4 out of 5 eggsThat sound!

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: The price, I mean, you just can't beat it. As for everything else, so far so good. Scans found no errors on the drive. I confess that I have not put so much as one file on the thing tho I've had it in the rig for a week now.

Cons: During spin-up it sounds like a diesel motor, knocking and rattling. Very unnerving to me personally. Even so, not one error logged since installation and that's comforting.

Other Thoughts: I gave it a 4 out of 5 simply because of the noise. Functionally it seems perfect. If you are looking for one of these, you've found it. Buy it!

5 out of 5 eggsTons of Storage Space For A Great Price

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: A great drive so far. It's pretty quiet (when you get a good one) and was a breeze to install. I did a FULL format overnight and was ready to go in the morning. I cool ALL of my HDDs with a case fan so it stays cool to the touch (except when transferring TBs of data), then it gets a little warm. I have four other HGST Deskstar NAS drives and all have been rock solid.

Cons: So far so good. Only time will tell. A 5 year warranty would be nice. I have two of these drives now. The first one has an annoying thumping sound every few seconds (built FEB-2015). The second one is silent (built OCT-2015). HGST obviously fixed something. I will probably try to RMA the first drive.

Other Thoughts: It seems a few people have HDDs (from all manufacturers) fail on them fairly early on or just after the warranty expires. I bet none of them do a FULL format on the drive just after installing it. I have done that for every HDD I have ever bought (1995-2015) and never had one fail. And I bought a few of those IBM Deskstar 75GXPs. I might be just lucky, but until a drive fails on me I'm not changing my installation method.

My recent purchase (4/4/2016) the HDD was poorly packaged. It came from Memphis, TN. The box looks like it was made from a larger box. Only one air cushion (three chambers) was used to secure HDD box in oversized box. They might as well used nothing. When I picked up the Newegg box from my porch the HDD box slid around inside. NOT GOOD. I miss the old days when packing peanuts were used. You never worried about products shifting around during shipping.

2 out of 5 eggsFast Transfer

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Large storage, it's fast and simple to install.

Cons: I partitioned this drive so I had 2 storage areas, it failed after moving 900GB of data. Lost everything on the new drive.

Other Thoughts: Maybe I just got a lemon but I will be returning this drive to replace it for another brand. First impressions count and this is the first time I've ventured away from my trusty seagate drives.

5 out of 5 eggsFast for a spinner

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: This drive is fast for a spinner. I ran ATTO Benchmark on it and it maxed out at 225 MB/Sec very quickly.

Cons: None really. I it makes a little noise but nothing I can't live with.

Other Thoughts: I would purchase again.
I have not had it long so I can't say anything about reliability but it is a Hitachi Drive so it should last at least 4 times longer than a seagate.

1 out of 5 eggsLoudest drives I have ever heard, does not stop clicking

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Could not use, hard to find any good points if you can not use the drives.

Cons: Loud drives, not suitable for home NAS.
With no Nas activity, they still will clatter every 3 seconds.
Nas will not go into sleep mode.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these for a new Synology Nas. I have 3 others running on the same shelf , 14 drives total, very quiet.
These drives can be heard in the next room, and never stop making noise, totally unacceptable in a home environment. Returning drives and replacing with WD Reds which I already use.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and reliable

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Fast - average speed of 160MB/s or faster
Reliable - have 8 of these, all reliable and healthy.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I like HGST drives, they are reliable. I have 8x6TB and 5x4TB and a few 2TB hitachi drives. All work flawlessly so far. Every time when newegg has sale on HGST 6TB, I grab 2 or more.

5 out of 5 eggsAll 5 worked right out of the box

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: They do what a Hard Drive should. All 5 formatted, and passed S.M.A.R.T tests.
Good Price. I got these on sale for the same price as the WD 6 TB Red Hard Disks when thy are on sale. The WD red are 5400 RPM and these are 7200 RPM.

Cons: none yet.

Other Thoughts: Of course the morning after I purchased these the Seagate 8 TB drives that I was looking at went on sale.
I purchased these drives for a new NAS I purchased. It is a Asustor AS5008T. These drives were on the compatibility list and are working great in it.
Rant to follow.........
All you people who complain when you buy a drive that windows does not show the full amount of disk space and you say you have expert knowledge level don't know what you are talking about. Hard Disk manufactures state in their documentation that they define a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows (being a computer program) reports disk size using base 2 not base 10. A binary gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power or1,073,741,824 bytes. if you divide 1,000,000,000 by 1,073,741,824 you get .931 which is what windows reports for a gigabyte drive. (yes, I have been around for a long time. my first hard disk was a MFM format 40 MEGABYTE drive). So if you do the math for terabytes these 6 TB drives I purchased show as 5.45 TB in windows. They show up as this size in Linux also. So please stop complaining about how you are not getting the full capacity you paid for.

3 out of 5 eggsBig, Loud, and Slooow

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: 6TB of storage

Cons: This is the loudest HD I have ever owned and I have owned more than a hundred HDs. The 4tb HGST model can sustain between 70 to 100mb transfers. This 6tb model can only sustain an average of 55mbs.
This HD is loud and slow.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend buying this HD!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD no problems so far

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Bought it a year ago, using it 24/7 without any trouble so far. Go for it!

Cons: Makes a clicking noise every 2 seconds or so, does not bother me but if you get easily annoyed by noises.

Other Thoughts: HGST is a Western Digital company, you are safe with this disk.
