1 out of 5 eggsRiplocked to 2x

Pros: Drive works (though not as advertised).

Cons: If you are ripping Blurays (I use MakeMKV), don't expect to reach the advertised 8x speed. The drive appears to be riplocked at ~2x (~8.5MB/s). Other drives rip the same discs up to 600% faster.

Other Thoughts: I have not tried to burn any discs.

4 out of 5 eggsQuality, Fast, Price!

Pros: Great Item from Asus (of course) Fast, software easy to manage and friendly use... I giving 4 because the on/off button is a bit stiff to slide... but you get use to....

Cons: On / Off Button stiff a bit... you'll get use to.

4 out of 5 eggsNew Owner, No issues

Pros: Portable. Installed without a hitch on my Surface Pro 2, as is the Cyberlink Software. People complaining about PowerDvd 10 not working clearly are not computer savvy.

Cons: kind of slow to start up, the video went smoothly, but loading between menus, etc isn't the fastest.

Other Thoughts: Pop the DVD in the drive, open it and click the firmware update link...which should always be the first thing you do if it's that blatantly available. Enter your model number and download the Windows 8 patch for PowerDvd 10...go figure, it works just fine!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive but understand cons

Pros: USB 3.0 interface, internally a great drive.

Cons: TERRIBLE DESIGN FOR POWER SWITCH!! Recommend have a strip for it so you can turn it off remotely. Switch is in the back of the drive and makes you scared you are going to break it due to slide design. ASUS didn't test it in the field.
Full size so be prepared for the size and the need for an external power source.

Other Thoughts: Expensive for a external drive but not many choices for USB 3.0. Wish it was smaller and could operate without ext power since I got it for a laptop. IF I had realized it was full size I might have reconsidered my purchase of it.

5 out of 5 eggsbw-12d1s-u

Pros: USB 3.0 is as fast or faster then SATA--plug and play-- no drivers needed.-.You can use the shortcut to open and close drawer!!! I only put the disk in and take it out---.Use power outlet switch to turn it on an off ,instead of switch on back, or just leave it on all the time---- it looks cool.. On the desktop it is convenient to use --Burned 22 gig in 11 minutes!! Software works if you follow the directions. (install the whole media suite and download the patch)Watched a blue ray movie I just rented with bundled software.-- no problems. If you want to buy better software for this drive ,you can do even more!!!!

Cons: absolutely non...snap it up before its gone!

Other Thoughts: would you buy a hot rod and complain about putting gas in it or upgrading it?

5 out of 5 eggsLove the speed

Pros: Makes great use of USB 3.0, very fast. Main used for backing up my Blu-Ray disc so I can watch them on the go and works so good now I need a nice external HDD.
Very quiet, happy I went with this instead of a replacement drive for my laptop.

Cons: It is a bit large but I knew that when I ordered it, so can't really complain. Wish the USB cable was a standard cable, in case you want to use a longer one.

Other Thoughts: Extremely satisfied with the burner and it matches my Asus laptop. I would definitely recommend this product if you are looking for a external Blu-Ray burner.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad, Poor designed eject button

Pros: This burner uses USB 3.0. Non needed for burning CDs, but helpful for burning Blu-Rays at higher speeds.

This burner is very quiet. I could hardly tell that it was running.

The bundled software did its job. It comes with software to watch DVDs and Blu-rays and to burn and copy discs.

Cons: The rear power switch, which slides back and forth, is a little hard to slide. Luckily, I don't use optical media daily.

The front eject button is very poorly designed. You have to press it just right for it to open. In my opinion, simpler is better. Get rid of the fancy door and button and put the drive flush with the outside of the enclosure.

Bundled Cyberlink software is not the latest, but a few generations old (Version 10 compared to Version 13). I figured they wouldn't package the latest so that they may get you to upgrade.

The unit would not burn to some Maxell DVD-R discs that I had laying around. It did nothing but return errors. After finding other media laying around, I figure that these discs and this machine weren't made to be together.

Other Thoughts: I recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 23 All-in-one, which does not have an optical drive. Seeing this one was USB 3.0, and made by Asus, I thought I would give it a try. Hookup was fairly simple. First thing I noticed was the switch was a little hard to slide on and off. Then I noticed that you had to press the eject button just right in order to eject the disc.

The bundled software loaded up and updates were easy to install. The bundled software isn't the latest offered by Cyberlink, but it does its job of play Blu-Ray and DVDs.

My first test at burning didn't go well, and I was ready to return the item. I had some Maxell DVD-R, and neither Adobe Elements nor the Bundled Cyberlink would burn without an immediate error. I then tried Memorex DVD+R Lightscibe media that I had, and no issues burning.

I have yet to try burning to Blu-Ray media, since the videos that I make as a hobby are usually small enough to fit on a AVCHD DVD.
