2 out of 5 eggstwo stars rapidly dropping to one - whir-whir-whir in 10 minute increments - confirmed

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: The reviews looked good. My experience - not so much.

Cons: I'm under 90 days w/this replacement 2 tb hard drive. Dropped into an existing two disk d-link nas (raid 1) that's been quietly chugging away for years. I got 4 years (?) or more out of the previous drive before failure.
This replacement "red" drive - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - whir-whir-whir in approx. 10 minute increments.

One thing I confirmed today - powering up nas degraded - without the red dirve - noise goes away - it's the red drive acting up, burning itself out.

Today - went as far as checking the only (command line) tool to check firmware. It comes up "not needed".

Googling this model - I'm not alone. It's going to burn itself well before the 3 year warranty period. Probably too late for a return to newegg.com. Disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Robert F.,
Thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention. It is important both drives within a RAID to be the same manufacture and model as our RAID enabled drives utilize TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) to ensure both drives spin up together. The WD Red is designed in cooperation with many NAS Raid enclosure manufacturers such as your D-Link; we have a compatibility list by manufacture within our Product Features web page, and for your convenience we’ve placed a link to this article below.
“WD Red Product Features”: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

Excessive spin up and idling or load/Unload cycles may be an indication the drive is not kept busy enough. This may be alleviated by running the WD Red SMART load/Unload utility to modify this behavior to wait longer before positioning the heads in their park position and turning off unnecessary electronics. Please follow the link below to download and read the instructions for performing this upgrade.
“WD Red Downloads”: http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=619&lang=en#

If you feel there may be a problem with the drive, it is recommended testing the drive outside the enclosure and running our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics Utility. This may require utilizing a USB to SATA adapter or external enclosure; and follow the link below for more information.

We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns further by phone or Email below. If you would please mention this Newegg review with the support team member upon your initial contact, we will be happy to work with you and find a suitable solution.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: Runs cool and quiet
Fair price
Well packed

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Installed in a Netgear Stora NAS as JBOD. Transfer times could be better but that's a Stora fault and not the RED. Will buy another down the road for the Stora (reconfigured and pair with the original in RAID). Will update if issues arise.

Thanks NewEgg!

5 out of 5 eggsBig, quiet, solid -- What's not to like?

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: Title says it all; plenty of storage for my archival material, absolutely silent in my Buffalo NAS setup (at about 5 feet distance), has run 24-7 for about a year with nary a whimper. Cost v. capacity is now very favorable. Will buy another when budget permits.

Cons: No known problems at this time. This drive did cost more per Tb than some drives, but even most of that small quibble has disappeared at current prices. As WD makes clear, this unit is optimized for NAS service, and is not intended as the primary or secondary drive in a desktop/tower system. Its bigger brothers in the 3 and 5 Tb sizes seem to be less well-regarded (3 eggs vs 4 for this'n); not sure why this should be, but prospective purchasers should review the comments on those units with care.

Other Thoughts: Those seeking a quiet, reliable and cost-effective NAS solution should give this guy a careful look. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone wanting well-performing, dependable bulk/archival storage.

5 out of 5 eggsFine HDD

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: Firmware features that benefit use in a NAS or RAID setup. The unit has only been deployed for about 2 months as of today with no issues. Will update in the future if any issues arise prematurely.

Cons: Rated at 1/1x10^14 URE so this is not an enterprise grade drive (e.g. 1/1x10^16 URE adds a price premium). Keep this in mind if you are using this drive for storage of critical data and plan for drive failure accordingly.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: I have two of these drives running Raid1 in my Synology DS214+ for over 6 months now.
I've had a couple power failures in that time and their are still in good health.

Cons: none so far

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: absolutely none

Cons: First one DOA, returned for replacement.

Second one also failed - 137 hours into Pre-Read, only achieved 1%. Similar on second Pre-Read attempt.

Clearly WD has no quality control.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello There John K.,
It is unfortunate hearing about your unexpected concerns with your WD Red drives upon arrival, but we would like to reach out to you to discuss this further. However, in the meantime, we would recommend testing the drive outside the NAS enclosure by utilizing our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows in order to determine the root cause of these failures. 5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: I have five of these running now as members of two different arrays. They work great. Sometimes they can get a little hot, like during a parity check operation where the disk is seeking for 24-36 hours straight. Speed is good for RAID, and have been reliable for me so far.

Cons: Could be cheaper, WD charges a premium for the fancy red label (I have a bunch of WD Greens running in arrays too that work just as well)

Other Thoughts: Hope drive prices come down. I'd love to get some 8TB disks for my arrays.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: None

Cons: Received one new drive. DOA, HDD not recognized or would not initialize. Tried many connection combinations on 3 different computers.

Other Thoughts: Label on HDD has a manufacturing date of June 2015 so quality is still an issue. RMA issued by Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

This review is from: WD Red 2TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

Pros: Good size & good price.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 drives and put each one at a time in my unRAID NAS and ran a pre-clear script to write all zeros and then read the SMART. All 3 passed, had perfect SMART values and no pre-existing conditions. I think these drives will last a long time.
