4 out of 5 eggs2nd one

Pros: Works, if you are into the dial up thing. Simple and easy with Win7. Plug it in and it works.

Cons: I had one die on me. But I bought a second.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my parents, as they are "never going to pay more for the internets", it worked for about 13 months, then it died. I do however believe something happend to it because they had a bad phone line. So I bought another and it works fine. They have had the second one for 3 days now.

1 out of 5 eggsMy first bad experience with Rosewill

Pros: Pretty box.

Cons: After a full month unable to get Windows 7 64-bit to recognize this device. Downloaded the latest Win-7 drivers and wouldn't work. Try using the Vista 64-bit drivers as others had suggested with no luck. I had the device plugged in to a known working USB slot and windows pops up a "device not recognized" window. Every time I try to install the driver, windows pops up an error message reading "unable to find connected MODEM device".

Other Thoughts: I normally love using Rosewill products as (until now) I have never had a problem with any of their products.

Windows 7 64-bit users beware.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you very much for purchasing this unit. We strive to provide the most reliable and highest quality products to our customers.

This is a windows 7 ready device which means you need to make sure you have all windows updates downloaded and installed onto your PC. Then you can do a search automatically through windows update to have it automatically recognize the device and install the necessary drivers for it to work. The same process is done for windows 8.

Feel free to contact the Rosewill Customer Support team for further assistance at 1-800-575-9885 Monday - Friday 8AM - 5PM PST or via email at techsupport@rosewill.com

5 out of 5 eggsGreat USB Modem Compatible WIth Windows 8

Pros: Works flawlessly with windows 8. I see where people have been complaining about the drivers not functioning properly with windows 7 and the fact It's not compatible with windows 8. This is highly not the case.

I have 10+ years of consistent hands on computer repair Experience.

Also the drivers are resident meaning you don't need to use the disk that comes with this product.

Cons: People fail to realize when new computers are bought from a store most of the time certain setup procedures still need to be preformed. (updates ect) When someone buys a USB modem, plugs it in and the speed is really slow they automatically blame the USB Modem when in reality most of the time on average 1 gb of updates are needed. As soon as the computer goes online the computer normally will start to download the updates automatically, thus hindering the small dial-up bandwidth you have. Making it almost impossible to load webpages. Best thing to do if only dial-up is available in your area is to take the computer to a local computer professional who can setup the computer the correct way for the best possible computing experience.

Other Thoughts: Granted very few people have dial up internet anymore, However there probably will always be people with dial-up. Newer computers are no longer shipping with dial-up modems. There will probably always be a call for a product like this.

Dialup modems work better with internet service providers that You don't have to use their software with. ex AOL. You get more speed when you configure a connection using a DUN (Dialup networking, No extra Software)

I have been in communication with Rosewill and shortly they will be updating the description of this product to be compatible with windows 8. The old boxes will probably have a sticker slapped on them saying "windows 8 ready!"

3 out of 5 eggsAddendum to review

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: Doesn't seem to play nicely with windows-7

Other Thoughts: Rosewill did contact me and provide a credit for the purchase. From my experience and others, I would say do not purchase this modem for use with win-7. As for as other OS, I could not say.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: cheap

Cons: No troubleshooting guide in manual, mfgs website worse than useless, no access to tech support other than driver downloads

Other Thoughts: Purchased to use for sending faxes. Does not get a dial tone. Rated one egg only because there is no lower rating. Useful only for target practice.

2 out of 5 eggsAdequate for some purposes

Pros: Works well with Linux right out of the box

Cons: No way to access saved settings
(also see other reviews)

Other Thoughts: This modem treats ATZ as if it were AT&F ! When you try to restore stored settings, it reverts to the factory default setting. Effectively whatever you've saved with AT&W is inaccessible and useless. The only workaround is to include any needed settings in your applications' modem initialization string.

Mandriva Linux immediately recognized it as /dev/ttyACM0. I'm just using it for v.92 dialup as a backup, and it does dial and connect. It's adequate, considering how seldom I'll be using it. Unless it's on sale and you don't expect to use it much, I'd recommend spending a little more and getting the U.S. Robotics modem or other more reputable brand.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems to work

Pros: Cheap. Seems to work.

Cons: Driver seems a bit funky?

Other Thoughts: I have only tested it briefly but it seems to work fine. I bought it to have as a backup when traveling.

Since I've never used a USB modem before, I don't know if it's a driver problem or a Windows quirk, but it only seems to be detected correctly by Windows (Home Premium 64bit) if you connect it to the computer before turning the computer on. Not a big deal for me since it is only there as a backup connection method.

2 out of 5 eggsHas problems

Pros: It works, as a basic fax modem.

Cons: Doesn't support a lot of features, including some that it says it does:

- Caller ID receipt does not work at all - the modem accepts the command (AT+VCID=1), but does not show the caller ID information. Google searches show this is a known problem since 2008. Doing VCID query (AT+VCID=?) gets an answer back that this is supported.

- Does not support Fax Adaptive Answer (AT+FAA) mode.

Other Thoughts: The lack of either of the above features makes this modem useless and a waste of money for my particular situation, but as a basic modem it seems to work OK.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsIffy Fax Model on Win7

Pros: When it works, it does what it needs to do

Cons: We have been trying to use this on Windows 7-64 and it will only work for a while, then it has to be unplugged and plugged into a different USB port. This causes it to reset and it runs for a while again. I normally like Rosewill products, but this one hasn't performed well in this specific application.

Manufacturer Response:

Please kindly contact the Rosewill support team either via phone at 800-575-9885 or via email at rma@rosewill.com so we may assist you with a replacement.
Thanks,
