The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power.

Benchmark performance results prove the 5900RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400RPM). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

Pros: cheap, higher capacity.

Cons: it's not 7200rpm

Other Thoughts: 30 days from invoice date today and it's starting to die... clicking, bad response times, read/writing going downhill. It'll be shot any day now

Pros: Arrived the day after I ordered it which rocks. Installed it and it works nicely.

Cons: Nothing so far.

Other Thoughts: I'm using it just to store video and it looks like a perfect fit.

3 out of 5 eggs50%

Pros: Looks like a hard drive, Newegg issues fast RMA emails.

Cons: Ordered 2, only one worked. Newegg issued RMA, which sends out a drive, eventually, ground shipped.

Other Thoughts: So, if you get one and it doesnt work, you might be waiting a while to get a replacement. Bit of advice, might want to check out a smaller capacity drive, they seem to be a tad more solid.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Drive

Pros: none.

Cons: This drive failed within 2 months and Seagate replaced it under warranty. Now it has failed again with the same issue of shutting itself down. Tried it in two different machines and a USB sata dock. Seagate gives you a hard time because their diag software does not find an issue or give a failure code. This will get costly since I have to pay shipping to them each time it fails.

Other Thoughts: I will be sticking to WD form now on.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a bad drive

Pros: Not a bad drive, purchased it back in February. Set it up in 3 equal partitions with a windows 7 64 bit system. No problems, no errors, no clicking.

AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition
MSI -790FX-GD70
OZC Platinum 4GB
Sapphire Vapor-X 5770 1GB x 2

Cons: $20 drop since I bought it.

Other Thoughts: Guess it's just a matter of luck or whichever. I've always used maxtor for as long as I could remember with no problems. Unfortunately Seagate bought them out, which I guess could be either good for Seagate or bad for Maxtor?

3 out of 5 eggsI apologize to seagate

Pros: Nice capacity for a good price

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I couldn't see how to edit my earlier comment, so I want to try to correct myself here.

I had complained that the drive failed.

IT HASN'T!

For some reason, it was no longer showing up in Explorer, but I finally got a message that the drive was ready to use. I still couldn't find it in Explorer, but a few minutes online solved the problem.

The drive WORKS FINE and I was hasty in blaming Seagate. I can't apologize enough for that.

However, my comments about the replacement with a refurbished drive is still unacceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsDisaster

Pros: Nice capacity for a good price

Cons: Quit working after five months

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive from Newegg on 2/9/10. As of yesterday (7/17/10) it's DOA. Since I was using it as an external drive, I tried it on another computer - As they say, it was still dead. Now I have to use that computer to store a partial backup of important files until I can get a replacement for the Seagate. But get this...

The drive is under warranty. However, I have to pay to ship it back, and in return, Seagate will send a REFURBISHED drive with a ninety day warranty, and all my data is on the drive I need to return - which they claim they will wipe clean.

Needless to say I was shocked. I figured I'd have to send the drive with all my info on it, but the rest was just adding insult to injury. A five-month-old drive and I don't even get a new replacement?! And a warranty that amounts to substantially less than the original?! And I get to pay for the privilege?!

The way I see it, you're playing Russian Roulette if you buy this drive.
