4 out of 5 eggsGood Little Unit

Pros: It is small, lightweight, and the disk suite has a program to help you write certain things to disk. Although it does not have a media player in the suite, you can use VLC player for free pretty easily.

Cons: I was under the impression it also could write Blu-Ray, but that is my mistake. So I want to leave this note so that no one else makes a quick decision.

Other Thoughts: Fast shipping

3 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 woes.

Pros: When I used it with my desktop and old laptop it was fast and reliable.

Cons: The problems arise however when USB 3.0 is involved. I tried it once on my desktops USB 3.0 ports, it didn't work on them, it worked on the 2.0 ports and didn't even think about it again until 3 weeks ago. At that time I got a new laptop from work that only has USB 3.0 ports and the device wouldn't work. So I started trying new drivers, different drivers, even troubleshooting in Windows. What windows says is the USB 2.0 that is built into the drive is known to have problems with 3.0.

Other Thoughts: So now I have a drive that won't work for the express reason I bought it, to use with my work laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsIt won't play BluRay

Pros: Asus brand -??

Cons: The device does not play bluray disc. Try a number of movies, but none. It does apparently write bluray format for data. I play DVD's so it works, just it doesn't play bluray movies, video, etc.

Other Thoughts: The webpage given to install the updates for the firmware, doesn't exist anymore (if ever did). Come on!

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work on VistaSP2, no BR software

Pros: - Sleek look
- able to mount vertically via stand

Cons: - Can't get to work with Vista SP2
- Blu-Ray playback software not included

Other Thoughts: This is a nice looking drive, but I can't get it to work in Vista SP2 (which is odd, because it worked with the initial Vista install until I installed SP2 - yes, I know Vista is old, but I'm using an old license to build a computer for a kid.) Another external BD drive I have of the same form factor works fine, and this does work in a windows 7 machine I have, so I know it's not the computer or that the drive is broken.

It also doesn't come with Blu-Ray playback software, even though the disk says "BD Suite" - very misleading.

A product like this shouldn't be this difficult to use out of the box. An external optical drive should be plug in, install provided software that allows use of everything the drive is capable of, go. I would not recommend this product.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat it says it is

Pros: Small, portable, and strait to the point. Works well and is what it was expected to be with out any high expectations.

Cons: Being that it is blu-ray player, It should have come with a actual blu-ray player software.

Other Thoughts: It's worth what I paid, and as simple as using VLC for a media player and done.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware, but needs updated software

Pros: Fast, stylish and pretty quiet. I bought this to use with my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive, and so far, the performance of the drive itself has been outstanding. I've been able to read and burn CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs efficiently without any problems.

Cons: The software included with the drive does not include an updated Blu-Ray player software. Mine included CyberLink PowerDVD 9, which can play some Blu-Ray movies, but not all. The newer Blu-Ray Discs (i.e. those released from 2013 on) use a newer encryption system that PowerDVD 9 doesn't support. You'll need to get player software that's more up-to-date to play newer blu-ray movies, and that software can be expensive. For DVDs and CDs, it's been fine, it just needs new software for Blu-Rays.

1 out of 5 eggsSlags Disks

Pros: It works sometimes

Cons: Just a terrible drive. Slags disks left and right, how can they release such buggy hardware?

Other Thoughts: I stopped buying Asus motherboards after building nothing but, now I'll never buy any hardware from them. What happened to their once great company?

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible, don't buy.

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: None of the machines I tried it on would recognize the drive at all.

Other Thoughts: Tried it on a few Windows 7 machines (32 bit & 64 bit) and none of them would recognize this drive at all. Tried restarting with the drive connected, refreshing device manager, changing BIOS options, etc. The drive got power and would open but would never show up in device manager on any computer. Also I bought the drive when it was on sale on a business trip, and didn't get home to try it out until well after 30 days past the invoice date so I guess I'm stuck with a $67 paper weight and a few bluray movies I can't watch. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 eggsReally Fast Delivery

Pros: received next day on free shipping (really - ordered Sunday, arrived Monday!!)

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: plays CD's & DVD's, bought it to play Blu-Ray at 1080p, but don't have any yet (guess I'll have to rent one to try it out). Will review again later if I have any problems.
