2 out of 5 eggsFailed After a Year

Pros: The drive itself is well constructed. The adapter to the external power and USB is garbage. After my drive broke my instinct was to take it apart. The symptoms were it was not showing up in my disk management or being registered by my computer; though, the drive would turn on and spin when i connected the drive to my computer. After cracking the case there are some phillips screws you take a metal brace off and then you can slide a triangular piece of circuit board out from the normal SATA connector for a in-tower HDD. I put the drive into an adapter
and she fired up perfectly with all of my 1.8 TB of data.

Cons: Failed to work thanks to the SATA to USB adapter inside. Easy fix - read pros.

Other Thoughts: Worth the trouble for me.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed results

Pros: quiet storage

Cons: goes to sleep and can't be woken up - the only solution I can find is to write a batch file and schedule a task to write/delete a file on a interval < 5 minutes - that is silly - used as data drive and now I want to use Plex remotely but can't because of sleep issue

1 out of 5 eggsdoes not stay running

Pros: Fast, large capacity, USB3

Cons: Does not like to stay active. If you aren't using it, drive likes to SHUT DOWN. The only way to get it running again is to pull the power then reattach. Not at all useful when you are 50 or 60 miles away from the computer, trying to access it remotely. Toshiba needs to make the power management ****CONFIGURABLE*****. And we're not talking abouyt some MSWin or Mac OSX-only utilities either.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cheap drive

Pros: Almost totally silent, cheap and so far reliable. Connected up to my Netgear R7000 as a NAS and my Ubuntu Plex server with no issues. Power management works perfectly fine with Linux. Transfer speed is perfectly reasonable and as expected for this price.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Not sure what the other reviewers are talking about... I have two of these drives and they have been perfectly reliable. The USB connectors are fine. It has an industry standard USB 3.0 type connector and works just fine on both USB 2.0 and 3.0 PC ports on several different PCs and laptops. Also, if you have a bad drive why not return it under warranty instead of complaining about it?

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Failed in 2 months

Pros: cheap price,runs quiet

Cons: no on or off switch
drive failed after 2 months
horrible technical support

Other Thoughts: Toshiba customer support was terrible. The cs rep i spoke with was very rude. I called to say my harddrive failed and her response, what do you mean it failed? i said it crashed and my data is gone. she then told me my files were corrupted and to install and run the nti backup program which would reformat the harddrive like new. i took it to the local pc repair and paid to have my data recovered. i'm going back to iomega harddrives. my 1 tb worked for years with no problems.nyou get what you pay for. that was $70 down the drain.

3 out of 5 eggscheap and easy

Pros: is easy to install,
cheap price
runs quiet

Cons: cord is extremely short and falls out of port with the slightest movement.
no on or off switch

Other Thoughts: i bought this for extra storage.i have windows 8 and my computer recognized the harddrive really easily. i just plugged it in and the computer did the rest. i read the reviews and knew not to install the extra software that it came with. i used my computer's backup software program instead.i backed up files from my laptop,my tablet,my camera and mp3 player with no problems. i just plugged them in and dragged and dropped the files i wanted to save.i only had it about 2 months, so i hope it lasts. i know this has a lot of drive failures but 2tb for $70 it was worth the risk. my only complaint is the cord is extremely short you have to place the harddrive right next to your computer. my desktop has ports in the back so i had to buy an usb extension cord to use it because my electrical socket is on the side of the computer desk. if i place the harddrive on the side of the pc close to the wall socket, the usb cord won't reach the ports on the back of my pc. the harddrive is small enough (about the size of a bible) that i thought i could travel with it and my laptop, but because the cord is so sensitive to movement(it falls out the port at the slightest touch) i only use it at home on my desktop.

5 out of 5 eggsGood to Know!

Pros: Beware USB 2.0 port users!

Just got the 2TB Canvio, when connected to a PC usb 2.0 port, it will give drive/data error problems due the combined usb 3.0 plug with 5pins is at the back behind the usb 2.0 with 4pins in the plug.
When insert the plug too deep in the usb2.0 port will make contact with the usb3 pins, thus making short circuit, thus drive/data errors.
When connecting to PC USB2, Use a USB2 a to micro USB2 b type cable to solve any drive problems, will work perfect.

Cons: usb 3/2 combined plug design unreliable with usb2 ports.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: HDD still works.

Cons: I have an awful time connecting this to any computer. The cord that plugs into the device is incredibly loose. Hard disk drive will constantly lose connection, which I then have to wiggle around to hit the sweet spot.

3 out of 5 eggsFails to write-won't wake up

Pros: It does work as stated by the other lucky reviewers-when it is awake and my old Win XP sp3 desktop sees it. And I find the Backups simple (this is where my technical knowledge is lacking) meaning that the files are backed up in a usable format - no need of the backup software to get and copy a file from the 'backup.'

Cons: My OS can't wake it up when it looks for this HDD (why the 2 D's?) and the HDD went into standby. Windows repeatedly tries to write to it without luck and I end up with several Warning boxes on screen that say I have a write failure. Bummer-this makes it extremely unreliable for the way I believe most of us like a HDD to work - be there when the PC needs to work with it WITHOUT a Human to 'shake' it awake.

Other Thoughts: If one wants this for a once a week or month backup schedule where the user would attach this HDD to the system and run the backup then put it in storage (off site), it might be considered a great product, but it isn't sold that way. So, maybe that is how it will end up for me. And who knows maybe a driver update will be available that will correct this 'heavy' sleeper. Wake UP!!!!
