4 out of 5 eggsWorks as Expected

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Very simple. Plug it in and it works.

Cons: Doesn't work with Seagate's backup schedule software. Because it's an expansion drive it wouldn't work with Seagate's backup software.

5 out of 5 eggswonderful 1tb portable hdd

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: 1tb storage, portable, usb3. works like it should, not much preinstalled software that slows down the drive

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: I now own both the wd and seagate portable drives and I can say that both drives perform equally as good because they both use usb3.0
The only difference is that each brand goes on sale at different times during the year.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, great price!

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Great price, small size, very easy installation. USB powered. Does what it is supposed to do.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I discovered that to make it run under USB 3.0, I needed a PCI card. I ordered one, since I wanted to run at 10 times faster speeds. When it arrived and I opened my case, I discovered that the UBS 3.0 card was what is called PCI EXPRESS. My computer has a slot for such, but . . . the slot was already occupied by my television tuner card. I use this to save and burn DVDs of my favorite TV programs. So I had to decide whether I wanted continue to save TV programs, or back up faster. I went with TV programs. My machine backs up at 1 AM Monday each week so it doesn't really bother me as far as how fast it is running. But be aware of this if you want to use USB 3.0. It uses a PCI EXPRESS card and most computers, if they have one, only have one slot.

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

5 out of 5 eggsCame in super fast and is great

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: 1. Portable
2. 1TB
3. USB 3.0/2.0 compatible
4. Does not get hot when under heavy load unlike my WD portable HDD

Cons: None really, but see"other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: I kind of wish Seagate made their product registration more concise and their website easier to navigate. I registered the product, but I have no idea what it actually does because I don't know how to view my registered products at their website

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive, Advice To Users With Issues

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Great drive, fast with USB 3.0.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am writing this review because I noticed some reviewers had issues with the drive being shown "active" in device manager but not showing in My Computer" What you need to do in that circumstance is go into Disk Manager and assign the drive a letter. Normally when this happens the drive is using a letter that is already in use by another device and thus will not show up in my computer until the drive letter is changed. That is not just this drive either, thumb drives, internal HDDS, and externals can all have this issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after two-ish years

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: It was a decent drive while it worked...

Cons: ...but I think I've had it ~two years, and it stopped working without warning. When plugged in it now makes what I'd describe as a faint beeping sound and is not recognized as a device by any of my computers.

Since it was obviously out of warranty opened the case and plugged in just to see if maybe it was the enclosure, but it was the drive.

Other Thoughts: Guess one year warranty means you shouldn't expect it to last two years?

This drive mostly sat around on my shelf, so it's not like it should have been worn out or anything.

3 out of 5 eggsLast a Year and a Half

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Fast transfer rate, wakes quickly

Cons: Sometimes would disconnect and require unplugging and replugging to connect. This became more frequent after a year and wake up required longer to read. A folder mysteriously moved into another folder and became impossible to read, however the folders within could be read. Moved to another computer that read and allowed content to be transferred. It failed completely soon afterward and the drive (a Samsung) within was removed in case the interface might be the cause of failure, but the drive itself no longer is readable.

Other Thoughts: At least I had some warning of an impending problem and got my 600gb of data transferred.
