Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Pros: Great size, especially for the price; reliable; decently fast. I've used this drive since November, 2011 with absolutely zero problems.

Cons: It's almost filled and I didn't order another one.

Pros: Cheap, power efficient, good large data storage. Those factors made this a candidate for RAID >0.

Cons: Poor reviews regarding stability - makes a candidate for RAID >0.
One of two mirrored drives failed after 5483 hours - which in this system was two years and three months.

Other Thoughts: One of two drives has entered a failure spiral 2 years and three months after purchase. The actuaries nailed that one. Good thing the pros and cons led me to select this drive for a RAID 1 system.

This is the first WD drive I've had fail - I've even got some over 15 years old (although they don't see much use these days) which are still working. It seems that this particular line is a lemon in regards to going the distance. Still a good candidate for a cheap RAID >0 system.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive for use in my home NAS. It has been running 24/7 for about a year without any issues or slow down.

Pros: It has lasted almost 2 years and decided to start its death process with a couple months left on the warranty and didn't die completely yet so I was able to retrieve all data off of the drive.

Cons: I'm getting "disk failure is imminent" warning in Ubuntu which says the drive has been powered on for 1.2 years and the temperature is currently 36 C.

Other Thoughts: I always make sure my drives have sufficient cooling to stay below 40 C since that helps to improve longevity, but that doesn't seem like enough for this drive.

I don't enable spin down on drives since thermal cycling is generally bad for reliability so the drive only has 38 spindle start/stop cycles and 36 power cycles over the 1.2 years of on time.

SMART is reporting 3 bad sectors and a normalized read error rate of 1, so this thing is about to die.

Pros: Can't think of any, now that it's failed and all my data is lost.

Cons: Poor quality control to fail so early and with so little use

Pros: They were cheap for the amount of storage at the time.
RMA Process was fast

Cons: Ordered 1 of these drives back in June of 2011. It failed after 8 months of use. RMA'd it without any problems, and got a new drive. This new drive just failed after about a year.

Other Thoughts: I don't think I will be buying anymore WD Green drives. I use the Red and Black series and they work fine. But these Green drives are just too unreliable.

Pros: HUGE storage space, fantastic price and not even a single problem.

Cons: Not the fastest HDD

Other Thoughts: running over 2 years as a secondary drive without a hiccup. highly recommended for anyone looking for big storage without taking up multiple drive bays.

Pros: Works reliably, low power consumption and quiet. 2TB is a good size/price point (2012-13). For automated backups they're plenty fast enough.

Cons: Not a speed demon (canna change the laws o physics capt'n!). While not as fast as other drives, these aren't abysmally slow or anything, just not uber-fast.

Other Thoughts: Does what it's designed to do, used 2 of these for independent backups (not mirrored) for over a year with zero issues in a Mac Pro, one on Time Machine, the other a CCC bootable backup of the primary HD (which was a Caviar Black).

Pros: Low price per GB, quiet.

Cons: Didn't last too long.

Pros: Good energy consumption, pretty quiet, fast enough for a NAS, good price for the size.

Cons: HW failure rate seems higher than average

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 of these drive two years ago for a NAS (RAID5). I have had to replace two so far because of hardware failures (one on year 1, one on year 2). Both failures were predictable, bad sector errors for a few months, self repaired, then finally one reboot too many and the drive permanently fails. I feel like I'm on borrowed time with the third HDD that hasn't failed, but at least I haven't had any data lost yet.

I only took off one point because Western Digital really makes the RMA/Return pretty fast and easy (if you have a credit card they will send you the new drive first), and the drives have performed very well in all other respects.
