 x 720 pixels and at 16:9 high-definition TV proportions.
Pros: Full featured DSLR with excellent low light shots, super fast 4.7 continuous shooting, and 720p video. This is an excellent DSLR and beats Canon and Nikon in its price range.
Camera is very solid in your hand. Definitely designed for right handers but all controls are ergonomic and are mostly reachable without adjusting your grip.
Tons of shooting modes and an incredible amount professional settings that I'm just touching on still.
Cons: Heavy and large considering some of the micro 4/3rds coming out. Still smaller and lighter than Nikon and Canon models.
Also, in order to use full set of features (like continuous shooting) you need a high end SD card. Don't skimp on this! Stick with a name brand and high speed card.
Other Thoughts: I have to mention this, there is a very satisfying click every time you take a picture. It's something that sounds very professional and solid.
Can't recommend this high enough. If you can get over fanboy brand recommendations, this will get you more camera for your money than Nikon or Canon in this cameras price range. At least until they release new cameras...

Rating: 1/5Mirror slap issue!
Pros: Small, great AWB, beautiful colours out of the camers
Other Thoughts: I am having mirror shake image issues with this camera - this would produce blurred images. I am outside of return window and Pentax would not acknowledge the problem insisting it is user error. SO I am stuck with camera that is unusable in exposure range 1/60-1/200 sec and produces soft images in other ranges. Very disappointed, can not do anything about it, failed complaint with BBB.

Cons: have not been able to get the advertised 4 frames per second when shooting action shots. eats batteries
Other Thoughts: after the firmware update from pentax the battery issue is better but if your going to taking a lot of photos i recommend keeping a set of freshly charged batteries on hand. overall i couldn't be happier with this camera

Rating: 5/5Great camera, but watch out for the NiMH battery meter Issue
Pros: - Solid body - Good feel - Amazing features - Thorough users manual - Great ISO performance
Cons: One main issue is battery meter performance, see notes below. Haven't owned / used the camera enough to know of any real cons, may update later.
Even with the battery issue this should not deter would be owners. It is a great camera and at this price point beats out the competition that is easily 200 to 300 more expensive. I don't regret buying the camera at all and even if it is heavier than a point and shoot, the fact that it can use interchangeable lenses and legacy lenses gives this camera unsurpassed flexibility and versatility.
Other Thoughts: The biggest con I found with this camera so far is a known issue with the battery meter when using NiMH batteries. A K-x with firmware 1.0 does not properly register the battery level of NiMH and therefore may show "Battery Depleted" and shut off pre-maturely. To fix this the latest firmware (1.1) must be downloaded from Pentax and applied. Then the level meter must be placed on NiMH (see manual) and then the camera will properly indicate battery level. I've done this and my 4 year old 2600 maH NiMH batteries which before the firmware upgrade could not even power up the camera have now successfully taken over 100 shots without any battery conditioning. Once I put the batteries through several charge/discharge cycles I expect performance to improve. Please see my website for further details http://www.slandi.net
This battery issue should not deter would be buyers. At this price, the K-x is an awesome camera. It is a little heavier than would be a point & shoot, but you get the vers

Tech Level: 4/5
Ownership: 4/5
Rating: 5/5Great entry level camera
Pros: -Solid build -Good kit lens -Impressive high ISO -Can use any K mount lens -Very good image quality -Fast -AA batteries
Cons: -No focus points in viewfinder -Live view is slow (true for most DSLRs) -No dedicated focus assist lamp (just strobes flash) -HD video is not great -No battery grip option
Other Thoughts: This is my first foray into the world of DSLRs. Before this I had only used film SLR cameras and that was quite a few years ago. This camera has met most of my expectation and exceeded quite a few. Pentax has a wide range of legacy lenses that you can find on the used market relatively cheap. This is a great camera for someone wanting to step up from a point and shoot digital for not a lot more money. If you want to take pictures in cold weather, AA lithium batteries will certainly outperform any rechargeable lithium ion for shooting times in cold environments, which isn't something I thought about when buying this camera. (nice little bonus)

Rating: 5/5Pentax K-x is a winner
Pros: Beautiful image quality right out of the box Excellent High ISO capability Can shoot jpeg or raw or both at once Auto white-balance that actually works! Auto-focus is fast and accurate, even in low light Sharp kit lens Solidly built and compact A lot of features and capabilities
Cons: Lack of focus point in viewfinder (you have to look at the back screen)
Other Thoughts: This is much more than what I would consider an "entry level" camera since it has so many great features and capabilities. Everything I could ever want or use in a camera.
