The ASUS DRW-24B1ST is capable of reading and writing data on DVD±R/±RW, DVD-RAM formats. It is a power saving drive and allows you to permanently delete the data on rewritable discs. This provides you with flexibility and efficiency in terms of multimedia data storage and sharing.

E-Green The innovative drive E-Green Engine technology features an E-Green Mode that automatically closes drive applications when not in use to help conserve energy - helping the environment by decreasing CO2 emissions and reducing the depletion of trees.
E-Hammer E-Hammer allows you to permanently delete the data on writable disc (CD-R and DVD-R) formats. Once the data is deleted, it cannot be recovered or restored, and the optical drive will not be able to read the disc. This ensures data security, eliminates the hassle of scratching your old discs, and conforms with ASUS’ commitment to environmental protection.
AVRS (Auto Vibration Reducing System) The AVRS technology is designed to minimize the vibration caused by the spindle motor and resonance between components as well as the drive and PC cases. AVRS is designed to reduce vibration and noise induced by unbalanced mass of rotating machinery. With AVRS, ASUS DRW-24B1ST provides high readability and playability.
OTS (Optimal Tuning Strategy) With OTS, the drive will perform a test before really burning which generate the optimal burning strategy automatically for the best burning quality.

I do a lot of reads and about 10% of the reads in writes, and it keeps going strong, surprisingly. If I had another SATA port I'd buy another. Or if this one dies. ASUS forever at this point! It's cheap and easy to use, if a bit noisy. Cons: The disc tray dies after one or two years. I've purchased this same model twice, and it always had the same problem: The tray starts to stick and refuses to come out whenever you press the button, until it just stops opening one day. The last drive I bought ate one of my discs and I had to disassemble the device to get it back. Other Thoughts: I don't know why this particular model has had that problem, every time I've bought it. Other drives? The motor dies or the laser does. But not this one. I'd recommend not buying this particular DVD burner. Please keep in mind that optical drives are known to wear over time. Your optical drive issue could be that the gears are probably worn out and the drive tray may have slipped off its track. It would be best if you replace the drive with a new one instead trying to get it repaired as these drives would only cost around $20.
