4 out of 5 eggs
Worked just fine under Knoppix 6.2 -- I needed to copy the contents of an old IDE drive over to a newer SATA one.

Similar to other reviews. Except, my 4 units each came with an inexpensive SATA cable (with no locking clip). Nothing ...

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

Pros: Works intermittently.

Cons: I bought 3 of these things, and I was highly disappointed that I had to buy additional power adapters to get them to work. I tried with 2 Seagate 500Gb drives (different models), and they would not work what so ever. The drives work fine with a USB adapter I also have. I did get it to work with Western Digital 200GB and 100gb drives. I only use it on the 200GB as I have an IDE for the 100GB, and after a random amount of time, the device becomes unrecognizable, causing windows to crash/hard lock. This issues has become more and more frequent as time progressed and now, my system locks up every hour or so when the device is connected.

Other Thoughts: I ran a Speedfan S.M.A.R.T. test on the 200Gb drive, and everything checks out fine.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked just fine under Knoppix 6.2 -- I needed to copy the contents of an old IDE drive over to a newer SATA one.

Cons: The volume wasn't recognized by Windows 7, 64-bit edition, although the bridged IDE drive did show up in the device manager tree as a SCSI disk device.

Other Thoughts: Make sure the IDE drive's jumper is set to Master. Your power supply will need both a free SATA power connector and one of the older-school 4 pin molex power connectors. You will also obviously need a SATA data cable. None of these are included.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds a floppy disk power cable!!

Pros: Allows use of your old IDE drive with a SATA-only motherboard.

Cons: Not supported by the SATA-only power supply that you likely bought with your SATA-only mother board!

Other Thoughts: Had to buy a SATA-to-IDE power cable adapter, and an IDE-to-FDD adapter, after the fact. The cables together cost more than the adapter.

3 out of 5 eggsIt is what it is

Pros: I have this installed to a DVD burner in a new machine that only has sata controllers. It works great outside of Vista 64. BIOS sees the drive, no issues booting from a CD/DVD. Booted UBCD4Win into XP 32 no problems.

Cons: For some reason Vista 64 refuses to acknowledge the drives existence. I think this may be a Vista issue. The adapter is driverless so there is nothing available to download and try.

Other Thoughts: I made sure the SATA was in IDE mode, and also the jumper set to master on the dvd drive. When booting Vista will pause for quite some time while the disk activity light is solid, then continues to boot. It does not do this if I unplug the drive. Seems like Vista or maybe a 64 bit thing. XP 32 worked fine. I ended up ordering new SATA dvd burner (should have done that anyway), thought I would save a few bucks by trying this adapter.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works well

Pros: They worked as advertized
HD activity led's built in.
Fairly low profile
Good connectors
40MB/s peak transfer rate with my pata drives

Cons: I had to run additional floppy power connectors. A 4 pin molex adaptor would have been nice.
No documentation.

Other Thoughts: Installation was tight as my hard disks are mounted horizontal and perpendicular to the case. I anticipated this and purchased sata cables with clips and a 90 degree connection.
I purchased this as an alternative to a promise ultra/133 controller which was not compatible with my windows 7 64 bit.

Pros: it works. Allows me to use my old pata drive in a new MOBO with only one IDE port. Have my main boot drive and cd rom on the IDE port. Second drive is connected using this adapter.

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsit's picky

Pros: Works with my 80GB WD and 80GB Maxtor PATA drives. I was able to boot existing openSUSE and WinXP installations on these drives.

Cons: Didn't exactly work with my NEC DVD-RW drive -- booting Linux SysRecue CD would start, but then the kernel would complain about the DVD drive failing to clear some state flag, and then it gets confused and doesn't work, bails out to the root shell.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you set your PATA device to Master (or Master single). Also, these adapters require separate power cable (floppy drive style connector). The Syba cables that newegg sells for this are overpriced ($2.99) and pretty bad -- I bought 2 and 1 didn't work outright, I had to manually take it apart and reconnect the wires.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our products. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: As always Newegg did an excellent job with the shipping, got the adapter in 2 days :-) The adapter does its job, the fdd power cable requirement was kinda annoying but manageable. Plugged in my gf's old IDE HDD and presto, windows recognized it right away. I was able to go ahead and tranfer over all her old files to her shiney new SATA HDD. Going to be hanging on to this thing for any other quick jobs that might come up.

Cons: Needs a dedicated power source in the form of a floppy disk drive power cable (4 pin not molex), but just have to make sure you have one available. Also make sure you have a SATA cable and IDE cable handy since it's not supplied.

Other Thoughts: Not sure I'd trust this thing for extended usage or to run your main harddrive. I say just eat the 30 // 60 bucks for a SATA dvd // HDD. Worked well enough for the 20 minutes i needed to transfer files so I'm happy.
